Reminder: global rules, roleplaying, and sexual interaction

SCS

Recommended Posts

I am no longer using the messaging system here, due to the lack of privacy. It's very weird and creepy that mods can do this. Snoop around in a user's messages. I am starting to lose faith in this forum and may soon find, hopefully a better one where they respect the users' privacy a whole lot more than here.

As has been said before, the staff does not snoop around personal messages or monitor them in any way, and only administrators, not moderators, can view people's messages.

The only time messages are viewed is if a message is reported by one of the two people in the conversation, or if there is clear evidence that some sort of rule violation or dangerous behavior is going on in the conversation.  For example, if someone posts a status talking about the NSFW roleplay they are in on PM's, an admin would look into it after discussion with the staff about it.

If there's no evidence that you're doing something wrong in PM's and it hasn't been reported by one of the people in the conversation, then your PM's will not be looked at.

That being said it is ultimately your choice whether you want to use the PM system or not.  It's fine if you don't want to use this feature of the forum, but it's there for users who do want to use it.  You can even disable your messenger if you like.  But anybody who chooses to use the messaging system will be expected to follow this site's rules.

What makes it worse is that there is no NSFW content allowed in the messenger, which is ludicrous in my opinion,

That rule was here since always, so I'd not act like it was something new :P

Also like I said already - there are hundreds of pages where You can share as much NSFW as You want. Why doing drama about one page that does not allow it and does not allow it because kids are here as well?

Truly I do believe this forum and the staff provide more privacy than, say, facebook..

If anyone decides not to use the PM system because of this... Well, you better get off the internet. Nothing is completly private online, and never has been.

The fact that this had to be brought to public attention is a little disturbing, but I can fully understand the reasons. I'll be honest in saying I was fully unaware of said system that allowed the reading of said messages by the staff.

Honestly, I have no problems with this. The reasons and all have been discussed en masse, and the implications for the board owner & such are too high for them NOT to do this.

I have full and complete trust in the staff here, and I feel that whatever they do is in the best interests of safety and the law. I fully support their endeavor.

I only trust/like SCS. and "That rule was here since always, so I'd not act like it was something new tongue.png"

I know it was, but I did not know it extended all the way to the messaging system as well. Admins need to inform people of this stuff a little bit better. I have now lost all faith in this forum.

I see no reason why one should lose faith in the forums. Really, it's written clearly in the rules. It shouldn't have to be pointed out like that. Really, it's my fault totally that I missed it.

While the staff here can make mistakes, I don't see any to indicate why one should lose faith in the system here.

I thought it applied only to public posts.

So You were wrong. Just like every person sometimes is.

Like I said - there are pages where NSFW content is allowed. Why doing drama about no possibility to talk about it here then? Nobody from staff will blame You for talking about NSFW stuff outside mlpforums.

Also You skipped the part, where SCS said that so far only... 4-5 people had their messengers checked at least while SCS was administrator. Those are very little numbers when compared to number of users on forums or even number of users who were banned/got warning points, don't You think?

Wha I'mn saing is, he fact that admins can do that is still creepy, no matter what.

Well, I don't want to cause a ruckus or anything, but I don't really see or understand why it has to be seen as creepy. I understand privacy issues and all, but considering everything, I just don't understand the fear behind it; especially when the staff have been very upfront with us about this.

To each their own though.

I just had a thought.

There would seem to be an offline analogy to how this is dealt with.

If you do something in the privacy of your own home, nobody knows (unless you tell them or they are involved, of course).

If you do something illegal, you wont get punished... unless the authorities find out, which they only tend to do when something brings it to their attention.

The authorities of most countries don't tend to snoop inside peoples houses, but they will usually investigate if something makes it seem there is a problem.

Just like here, really.

It's more comparable to if you were renting a hotel room, and the staff found you doing something illegal like shooting up drugs in there and booted your ass out on the street, since no area of this site is your "private property"

It has been officially mentioned. The name "Global Rules" itself means that the rules apply everywhere on the site. We also have a specific clause in there regarding messages:

It will be 2 years since I have been here in a couple of weeks and I still don't remember that, it must have been added recently. I can understanding saving face, covering your ass and following the law I don't blame you guys for any of that but if there is one thing that I can't stand is being lied to and talked down to like I am god damn child. I have now lost all respect and trust I had for you and the faith I had in this staff. I am not afraid you guys will snoop in everyones PM's because even if you wanted to it is impossible with all of the hundreds sent everyday which is something that has been admitted but again I don't like being lied to and the whole "tough shit" argument you gave in response only pissed me off even more. I guess I am done here and possibly done with this site completely, but I suppose I will give that other matter a few weeks or so.

