Describing the Fandom

Hope Glimmer

Recommended Posts

I'm new here. In your own words, what should I expect? I've enjoyed the show from near the beginning (I hopped on when season 2 was about halfway through but of course started watching at season 1), and collected quite a bit. (Let's face it, they're adorable.)

But really, as far as other fans and the fandom as whole; how would you describe the community?

I'm sure there are a variety of people here.

Besides being fans in htis fandom they are pretty suportive of creations as songs, fanfics and drawings. Sure there are a few that might be harsh but most will be verry nice. Also somthing I have noticed is that most people in this fandom have been bullied once in their live and where a bit shy.

I'm probably one of the worst people for tackling this topic. xD  I'll use my words and try to be nice.

I don't particularly like the community as a whole.  There are definitely worthwhile individuals, but there's so much that flies in the face of whatever naive expectations I originally had when I first approached the fandom.  It might be that I simply don't fit, and I might not even want to.  But there's far too much in-depth analsis, bashing, prejudice, hypocrisy, and exaggerated pride for my taste.

That was, perhaps, overwhelmingly negative. ^ ^;  But there's also the chance that you'll luck out - like I did - and find something that makes everything worthwhile.

Hey there :)

As this topic discusses more about the general fandom rather than the show itself, I have moved it to a more appropriate section :)

Most fans are pretty kind and caring, and there aren't many people to watch out for. (There are still people you should avoid.) Sometimes we fans take things to seriously, but that usually isn't the case with everyone. If you don't like anything NSFW, try to avoid cloppers. I'm not saying they're bad, but anyone who is bothered by anything NSWF would want to stay clear of them.

But mostly, you'll enjoy it here. You may come across some arguments here and there, but this fandom is probably the kindest out there.

From my experience, it's not too different from the rest of the world, just a bit better.  On average, I find this community to be more accepting, tolerant, and intelligent than the outside world.  It's not perfect, but it's above average.  It's a refuge in here.

Well when I gave the show a chance which I never gave anything a chance then, I met a special somepony that changed my life and  I intend to be with her for the rest of it. So simply put, come for the show but stay for something else.

Honey Wings, my love, my life, together forever.

There's a lot of things that can be attributed to this fandom

  • It will make you gay and I'm not even joking
  • It's full of attention whoring
  • A lot of figurative autism
  • And a wide wide wide variety of special people and personalities

The last one is the only one worth being here for. I still often avoid the label of a brony.

People who put labels on themselves for attention to be honest. This is coming from a guy who used to be around here just to get attention for myself. There's no reason for any of it.

This is probably THE nicest fandom I've ever been in, with one of the biggest fanfic/fanart/fanmusic outputs I've ever seen. I love this fandom.

I've noticed that a lot of fandoms tend to have the same vibe/personality as the thing they're fans of has. And I think this fandom is no exception. :)

Most of us are really nice and in these forums you will always find nice people. Also the fandom itself brings on a good vibe even though we have some rude haters.

A group of people who takes a cartoon for kids way to serious.

You say that like it's a bad thing.  :toldya:

I don't think Socrates has any room to say on the matter of who is gay or not.

The Brony fandom nowadays is structured like a corporation. Its a top-down global community connected through big, influential, and inclusive entities like Poniverse, EQD, and Bronycon (and some of the other big cons too). The individuals, like the independent personalities and the successful, widely-recognized content creators that gave us some pretty cool stuff back in the day, have moved on. Yes, you still have plenty of popular Youtubers and deviantArtists and Brony musicians who are active, but I think that the attitude of the fandom in 2015 was one of consolidation and incorporation, and not as much as a blossoming of original content and memorable Brony "celebrities".

tl;dr- The fandom has much more centralized administration now than it used to.

This doesn't mean that the old, word-of-mouth, first-name-basis, individual content creator-driven days are all over, it just means the culture is in a different stage and has different priorities.

Why not? And I never said it was a bad thing.

Okay, well I was just using your comment to point out how ancient Greece was pretty gay especially the philosophers.

Don't kid yourself. From your comment all the things you listed were a meant to disparage members of the brony herd. And at the end you state "I still often avoid the label of a brony," which cements the intent of the list.

Of course I am. I meant that the fact it will make you gay isn't that much of a bad thing.

Objectively, this fandom is filled with so much attention whoring and this fake sort of "niceness" that it sometimes manages to disgust me.

I've seen the straightest guys joining the fandom and becoming couples, and for the autism, well, majority of the fandom is just a huge cringe contest.

The last point is a good one. You will indeed meet all sorts of people with different opinions, especially the open minded.

You didn't have to edit it. I didn't see when you did so.

You can say America is even gayer because it allows stuff like gay marriage. But that doesn't make you gay. Neither does the fact I am an Ancient Greek make me gay. Heck I had a wife and children!

The fandom is basically just like the entire world: full of individuals. Some are extreme...others are not. You'll encounter an critics left and right....but I wouldn't pay attention to those who bash critics because in all honesty EVERYONE is a critic in the fandom. Just know there's a line between overly crticial analyst and people who simply express opinion over things that doesn't appeal to them.

Overall, the fandom can be describes as OVERWHELMING. And that can be both a great thing and a bad thing. You will make awesome friends and despise certain bronies. You'll experience awesome things and encounter not so awesome things......the fandom is basically life but in this life.....everyone shares a common interest to MLP. Its like every other huge fandom
