You have to behave and be nice to people and Feld0 must want you to be a mod.

Powers vary, Moderators can move, edit, delete topics and have the same rights in the chat room. As well as the ability to give warn points or take them away.

Super Moderators like Zoop and Swoop have miniature admin powers, like they can edit your profile and merge accounts. If there are any more we will have to find out.

To be a mod you have to consecutively be online and have nice manners in general. You need to know when something is acceptable and when it is unacceptable. You have genuine knowledge about things on the site. You should know the different parts of the forums, such as: MLP Forums, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Octavia's hall, Roleplay World, and Beyond Equestria. You also need to be able to make hard decisions and know when a topic is in the wrong place. For example this is in the wrong section and should be in Canterlot Castle under Site Questions and Feedback. You must also type with correct grammar and punctuation so that people you are instructing can understand it altogether. Hope I have helped you.

Your friend,

Dragonshy

(None of this knowledge has been given to me from Peter (Feld0).)

Moderators are appointed as they are required. Typically only people who show no interest at all in the position are given the position. Extremely high pain thresholds are required.

I also hear you should be a hermit in a cave, but that might be a rumour?

This is actually true. If you're a hermit in a cave your chances of becoming a moderator increase by at least 15%. But, honestly, there is no 'way' to become a moderator on the forums. If a moderator is needed, then Feld0 will choose the person he feels is best for the job. Obviously you would have to be nice to become a mod, but you should be nice anyway. :P

I'd like to point out though, everypony can contribute to a better forum by simply reporting anything they feel is wrong, or bad, even if it is just a misplaced topic.

lol Actually I got a post deleted for telling somepony that their thread should be in a different section. I thought I was being helpful :/

You use the Report button on a post to send it directly to the attention of the moderators anonymously. Otherwise it breaks the rule of backseat moderating if that's all that your post was about. We do appreciate you being helpful, but we try to keep threads as on-topic as possible, and a post that isn't about the topic itself at all, even if meant well, isn't exactly on-topic, you know?

Remember, everypony. The Report button is the key to helping the staff have an easier time and your fellow members have more fun in a better forum environment! If something's wrong, report it like Tich said!

While it may seem helpful, it is not something which often contributes to a topic. Imagine if someone posts in the wrong section and three people post that, then three people just did not contribute to the topic at all. It creates a mess and might even bury actual replies under these because of an honest mistake.

I speak from experience being a former moderator on a forum, it's nice to try and help, but help the moderators locate these topics so they can be moved. if everypony pointed it out only to the original poster, it woudn't get resolved.

I understand. This was when I was new to forums, it actually wasn't even on these forums. I ended up being a mod on there after a year or so, but now I understand everything ;) Thanks!

EDIT: Yes, it was deleted for backseat modding too :)

It's an easy trap, and I feel the urge to post every time too, but then I realize that isn't helpful at all. Might be the reason I make nearly 2 reports on average every day.

It depends on the moderator group and the person(s) in charge of the forum. In my experience, admins are uneasy with members who trumpet themselves as a potential moderator or, even worse, a backseat moderator (i.e., doing the job of the moderators without the official authority and powers). The prime candidates for moderator are generally even-tempered members who are consistently online, active in discussions, and are thoughtful. Of course, it goes without saying that they be respectful and averse to troublemaking. The mod team generally talks about the candidates, their strengths and weaknesses, and then they either vote on the matter or the admin takes into consideration their opinions when making the final decision. The basic idea is that you search for those with the best potential rather than necessarily those members who already behave like moderators. It's a lot like the old saying (which I am probably about to mangle): if you go into the papal conclave a pope, you'll come out a cardinal. In other words, if you're out to become a mod, you'll likely be disappointed. Being humble and active will get you a long way. That is, at least, my experience on the matter. It most certainly depends on the needs of the forum staff. So that's pretty much the juicy inside scoop. I haven't any idea how Feld0 arranges moderator discussions, but I'm rather sure my description is a safe assumption.

I got my moderator job on another forum because I was a generally well-liked member of the community and was seen as a rule-abiding level-headed human being by the administrators. Yet I also had criticisms for the way things were being run and I wanted to be a part in fixing it because I knew I was capable. But I didn't wear that part on my sleeve. I was someone who wanted to be a moderator, but never asked let alone begged for the position.

The general rule of thumb is that if you want to be a moderator, you don't get to be one, because if you want to be a moderator, you want to be one because you get super-cool-mod powers. I think that's true for the most part, but at the same time if you really, really don't want to be a moderator, the administrators aren't going to force you to be one. It's not so much that if you want the powers you don't get to be a mod, but rather if you don't have a heart in helping the forum community, then you don't get to be a mod. That's my experience and take on things.

On an old forum I used to go to, they voted moderators into the job by vote of the community. The result was that these new moderators did about as much moderating as how much of Shakespeare can be written by a tea leaf. Somehow at no point should moderators be voted in, they should be willing to do the job if they get the opportunity, but everypony should realize that if they aren't going to contribute by actually moderating, it's generally a bad idea to be a moderator.

...yes... everyone can help, as someone mentioned a little up, just report things you don't like, the mods/super mods, will look at it and see if they can fix/leave or anyhting....

And i hope everyone just wants the forums to be amazing, as they already are..

Great

They have to manually power my TARDIS during travel in order to be considered for moderator status.

I'm planning out a trip to the edge of the universe and back to the beginning of the universe for this next batch of candidates. Going to be some fun times with The Doctor I'll tell you what.

Power you say, so they are made of rift energy converted into Artron energy in order to use the Eye of Harmony to travel through the Time Vortex?

Moderators are only chosen when the need for them is presented. If you are a well behaved person, mature when need be, and normally report posts when there's something wrong with them then i guess that could earn you points. But really these are things you should do any ways just for the sake of helping the mods do their job even better. Besides, a moderator probably wouldn't be picked unless one of them became inactive or wasn't doing their job well. Or one got promoted or simply left.

Either way becoming a moderator isn't something you should try to do or hope for, after all there are only a few for a reason. If every person that asked got moderator, it wouldn't be very controlled. Chaos and power abuse would be frequent and the forums wouldn't be safe any more.

So IMO its probably for the best that the forums remain with the current moderators for a while unless they need some one really bad. And if they do, i trust they will pick whoever they feel most suited to the job.

You can almost be a moderator just by reporting though, so just simply pointing things out, helping around and calling out posts that break the rules alone can make you a moderator in your own mind. That's how i keep going when I'm feeling like not reporting something. Every little bit helps. Just don't get report happy. Make sure you know what's breaking the rules, what slides and when topics have a double. This is what the search functions and rule page is for, to make sure people are controlled and know when to report.
