Diamond Tiara: Why the Hatred?

Fractured

Recommended Posts

I haven't seen the simpsons much, so idk about that character.

But with Angelica, she's been shown to care about and protect the babies.  And she's only 3 years old.  Her parents ignore her, and she has pretty much no idea how to act around her peers to make friends.

Binkie, if I remember correctly, ended up being friends with Arthur.  And he mostly acted tough because he was trying to look cool in front of his group of friends, who were also pretty mean people.  That could be caused by peer pressure.  And he's very insecure, and acts tough sometimes because he's embarrassed about things.

Diamond Tiara has friends.  She is old enough to know to be nice.  She bullies people for being different.  She's even turned Babs against her own family.  She has not once shown any type of good in her.

In any given fanfiction where Diamond Tiara is being punished, however, you'll have anywhere from a couple to a couple dozen people saying they plain don't feel sorry for her in the comments section, or celebrating her punishment and misery. Are these people in the same boat as the writer, then?

I assume so, but it's only really an assumption; I could be completely wrong.

Maybe the authors of some of those fanfics just enjoy exploring the character, and may not necessarily feel a serious sense of vengeance toward a fictional character whom they associate with real people outside of the story.

I was teased by girls at School, but they didn't necessarily fit the exact character traits as DT, so I feel pretty averagely about her: I can recognize that she has something of a superiority issue and is quite a bully, but you won't catch me pouring any real emotion into any fanfic, or comment to a fanfic about her.

Maybe the feelings some people have toward DT is less about her as such, but about the CMCs being picked on. So as much as I could guess it's because such people may have been bullied or teased by someone like DT, they might have seen vulnerable people, maybe children, being set upon by someone like DT.

Feel like I'm rambling about this now! But yeah. Personally I love DT and SS; I find them pretty fun to watch, DT especially. :)

Nelson is completely different from Diamond Tiara: unlike her he bullies in a funny way (with his "Ha ha!"), he doesn't hate his victims, plus he's poor.

I think DT bullies the CMC because she doesn't like them, or there's another reason but we don't know it (yet?). If they give her more character development, the fandom would start to like her imo.

Simply being that we LOVE to hate that kind of character. She's really perfectly fit into her role. Being a jerk to everypony around. Only one problem, similar to one I find Sweetie Belle and kind of Rainbow Dash to have: lack of character. One trait is what defines her. I might hate her, (no LITERALLY. HATE), I gave her a more positive light, and she really is a character that happens to be part of the reason I watch the show. She gives the show a more relatable feel.

(By her I mean them, though :P)

Because she is always picking the CMC and all the other ponies in the same school.

I don't really hate her, I just don't feel anything for her. At times, she can get on my nerves when she is being rude to the poor cutie crusaders but I don't hate, nor like her for that matter...

I think the show should include her more though. I'd like to see her appear more so I may feel something for her character.

She's a bully.

She bullies the crusaders for not having cutie marks yet.

But what's her talent? Wearing a tiara? Pretending to be a snobby little princess? I think she feels bad about herself and she bullies the crusaders to make herself feel better.

She's just mean.

Well, everyone loves Angelica because her antagonist approach to her siblings is more of cute if you ask me. Diamond Tiara came of as racist when she made fun of Scootaloo for her inability to fly. Her insults stay the same so even if it was funny the first time (and it wasn't) it probably isn't going to be funny if you use the same 'blank-flank' approach excessively.

  • 1 year later...

As a huge fan of Scootaloo ... what you say makes a lot of sense. When she targeted Scootaloo for her limitations, I had one of my few verbal outbursts when watching the show. Its not very PG-13 so use your imagination. Of course post episode I realized that the writers used the character perfectly, and unlike others I really thought that a lack of punishment for Diamond Tiara was realistic.

I personally hope that she is given a sympathetic story later. If I was a writer on the show I would do the following

1. Make her actually be the catalyst for one of the CMC getting a cutie mark

2. Have her cross a line with Silver Spoon leaving her friendless and hit rock bottom

3. Redeem her through the CMC character that she first antagonized (Applebloom)

Angelica was my favorite of the Rugrats ... if they move the needle with Diamond Tiara toward Angelica level depth I would be the first one to fist pump.

:wau:

Other than just focusing on Apple Bloom, I came close there over a year ago. :P

Oh and I promised this

As seems to be the consensus: She is hated because, from her 1st appearance (Call of the Cutie (S1E12)) she has been an arrogant, mean spirited total bitch with no redeeming virtues at all.  Other than that, no real reason.

Still, now that it has been shown that she is a "poor little rich girl" whose parents give her everything but love + she did something decent for once, I confidently predict she will gain in popularity.

