What state do you live in? I know I missed Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Maine, and Arkansas, but I can't think of what else I missed at the top of my head. Anything else?

Oklahoma :D

Yes.  California is a state.  It is #1 in population and #3 in land area.

I can name them all in alphabetical order because of a song I learned when I was in the 4th grade. I used to know all the capitals off the top of my head too but it's been too long since I've recited it.

In fact, I was able to find it! :D When I am met with this challenge, I usually kinda sing this song starting at about 45 seconds in.

I used to also study maps and watch the weather all the time when I was younger. I really wanted to pursue a career in meteorology when I was a kid. Meteorology was my backup plan when I was in college in case the pharmaceuticals, computer engineering, automotive engineering, or accounting thing didn't work out lol

Well I live in North Carolina, in a town where things seem boring. When I went to Elementary School, they were making sure that we learned the names of all of the states. Heck, they even taught us a song that helps us remember the names.

That song is still stuck in my head after all of those years.....which is about 5-6 years right now. It gets annoying, but it does help us remember.

This is a fun topic and I'm surprised at how knowledgeable some of our non-American members are about US states.  I can easily name all US states and Canadian provinces.  But for counties beyond those two...I get stumped pretty quick.  :P

One thing I've often wondered...why does Japan call their political subdivisions "prefectures" instead of states or provinces?  :derp:

This is a fun topic and I'm surprised at how knowledgeable some of our non-American members are about US states.  I can easily name all US states and Canadian provinces.  But for counties beyond those two...I get stumped pretty quick.  :P

One thing I've often wondered...why does Japan call their political subdivisions "prefectures" instead of states or provinces?  :derp:

...what about the Canadian territories?

First, let's evaluate the difference between states and provinces.  Provinces have always meant what they mean now.  States used to be synonymous with nations and countries.  It was actually thanks to the US that this changed, and it was intended to be a message to all of the colonies about the importance of unity and a message to England that we are strong enough together to earn our freedom.

Now, as for prefectures vs. provinces... I found something that I'll just copy and paste here.  It was found here: http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=95662

"I lived in Japan and speak no-longer-fluent Japanese; anyone who lives there can name much more bizarre translations than these. The Japanese word - acutally words - is a mess called "to-do-fu-ken," which is even more unwieldy than it sounds. (Tokyo is the only "to," better translated as "metropolis" since it combines city and prefectural government, Hokkaido is a "do," which sort of corresponds to "circuit" and reflects its 19th-century frontier status, Osaka and Kyoto are "fu," which is sort of like a "to" only I think some local divisions have more autonomy, and the rest are "ken," honest-to-god-I'm-not-making-this-up tongue.gif. One of my Japanese coworkers at the prefectural board of education told me that modern "ken" have somewhat more independence than a French départment but less than a U.S. state.)

"IIRC When Japan went through an intense political modernization in the 1870s, it based its local administrative system on that of France. For whatever reason the government (probably the notoriously pedantic Ministry of Education) chose the word "prefecture" rather than "department." WAG: it was to avoid confusion with "department" in the sense we in America use it, for Cabinet ministries.

"Similarly, for many years Japan translated its national assembly (kokkai) as the Diet, which just seemed bizarre. It made sense when I learned that the early constitution under which the kokkai first appeared was based on Germany - where Diet of Worms is not only for Tweety. Lately the media seem to be using Parliament, a much more accurate reflection of Japan's postwar government system."

  • 1 month later...

I opened up a blank map and tried to name as many states as I could without cheating. I missed 4 states, lol

I used this map,

Alaska, Illinois, south Carolina, north Carolina, Florida, California, Ohio, Texas, Colorado, Oregon, new York, Pennsylvania.

12... Considering I'm a Canadian, that's not bad. It was hard enough to memorize our few provinces, territories and capitals let alone your 51 states

I'm fairly certain I can name and place all of them, sometimes I might forget a few in the midwest confused just because they affect my life so little (and all look alike), but if you give me enough time I can sort them out.
