Hey, everyone! What are your thoughts on FIMFiction? For those who aren't aware, it's a site where people can share MLP-related fanfics!

I've been on the site a few times. It's hard for me to get into MLP fanfics because I have a very particular vision of the show that I don't think a lot of fanfic writers can write about (that's a personal preference for me, though). I have navigated the website though and have found some amusing fanfics. I'd say that it's one of the better fanfic sites out there that I'm aware of, based on the fact that it isn't a hellhole. :)

Well, that escalated quickly. Because I'm not a fan of keeping order at the expense of genuine discussion, let's reboot this thread. This time, we'll use a more neutral topic.

 

Don't argue about or otherwise discuss clop; that's against the rules. Anyone who attempts to reignite the flames will be summarily banned from the thread, and will face additional penalties.

Because it was overtly-critical, I am assuming, to the point where your criticism was venomous instead of constructive. I am not a moderator, but that is my best guess. If you want to discuss it in length then I'd recommend that you PM Twilight Sparkle above.

 

This forum is not anti-critique, but you have to be careful not to be rude in what you say about people. There are ways to be critical without being mean.

Im One of the magical users on FIMFICTION who usually Stands around reading all kinds of Fic, yes yes even the "Weird" Ones. I haven't Posted anything on it And i probably will never, To Be honest though last few months i haven't been extremely active on the site.

Although  I do give a hearty Thumbs up and Recommend to "Man Of War" By "TallestBrony", It is a story i have followed since it began, and at the moment it is one of the largest Fictions of the site!

On the topic itself, Fimfiction is a very nice site! It got the best search function ever and the tracking/faving/real-it-later-ing system is frankly perfect. I find it's very easy to manage my ever-growing libraries of read/unread stories, and the recent updates only made it even better.

The only downside I can think of is that the voting system often breaks down spectacularly :derp:

 

And yeah, it has porn, but there is already a setting in place to protect minors from running across lewd fics.

I don't read that much MLP fic, but I've read some good ones on FIMfiction! In terms of layout, tagging etc, I'd say it's pretty well organised and the groups are a good idea and seem to work well :)

 

However...not saying this is the fault of the site itself, but I've also noticed a tendency for reviews/comments to be VERY negative and harsh, way more than necessary IMO. Constructive criticism is awesome, but it seems to be very little of that and more "why would you even write this *thing I don't like* you must be a terrible awful person". When I tried to participate in the forums there, I had a similar experience - maybe I was just unlucky, but a lot of people didn't seem interested in discussion of any opinions other than their own, and people seem to take it extremely personally if you disagree with them. It's frustrating for me because I love discussing characters and interpretation of canon events, but I remember one instance when I attempted to join in a discussion by quoting someone else's post, but all I got in reply was "alright you don't have to flame me!!", and I'm pretty sure I didn't say anything that could be taken as a personal attack and I always try to be as polite as possible even when disagreeing with people, so that felt really bad that I'd apparently upset someone, and it put me off posting there for a while :(

 

I also REALLY dislike the "dislike" button, though I admit it's probably just me being oversensitive about it, but...it feels really discouraging for writers. If someone gets a load of "dislikes" but no constructive criticism at all, it's probably not going to motivate them to try to improve - it's like a bunch of people just yelling "you suck" at them. If someone doesn't like my fic, that's fine, and nopony's obligated to leave comments, positive or negative - but as a writer I would much rather not know about it if they're not going to offer any constructive criticism, because I'm just going to wonder "what's wrong with it, is it my writing, the plot, the characterization??", not know what it is that I need to work on and potentially be put off writing more if I suck and don't know why. Maybe others feel differently, but I just think it's unnecessary to spread that much negativity. To me, if you care enough to let the writer know you disliked something, it's at least polite to explain why and how you think they might improve. So that does kinda put me off using the site too much :/ (that said, I'll still post there just because my ponyfic gets way more feedback than it does on other fanfic sites :P)

I'm not a fanfic person, but I do find FiMFiction to be a neat little website. It's a website I tend to visit when I either want to read something lighthearted or when I'm bored.

I just read a 3 hour long fimfic called pinkies suicide phycosis, I DEFIDENTALLY RECOMMEND IT TO EVERYONE HERE (u might cry like a lot) it was a amazing story!!

go read musing of a fallen princess while listening to moonlight sonata on the final chapter...

I am registered on there, it's a nice place.

 

The IRC channel is a little strange though, sometimes it will throw you in a random channel that other sites are hosted on. If it does, and if you talk about anything Pony related, they will immediately light you on fire til you leave. Happened to me a few times when I came in there to ask some questions...
