movies/tv Is Adventure Time overrated?

Seen around 10 episodes of this show and tbh this show looks not much special for the most part. Then again 10 episodes probably isn't enough because this show is so random I'm still figuring out what it's even about. I feel I'm being harsh on the show because I've gone into it with such high expectations because of all the hype it's recieved, but that's the thing, it seems overhyped. Out of all the kids cartoons around today, Adventure Time probably has the most fans maybe behind MLP, yet Adventure Time's fanbase feels alot more mainstream than the MLP fanbase or any other current kids cartoon. Gravity Falls is probably the best kids cartoon I've ever seen, yet it doesn't seem to have that many fans, Dan Vs and SVsFOE also seem like underrated cartoons.

I've just seen two episodes but from what I've seen, yes. Saw it, hated it, stopped watching. Annoying humor and ugly character design.

I tried a couple of times to start watching it... And, erm..., sorry its humor just isn't for me :P

I find the characters too be too nasty. Not nasty in a amusing way, like the Looney Tunes, just nasty in a totally unfunny way.

I can somewhat understand why people like it. The concept is so insane that I can see why people might find it funny and there are people who genuinely care working on it. But for me it's a little too strange and insane for my liking.

No matter how hard I try these ponies will simply never leave me.

I've watched it entirely up to about half of season six, and yes, it is bizarre at times, but the characters develop pretty well over the seasons, and even if the show seems really random, everything sticks together in the end. It's a much better show than SpongeBob IMO.

Just like how MLP appeals to some people and not at all to others, Adventure Time has an audience that loves it and one that doesn't get it. Overrated is a pretty ridiculous term to throw around imo, since you're essentially saying that people like something more than they should. I once really got into Adventure Time, but then I got in the MLP mindset and it became less appealing. Gonna try to watch it again with my friends.

TLDR: It's not for everyone.

It has a pretty dedicated fandom. Rarely do the episodes happen in a sequential and at the moment it doesn't look like it will have a clear beginning middle and end (Unlike Steven Universe, Gravity Falls, and Over the Garden Wall) But the characters DO change, and develop which would only be noticed during binges.

Just an example of character development:

The main character Finn, physically ages through the series. He starts off as a young hero who see's the world as black/white and himself as a hero, and believed that his heart would always lead him to the best posible outcome. This is not real life, and it's not Finns. As he's going through puberty now he see's how his action do indeed hurt people he cares about whether intentional or not. After losing his arm, his sword and his girlfriend (not at the same time) he goes through a very realistic depression and tries to self medicate by (Consentualy) kissing princesses. (As seen in the episode Breezy) You don't have to LIKE that he's acting this way, (because he doesn't like it either) but it makes him a more realistic character than his previous Paladin mind-set.

IMO, the series lost a lot of it's soul after Rebecca Sugar left the show (She did return for 8 episode special 'Stakes' though) and a lot of the fandom followed her to Steven Universe.

Everyone has different opinions on it, of course.

For me, I didn't enjoy it. I think it just reminds me too much of those younger years where you're like "lolz0r I'm so randum!!1!11" and of course I'm not really like that anymore, so it just wasn't my cup of tea.

This made me sad. Please, give it another chance. D:

I suggest you watch the recent episodes "Stakes" as it's some of Marceline's character development and it's pretty awesome all together.

I love adventure time and honestly I think there's really great humor and some good characters. The development of the characters backstories are pretty interesting as well.

I'm sorry but it was very easy for me to make up my mind, the entire show just screamed "nope nope nope" it's everything I hate. Besides, animation and character design is one of the most important things for me in a cartoon show, if I don't like it I'm not gonna waste my time watching something I know I won't like. ^^ I haven't seen that Gravity Falls either and it doesn't look too amazing but I'd much rather watch that show.

As others have said, it does eventually get better. It starts to establish more of a continuity and glimpses into how the Land of Ooo became what it is. Steven Universe is very similar in storytelling, but maybe a bit more straightforward.

It's okay, I guess. I'm not a big fan, but I'll watch it if Gravity Falls or MLP (or Impractical Jokers :P) isn't on TV. I indeed think that it's quite overrated, considering the fact that the storylines are almost nonsense in my opinion; but I shouldn't judge, I have not watched that many episodes. It most likely gets a lot better, I suppose. It's good for what it is, but not my cup of tea. :)

I can't stand the term "overrated" so I wouldn't really use it to describe anything, let alone Adventure Time.

As for the show itself, Finn and Jake make it unbearable for me and if they weren't in it I'd like it. I've been meaning to give it another shot so who knows I guess.

This is exactly how I think of it actually, the show isn't for everyone and I know that I am not entirely a fan of how it's been executed but when it works it works well. Rebecca Sugar was a lot of the show's soul and you can tell that the show has declined from her leaving from a creative standpoint. Not at first but as time went on, the series started to suffer from her absence still managing to produce some good stories but not as consistently.

Not that she was the only reason it was good in the first place but she helped provide a balance that the show needed.

TLDR; Overrated isn't the word I'd use, especially considering the misuse of the word nowadays. I'd say that only watch certain episodes and ask fans which episodes you should watch and in what order. It is certainly not for everyone though.

@ those who don't like the word "overrated":

I always figured "overrated" referred to people who blindly like a show just because it's the "cool" thing to do, not because they genuinely enjoy it. Thus, the ratings would be higher than they should be because people are raving about it even though they don't honestly like it as much as they project. MLP had a lot of these types of fans back in the first few years it came out. I think Adventure Time does have a lot of these types of fans, and would thus be overrated by the above definition (and yes I know pretty much all fandoms have these fans, but I'm saying Adventure Time has an above average amount of them).

Anyhow, I personally don't like Adventure Time. I watched maybe two seasons worth and could never really enjoy it. I'm more of a person who enjoys plot, and while Adventure Time does hint at a deep plot, it rarely ever does anything with it. MLP is somewhat similar, but the characters are more likable and the episodes actually have consistent morals to them. Steven Universe is my current favorite, as it's almost entirely plot (plus the characters are deep and interesting). You can see at the beginning of the series that it had an Adventure Time sort of feel to it, and similarly I didn't enjoy the series much until it found its own style.
