Do the ponies sometimes dye their coats?

I just randomly thought about this off-the-wall post.

Mane dying is canon in the show, but do you think ponies sometimes dye their fur coats?

I was thinking about the royal guards always being white (or sometimes dark gray/black.)

Maybe that's a requirement (like short hair in our US military)?

If not I don't think Equestria is an equal opportunity employer. Wait, never mind- I think the whole cutie mark thing kinda throws a wrench in that idea.

Anyways, I'm curious to see what you guys think of this idea.

I would love to see an episode where Rarity dyes her fur a slightly strange color and it goes on like a normal episode except you can tell the rest of the mane 6 think she looks weird but won't tell her. :P

Rainbow Rocks... at least how it could've looked... in a stranger, more interesting dimension

For those who are wondering, Twilight is chewing bubble gum.

Mayor Mare in a mane dying scandal.  Fluttershy uses tail extensions.  "I've gotta get out of here before she dies my coat a different color" (Twilight in the very first episode)...

I forgot about that in the first episode. :muffins:

I just thought that it's kind of strange that the guards are always white or dark gray/black.

I know it makes animating them easier because you know, Copy/Paste.

That's a good head canon about the coats of the guards being a requirement, I think I'll use that. But in that case, why does Flash Sentry get to keep his coat colour?

My theory is that he's either part of a secret service where coat dying would be a detriment, or he's a high enough rank that he is given some freedoms like that.

Most likely the equestrian military dyes their manes and coat to look uniform with each other due to job requirements.   That's why all the guards we see in the show look the same.

They are all the same size, and have the same structure. What if they are all clones, or members of a very inbred race.

Hmm, now that sounds familiar

In my head it was the armour being enchanted to change their coat colour (I just assumed the height thing was a given  )

But I can't see why the ponies can't dye their coats if they want, if they can do their manes - why not their coats?

Ponies don't have fur. They have hair. As to whether they ever dye it or not, that's not really addressed in the show.

What if they're all Celestia's children... I mean she is probably 1000 of years old she has plenty of time to make children. Celestia does have a white coat they also have multi colored manes/tails.

I'm pretty sure Celestia is single.

In the first episode, Twilight wanted to get out of Rarity's boutique before, in her words, "she decided to dye her coat a new colour." With that in mind, it could mean that coat dying is a thing that has been done before in Equestria, and that maybe Rarity has done this sort of thing before.

The guards always being the same color?  Most fan fics assume either make up/ hair dye or a spell built into the armor.  Why?  It's usually assumed to be like a uniform, something for when you are on duty.
