S05:E09 - Slice of Life

Don't get me wrong though--I love the idea of an episode that focuses on background characters--but I would have liked it more if they had come up with these characters themselves instead of just copy-pasting the fandom into an episode. It felt...insincere?

 

I don't expect "incredibly deep lore", I just expect consistency. ^^'

But they DIDN'T just copy and paste them! We came up with logical extensions and so did they and most of them were different.

 

-The Doctor was NOT a time traveler, to his dismay.

 

-Derpy goofs but isn't catastrophically clumsy.

 

-Secret agent Bon Bon wasn't in ANY fanon as far as I know. (If anything that was Octavia and Pony Joe's thing.)

 

-Speaking of whom, Octavia lives in Ponyville not Canterlot.

 

-Most notably VINYL NEVER SPEAKS! She's often a chatter box in fanon.

 

So . . . no they weren't being insincere.

As much as I appreciate the cameos and shout-outs, I think they could have done a lot better with this episode. Especially the pacing.

I might have cared about Doctor Hooves and the others if they each had enough screen time to really develop as characters... If you don't read fanfics, this episode doesn't really do anything for you.

I don't and I still think this might be my favorite episode of all time.

 

The characters felt familiar but they could surprise me. The plot moved around but that was fine, it was more a humorous string of character moments than a proper story.

I was amused that attacks on Ponyville have become so frequent that many of them don't care/aren't surprised anymore.

That's another head canon of mine basically confirmed and this vindicated!

 

Now all I have to do is convince them to make Breaburn and Little Strongheart a thing. <3

*shrugs* Just my opinion. I don't read fanfics, I didn't enjoy the episode. ^^' I assume it's cause-and-effect, seeing as everyone else already loves these characters. When i watched this episode, I didn't care about its characters, because none of them individually got enough screen time for me to really get to know them beyond their face value.

Golly, I loved this episode, even though I didn't understand most of the references.

They adopted so many fan interpretations, but added some original content, too. Like, I would of expected Lyra to be the secret agent, but it was so good because Bonbon's voice actor changes all the time! SQUEE!

And I loved the science lab! It just adds new depth to MLP! I loved the Doctor/Derpy relationship, it was amazing! It felt like there was content every few seconds being thrown at us. God, I loved this episode.

I have no idea what the bug bear came from, but it was hilarious!

I really, really liked Celestia and Luna's portrayal. Celestia wasn't ridiculously informal, like she was in Make New Friends but Keep Discord, but she was still... casual, I guess. And they bickered! SQUEE!

Plus, OctaVinyl. DEAR GOD, THE OCTAVINYL. Not that I particularly support them as a ship, but the friendship feels~ (which actually brings me to the main problem in the episode, which is that the sounds of a cello were coming out of Octavia's bass. But you know your nitpicking when that's the main problem.)

 

Yeah, honestly, it was probably one of my favorite episodes. It was really funny, added some depth, and the Gummy/Shakespeare thing was just amazing. Yeah, that's my opinion on the episode. I just wanted to gush about it. :3

That was something I noticed as well. I suppose Nowhacking and Vinyl has become so closely associated with one another that they thought it would be safer to not have her speak; this may have been for the best.

 

A Changeling (who have only appeared once, as evil creatures who eat love,) having been invited to a wedding felt VERY odd. Like, seriously odd. Last time we saw changelings, Twilight was blasting them to bits. I bit of explanation would have been nice. ^^'

The way I saw that scene was that he wasn't invited there, but instead that he was a lost Changeling who happened to wander into the wedding without having most guests notice his presence.

Yees, finally the episode happened...

 

It was fine, I think.

 

Lots of Ponies talked (Except Button Mash :C  ), which was the highlight of the episode...

 

The Doctor said that "Allons-y" thing,

 Fanfics, fan animations, and fan content in general.  I also don't watch Doctor Who, I've never seen the Big Lebowski, and I don't ship background characters. So this epsiode really didn't have nay thing in it for me, except Derpy.