Like others have said, it's kinda disturbing that this is even a thing that needs to be brought up. I'm glad to see that the necessary action can and will be taken when found and needed. I also though see what others are concerned about, though it doesn't bother me since I don't rp anyways.

I do however, say this to those who are pounding their faces against the wall in anger and frustration about their now "lack" of privacy. Newsflash, you lost your privacy the instant you plugged in your internet cable and connected to your wifi network. From the minute you started up your internet browser, all your "fairness" and "privacy" vanished. Like any other forum or website, if the need arises and the attention is brought to the higher ups, you can easily be checked and noted. You're safe in very few websites these days. Basically if you want your privacy, unplug you internet cable cause that's about the best your most likely gonna get.

Now i'm not married with kids or sensitive in the privacy department, but I can understand how much weight this could/would take off of a parents shoulders and even the staffs shoulders. This is just what i've seen and noted in my like 20 years of doin' nothin' but browsin' the internet all day every day  . Just my 2 cents.

Wait a second ... So it has gotten to the point where the whole community has to be remembered of the global aspect of the rules because this one thing has become an issue happening far more than just a few times recently? Right? Phew. I ... I, um ... And I always expected something about ... I don't know, bullying in PMs being posted; nothing like this. Nothing related specifically to NSFW talk and stuff in PMs. Or should I say messages? Ms? Nah, okay, that came off as sarcastic, I suppose. I mean ... could start to discuss more and more about that, the nature of privacy and individualism in general and all that stuff - it's not like I wouldn't like to do something like that - but ... yeah, I guess there's nothing more to add than what already has been said, especially this:

Quite easy. You "rent" an "appartment" and by acting against the "house rules", and/or the law, you're the one to bear the blame when you're "kicked out". Nothing to add.

The staff said they don't use that power unless they have reason to believe someone is doing something illegal or against the rules via PM, and I'd say suspicion of soliciting minors is a really damn good reason to investigate.

Just popping in to say that if you really want total privacy, there is always Skype.. (unless you're involved in the C.P. trading network), you can send all the NSFW you want there. If you're on a site you're not even paying for I'd find it in your best interests to at least try to comply with the rules. It would only be ridiculous if they were changed on a whim such as 1 particular forum I was in where they randomly changed the off topic rules so you can't post there one day and can the next, which ended up making people leave. I don't see this as the case here as it's pretty clearly stated in RP that you can't do that. Regardless of where it's done is what I'd presumed. Nevertheless, I imagine if you are sending NSFW to someone who is okay with it, then nothing would actually happen to you anyways as they've said they don't read the pms unless warranted. It's the same thing in real life, police aren't going to come into your home looking for marijuana unless they smell/see the marijuana and get the court order.

Regarding bullying in PMs, you should know that you'd be caught with that anyways. Even without a report button in PM, there's something called "screenshot" that you should become familiar with. Takes me literally half a second to screenshot AND upload my entire screen to puush. So you really can't get away with it that easy.

So yeah, there's that I guess. I didn't think it would need to be said, and the rules are pretty lenient here, I just thought what you can't do is kind of ..implied..?

I think it's time for a wake up call...

  • Everything you do on the internet is recorded. It doesn't matter what you're using, the data has to go somewhere, and it can be linked back to you. Your ISP holds a record of your history.
  • Police can contact your ISP for your internet history. If you are involved in a criminal investigation, your web history can be used as evidence against you in a trial.
  • In short: Everything you do on the internet can have real-world consequences. You think you're anonymous, and that it won't matter, but what you do can affect your life in whole lotta ways, and send it straight down the pooper.

The point I was trying to make was that what you do is on record, and those records can be seized. I never mentioned anything about being actively watched.

We're talking about saucy RPs and sh*t here, right?

What "records" can they possibly take from that? How many times you initiated a kissu kissu?

I'm all in favor for keeping tabs on heinous harassment offences going on in PMs.

But for one to receive the same punishment in the "privacy" of one pm that no one but the involved would see between (again) consenting of-age parties as the same as posting NSFW content here, out in pubic...That's absurd.
