Would you want to see a male alicorn?

I'd like to see Shining Armor become one, but it would take a story arc for the writers to pull it off, and considering even Celestia hasn't gotten her own episode yet, I don't forsee them investing that kind of screentime into another side character just yet. As for a completely new character that's a male alicorn? Well, sure I guess, but it would be much less preferable, considering we're just now getting yet another one. Shining Armor is in the perfect position to be one, already being a prince consort, likely a good, benevolent leader, and with enough screentime that it wouldn't be out of the blue.

 

No.  Long live the Equestrian matriarchy!

Equestria is most definitely not a matriarchy, it's quite clearly gender-egalitarian, as we've seen no indication whatsoever that one gender is advantaged or more dominant, and both gender seem equally influential and capable. There doesn't seem to be any real enforcement of gender roles, either. We've even seen plenty of socially and/or economically influential ponies of both genders, and in general there are mares and stallions in all sorts of position.

 

The idea that Equestria is some sort of matriarchy is simply not founded in reality, as everything points towards them having a level of gender equality far greater than even our own. You could refer to the top of their government as sort of a matriarchy due to the technicality of the female head of state version of the definition, since the current alicorns are female, but I don't find any basis in the idea that alicornhood would be restricted by gender. Also, while our exposure to politicians and ponies 'in power' is very limited other than princesses and princes, there have indeed been politicians and such of both genders. Either way, calling Equestria a matriarchy would be no different than calling the UK a matriarchy because it has a queen, and that just wouldn't be true. Based on everything in the show, I'm very sure that Equestria, is in fact, gender-egalitarian, and not a matriarchy or patriarchy.

 

Since we already have leaned that Cadence and Shining Armor had an Alicorn baby, it tends to suggest that there is no need for, as well as no such thing as an Alicorn Stallion. Since Shining Armor has proved he has the genetic ability to sire an Alicorn, Luna, Celestia, and *Gulp* Twilight, are keeping a close eye on him.

 

What? The alicorns don't exist just to breed more alicorns, they exist because they are good, benevolent rulers, and stuff of that nature, something that gender plays no role in. There's no less or more need for a male alicorn than a female one, as gender simply isn't something to consider for such a position.

 

There's not a chance that alicorns are female only, because either gender could potentially do the job, and discriminating on the basis of gender would be extremely sexist and would hurt the alicorns legitimacy and moral high ground, because you can't exactly claim to be the wise, benevolent rulers, and then discriminate who can join those ranks based on something as insignificant as gender. I see no reason whatsoever to believe alicorns are restricted by gender, it just has no reason to matter there.

I honestly don't know. If he was introduced beforehand with at least a bit of backstory, it might be kind of cool. But if he was introduced like Shining Armour, that would really suck. Maybe if the map summoned the mane 6 to a land full of alicorns, it would make sense, because if that existed there would have to be males. In general, I think it would be a really cool addition to the show, as long as it was done well.

Most definitely. Since we are getting yet another Alicorn, I would love to see at least one more and for it to be a male. I mean, why not have at least one? Unless Alicorns are strictly a princess thing, which would be kinda strange.

 

It would be strange but not unexpected. This is Hasbro-Land and they still believe in operating by Smurf Village rules for some reason. :s Though MLP has always done sliiigghtly better then Transformers in terms of gender ratio over the years.

Well, a ton of shows out there are based around strong male characters. So keeping a male alicorn out of the mix would make sure that the show continued to be about our strong mane six girls who aren't influenced by males at all. A good number of shows do the same thing, but backwards.

I would like to at least see one, but I won't be disappointed if one never shows up. Unless some plot point in the show, movie, or comics requires it there really isn't much of an impetus for there to be one in the first place.

TBH, there really are enough alicorns as it is, even if gender wasn't a factor. Equestria really doesn't need any more alicorns.

 

Instead, they should just work on getting their existing male characters on a better standing, particularly Shining Armor, who has been virtually nothing but a useless accessory for Cadance since they first appeared. The idea of merely putting the males in the "damsel in distress" role really doesn't strike me as progressive. Doing it once would have been alright, given the show's intended purpose, but nearly every time Shining Armor is used, he is quickly disposed of. It's amazing how someone who is defeated so easily is placed in a supposed position of respect in this world.

 

In some part, I'm grateful that Snips and Snails haven't gotten any speaking roles since Season 3. Big Mac has been making some strides toward being a more developed character even if "Brotherhooves Social" wasn't the best episode to do it, and it's really becoming old hat to keep saying the same things about Spike over and over again.

 

The main issue isn't to contrive male characters into any point of advantage. I just want to see them handled with respect.

I'm definitely happy having most of the main character be female, since that's part of what makes this show so great (y'know, hard to find good female leads anywhere), and I certainly don't want a power creep situation with too many alicorns, but I'd LOVE it if they'd refer to some ancient male alicorn, long since dead, perhaps in one of Twilight's texts.  It would be nice for gender balance, without tampering with the balance that we love about this show, and it would also end this silly debate over whether male alicorns can exist or not.  Of course they can.  Why wouldn't they be able to?