Well...the hatred for me was due to the fact that she really didn't care about anyone. She was just stuck up, all about herself and really just belittled other ponies, which is why Babs got pulled in in S3 E4. DT was insecure all these years, and who knew that it was her mother who was doing this to her. She was literally torturing and conditioning her own daughter, because it was all about what she wanted. Parents simply cannot do that. And now I hate Diamond Tiara's mom more than I hate Diamond Tiara.

Bit of a necro, isn't it? Although I guess the recent episode somewhat justifies it.

Sure is. Been waiting a bit to post that as a matter of fact. Good thing we have a specific FAQ on this subject encouraging it when something new can be said.

I actually agree with C.Thunder Dash ... DT was just replaced with Spoiled Rich and most hated Poniville resident.

They definitely managed a rather smooth redemption, considering how hated she's been for the last almost-100 episodes since she was introduced in Call of the Cutie for being a spoiled, arrogant, bitchy bully.

To be perfectly honest, I am still amazed that they pulled it off. I mean, I actually enjoyed hating the character, and really thought any attempt to show another side would be halfhearted. Instead I'm actually looking forward to seeing her interact with the other characters. I still want to see some occasional snark, or at the least a sense that she thinks her way is the best way. I think that the only challenge with DT going forward is making her new side not feel like a carbon copy of the too sweet type of characters, especially when the CMC themselves have been shown to be sarcastic from time to time.

I heard someone say that a good idea would be to somehow pair her with Rarity and Sweetie Belle in an episode since Rarity has at times struggled with her own element, and it would be a great mentor moment for a budding philanthropist like DT.

The hatred probably stems from the fact that not only did Diamond Tiara bully others, she did so gleefully, and without any structured purpose. Prior to the latest episode, you could have come up with a whole sackful of lists of reasons as to why she did what she did to the CMC and others, and that guess would've been just as correct as any other person's headcanon. The narrative kept it unclear to where there was no definable support for it; you practically had to hate her, or dive into the aforementioned headcanon for a "fitting" solution.

Now, we finally have a proper understanding as to why she does what she does. While I personally would have much rather prefer they didn't use the scapegoat of a poor home life to excuse her actions, it's understandable. More than that, however, it's relatable for quite a few people, which is something that a lot of people struggled to find in Diamond Tiara before.

Now we have both the ability to relate to her, and the understanding of who she really is, people will be less likely to see her as an allegory for bullying, and more as a true, three-dimensional character. If there's still hatred out there for her, I suspect we'll be seeing a lot less of it.

Whoever brought this up

Well assuming this question was asked before we saw the latest episode, I would say I still liked her character. She's ruthless in her tactics and manipulative. She cannot take losing and will use and abuse whatever means necessary to achieve it. In the long run it doesn't pay off because in this show the "bad" character never wins which is consistent with the morals of the story but in real life it works. Even though she is young and shows her bouts of immaturity now and again, she displays levels of thinking ahead of her age.

Now I like her character even more because there's another dimension to it and I like her personality to. She's using her talents for good and she's helping others. Having an amazing singing voice helps too.

Diamond Tiara is quite possibly the most hated character in MLP. Twist is forgotten, Snips and snails are obnoxious, and Suri Polomare is ignored, but bronies seem to hate Diamond Tiara with a fury. My question is: why?

Now if you've seen any of the threads that i've created, you I don't go the usual route to things. I could compare her to other villains in the show, Discord, Sombra, etc, but that's been done. Instead, i'd rather compare how people feel about her as compared to other characters and see how opinions differ.

As compared to Angelica Pickles, from Rugrats: Her attitude is much the same as Diamond Tiaras, her actions mostly the same. On the whole, however, instead of being shunned, people seem to love Angelica's character.

As compared to Binky Barnes, from the TV show Arthur: He's yet another bully who happened to harass Arthur many a time. However, he seems to strike a more sympathetic case with people, rather than outright hatred.

As compared to Nelson, from the simpsons: If you like The Simpsons, you'll probably find Nelson funny. His actions end up being hillarious instead of antagonistic.

These characters all fit the bully stereotype, but the attitudes towards them are much different from the ones exhibited towards Diamond. No one would celebrate were a murder/rape fic to be created about any of the above character's, but when DT is concerned, it's perfectly acceptable, even celebrated. Why is that? I'd like to discuss it below. Also realize that this is a place for rational conversation; if you're argument extends to "because she's a bitch, and I hate her", it's best to find another thread.

She was intended to be disliked, but many people took it to the extreme. Hell, even good fics that I liked, I shunned the parts of giving DT either an unjustified Ron the Death Eater treatment, or giving her misfortunes just because the author hates her (That also happens very often with Flashy). Hell, more often than not, Silver Spoon gets scot free of it  >_> . Well, at least it will be toned down since the last episode
