Is your favorite pony relatable to you?

I've been thinking about why so many people like Fluttershy and Luna, the two (arguably) most loved ponies.

Luna is a redemptive character. Done. Check. Moving on.

Fluttershy however, I can't really find anything engaging about her. I always tell my audience everything needed to base response, so I will say Fluttershy is my least favorite of the mane 6. I don't hate her, but she is the lowest on the like-o-meter. Twilight's a badass nerdchick, Pinkie is zany and (sometimes) funny, Rarity goes against girly stereotypes, Spike (might as well include him in something) is a guy in a female cast, Rainbow Dash is athletic and "cool". AJ is best po... I mean a great combonation with any other pony, a hard worker, and morally superior. Come at me haters.

But Fluttershy is just... shy, I mean she has great dialogue, great episodes, etc like all the rest, but she never really stood out anywhere. The Cutie Map is the first time she a memorable main role in recent history.

Then I realized many internet bronies, including myself, are quite introverted, and shy usually goes along with introversion. I must say, even though Fluttershy is my least favorite, she is probably my second most relatable out of the show (1st being Twi). Then I connected that further with the generally correct statistic that most people gravitate towards characters they can connect with. That's why people normally like Sally over Deathgaze Starkiller.

So it would make sense to me if many bronies like Fluttershy because they may see a bit of themselves in her and feel empathetic.

So is Fluttershy your favorite, because of reasons I listed? If not, is your favorite pony somepony you can relate to? Do you normally gravitate towards those characters in any entertainment?

I'm not going to deny that Fluttershy being introverted like myself doesn't play a role in me liking her but it's not the main reason she's my favorite pony.  For me the thing that I like most about Fluttershy is that she's the most understanding and empathetic of the Mane 6, that she is least prone to judging someone and is willing to help someone out.  I mean she gave Discord a chance and managed to reform him (I blame both Tirek's influence and the rest of the Mane 6 not really giving him a chance as to his slip up in Twilight's Kingdom) Also she usually isn't naive about it, that she's aware of the negative side of things yet still goes for the right choice or puts her faith in her beliefs.  Part of the reason I wasn't too big a fan of Fluttershy in The Cutie Map, she was far too naive which just made me shake my head, though it probably didn't help that it was co-written by MA Larson (Sorry but he can not write Fluttershy to save his life)

Also she reminds me of Gohan (Before the Buu Saga)

I think relating to a character can definitely play a part in you liking them, though it's not a prerequisite. Twilight is probably my favorite and I relate to her a lot but there are lots of characters I have nothing in common with who I love :3

As far as I can tell, yeah. Just like Derpy, I might not be in the best spot in life because I mess up, sometimes making fairly large mistakes. But regardless of that I still try to do what I can to help and I do my best to get by. And I'm just going by her few appearances and her show canon. Interesting point about Fluttershy. But she was my least favorite as well mainly because for some reason, she annoyed in the first season and I've never "liked" her since.

Aside from that, I don't have a favorite pony and I don't think I can relate to any in the show. Mainly because I'm apathetic, procrastinator that can't do anything without being highly motivated to do something.

Fluttershy started out as my favorite, but kinda fell to the sidelines as I found out that I don't really have all that much in common with her. Twilight is definitely my favorite because I can relate to her a lot. I used to be really into reading books, but that habit kinda fell away as I grew more interested in computers, (before, there was almost no chance you would catch me without a good book by my side), I love approaching the world in an analytical way, and I noticed that I tend to panic in stressful situations like she does, (especially concerning assignment due dates). So yes, she is my favorite because I can relate to her. I also relate to Pinkie Pie and Applejack as well, but to less of an extent. I also do tend to gravitate towards such characters in other entertainment.

I can't even begin to describe how close Rainbow Dash and I are. We're both really proud, highly competitive, think ourselves the best at everything, have a need for winning at any cost, even if it means... "bending" the rules a bit... but most importantly, all of my friends have described me as being very loyal. There's no question in my mind that Dash and I are realy relatable. I can't say that I'm as sporty as her, but I otherwise am really competitive with what I do. Interest-wise, we're kind of opposites. But personality wise, well, we are both really awesome. She's my favorite pony of all time, and for good reason to boot!

