In light of recent DDoS attacks...

As most of you have either probably seen or at least heard of, there is a hacker group calling themselves KekSec International causing DDoS attacks on many different brony related sites, claiming to be getting rid of degeneracy, as stated on their twitter.

 

They have attacked, over a course of three days:

Fimfiction

Ponycountdown

Roundstable

And others...

 

The sites that have been able to stop and withstand the DDoS attacks on their servers have installed something called cloudfare to help protect them from further attacks.

 

What I suggest now is to find something, be it cloudfare or another way of protection, to prevent any DDoS attacks that may happen. I really would hate to lose this place, even if it were only for a day or so, like Fimfiction.

 

I don't know if this or something like it is in place, but if not, I hope it will be soon, for the forums protection.

To answer the concern raised, MLP Forums already uses Cloudflare.

ah, ok. I was just a little worried. I enjoy these fotums on a daily basis, and would have been down if the site was down.

Yes, the forums currently have DDoS mitigation on a scale more than enough to withstand such attacks. If different attack vectors come up, we'll deal with that when we can. Point is a little downtime won't hurt anybody too much on the off chance it occurs

Yea we and other pony websites are using cloud-fire DDoS protection so we will be about 50% fine

That is rather disturbing news, You have brought. IMO mlpforums should take certain steps in case we too will become a target.

Problem with us wanting to hit them back, is Bronies aren't that popular in the mainstream culture. Being a brony is something thats looked down upon. So a lot of groups won't back us.

I'm quoting this for the benefit of those that that may not know. nurd is our newest member of the Tech Team here and serves as our System Operator and is speaking from a position of awareness and knowledge. Suffice to say we feel prepared, however should we get hit ... we have the resources to recover. MLP Forums and Poniverse are not going anywhere even in the event of a DDoS.

They're DDoSing for the reaction. A 'counter hack' (However you'd do it) would honestly be the best reaction of all for them (Aside from the insults. Which are generally pretty funny to read).  

At that point you'd honestly just be asking for people to DDoS you xD