Nah, not at all. I like characters who are NOT me. I specifically like characters who are embody attributes that I find appealing and who act in a manner that I find noble or endearing.

Basically, its like this: I LIKE superman, but I don't want to BE superman, nor am I like him. Same thing, I very rarely relate to characters I like.

Yes, very. So much so that it's gotten a little bit creepy.

I relate to my favorite, Applejack, in some ways, but I'm not sure if she's the one I identify with the most. Certainly it helps to be able to connect with a character that resembles yourself in some way, and I I tend to appreciate characters that I can relate to, but they don't always become my favorites. I usually opt for characters that are a bit different than me, but have a way about them that I admire, in other words, characters that I almost wish I could be like.

In the case of Applejack, I relate to her in the sense that I value my family above anything else, and I always do my best to please them and make them proud of me. I grew up in a family comprised of two siblings, one older and one younger, and only one parental figure for much of the time (as one passed away when I was fairly young), so I understand and appreciate AJ's position in life all too well. I also identify with her valuing practical things over material possessions, and her disinterest in fashion or looking pretty. I'm also a mostly honest person who tries to be friendly and helpful to all I meet. By contrast, Applejack has a much stronger character than I do and has a work ethic that I'll probably never know, as much I wish I did.

I think I am more like Fluttershy or Twilight overall. Quiet, shy, modest, definitely a bit nerdy. I'm not very assertive but I can figure out problems in a pinch. I like my alone time and I enjoy peaceful settings as well as nature and animals.

My favorite kinds of characters generally are ones that are a good mix of strong and independent, but still warm and caring. I would say I gravitate to characters that are similar to Applejack, but I honestly don't think there are many characters that are that similar to her. I think she's incredibly unique. ^^

Nope. Not at all. Rainbow Dash is my favorite pony for sentimental reasons. Before I became a Brony, I kept seeing Rainbow Dash pop up everywhere. She seemed a lot like Sonic the Hedgehog (my childhood idol), and it tickled my curiosity. It was a few years before I caved in, but still, Rainbow Dash is the reason I ever watched the show.

It's hard to explain when you shift personality every so often. But then again, indigo children usually shift between 3rd-4th-5th dimension. Which makes it hard to have any fauvorites, stablish friendship, develop relationships, or even finish projects. You absorb everything so fast, you get tired almost instantly and need to move on.

When time comes to dispose of my friends, either it be due to our relationship not allowing any further personal growth, or hindrance due to old ideas and strict paradigms, then there's conflict and they suffer.

Human beings need each other, way more than we do. Some people will pick a character/person as a complement to their own needs and personal traits. There's persons which will select those that represent them better. Some others may chose those with desirable traits, what's missing.
It's up to the subject's development and environment. For example, those with insecurities, are more likely to search for relatable traits, rather than exploring new cultures and ways. No trust.

When finishing our relationship, my friends told me they chose me, because they aspired to become like me "I was an example" Give me a break, that's creepy. Why would they want to be like me? When I'm damaged, flawed, not half of what used to be. Reason why I pick RD.

I used to be like her when I was child, then things started going wrong. My colors went missing. Introspective, absent. Spent so much time inside my subconscious, dealing with negative memories, I barely remember anything.

I relate to a certain classical musician that is usually considered the epitome of elegance and sophistication. Of course, I personally do not have a British accent, but I do share her passion for the cello, along with social graces and a proclivity for eloquence.

Yes, very much so, but that dosen't mean we are clones of each other. I am much more introverted than Applejack for example, this is where the Twilight side of my personality which is fairly even with my AJ side comes into play. There are many different ways to relate to a character, I have more in common with Applebloom than Sweetie Belle yet find myself connecting more to Sweetie Belle than Applebloom due in large part to her struggles to have her sister who is very different from her understand her. Don't get me wrong I love Applebloom, I love the entire Apple Family, they compliment AJ and other like a good cider but Sweetie Belle has always been my favorite CMC.
