SolyWack 482 February 12, 2016 Share February 12, 2016 I've been thinking about the songs in mlp lately, and even though there is a large variety in music, MOST of the songs mainly come down to two categories: Theatrical and Pop. BTW, I define theatrical as a song you could image being sung in a play or musical, and pop as songs with effects and voice modifications. Ex. Theatrical: Bats, Flim Flam Songs, the Filli Vinnili song, Pinkie's Lament, etc Pop: Smile, Let the Rainbow Remind You, Make Our Mark, True True Friend, etc. If you like other, more sparse styles, like Applejack's country-ish songs, feel free to say so, but also add which of these 2 categories if you can. Saroth 102 February 12, 2016 Share February 12, 2016 I prefer the theatrical ones to the pop ones. Some of my favorite songs in the show include Bats, This Day Aria and The Magic Inside, all theatrical ones. Signature and profile picture made by yours truly. Chuckles4lyfe 441 February 12, 2016 Share February 12, 2016 My gosh, this is a super difficult question to answer! Choosing between theatrical or pop really depends on what mood I am in. Some of my favorites in each genre are: Theatrical: The Magic Inside, Bats, This Day Aria, The Pony I want to Be Pop: Smile, I'll Fly, Make a wish (it's your birthday), In Our Town, Make this Castle a Home But, if I had to pick one Theatrical barely edges out Pop . #Squadgoals "But that day...The day I discovered racing...I proved that the legends were true. I made the impossible happen!"—Dash "Friendship isn't always easy, but there's no doubt it's worth fighting for."— Twilight Sparkle
Grepper 3,192 February 12, 2016 Share February 12, 2016 I prefer the theatrical sound. I'm not a big fan of overprocessed pop music. There's plenty of MLP songs I like that you gave as examples of pop, though. I usually listen to remixes or covers, anyway.
Akemi Homura 7,680 February 13, 2016 Share February 13, 2016 Pop is more powerful and easier to listen to. They should be using that more frequently.
Kyoshi Frost Wolf 41,212 February 13, 2016 Share February 13, 2016 While I think both are actually well done in the show, I think Theatrical has a slight edge thanks to the brilliant use of instruments within them. Pop just doesn't have that as much. The pop sound in this show definitely works though, Bad Seed is one of my favorite songs in the entire show and it has that sound. Stormlight 1,371 February 13, 2016 Share February 13, 2016 I like both types, but I would have to say I enjoy the more the Theatrical vibe of songs than pop-like songs. 1 Credit for signature goes to Eazyfries
Rainboom Dash 1,055 February 13, 2016 Share February 13, 2016 I really love the theatrical songs more, mainly because I'm a big fan of orchestral music. The pop songs are great too though.
KatonRyu 1,033 February 16, 2016 Share February 16, 2016 Pop wins out, slightly. I like most of the music in the series, but looking at the songs I listen to most often there seem to be more pop oriented ones in there than theatrical ones. Rarity Is Best Pony 634 February 16, 2016 Share February 16, 2016 I like the more pop inspired songs because they are so upbeat and happy. I mean with songs such as The Smile Song or Babs Seed how can others compete? However the more theatrical music is awesome to such as The Magic Inside which is such a beautiful song. Aurora Storm 83 February 16, 2016 Share February 16, 2016 I went with theatrical but I think we have a different idea of what theatrical is. I don't like Let the Rainbow Remind you but I love Make Our Mark and True True Friend and wouldn't consider those pop.True True Friend, especially at the end with all the Ponyville residents singing together seems VERY theatrical to me. My favorite songs are, At the Gala, The Smile Song. A True True Friend, You'll Play Your Part, and Hearts and Strong as Horses. So whatever you'd call that mash of songs. I do agree with I'll Fly as a pop song though (if the lyrics were different I could imagine hearing it on the radio) and I also love that one though, so really I like a bit of everything. (Except the stuff from Equestria Girls, really which are the most pop-like songs to me other than Ra-Ra's Razzle Dazzle song, neither of which I can stand...) Ashen Pathfinder 16,159 February 16, 2016 Share February 16, 2016 They both can be quite good, but if I had a preference it would be for the orchestral. Really, whether the orchestra is real or synth-based it adds a certain amount of depth and emotion that the more poppy-tunes exude; IMO. Drunk Not I Am 1,070 February 16, 2016 Share February 16, 2016 The Pop inspired ones have a better appeal to them for whatever reason, not that i don't like theatrical but i am going to pick Pop over it. Kapitan zur See Hans (Daz) 883 February 16, 2016 Share February 16, 2016 I like both styles quite a lot honestly. If I have to choose I would most definitely go with theatrical, especially because of "You'll play your part" and "This day Aria". Both of those songs are just so awesome in my opinion. 10InTheTardis 509 February 16, 2016 Share February 16, 2016 It's close, but I'd say pop. 10InTheTardis 509 February 17, 2016 Share February 17, 2016 Rainbow dash could go to a HM concert. Easy peasy I would say "But it's a kids show", but I mean, this is MLP, and there have been things that I'd say seem just as out of place. So I guess I don't really have anything to argue against you. Hello! Gabe Newell here! Signature removed, too confusing for new members. Thanks, and have fun. El Duderino 879 February 17, 2016 Share February 17, 2016 I think the theatrical songs flow with the show better. I don't really listen to MLP songs when I'm not watching the show. PinkieatHeart 208 February 18, 2016 Share February 18, 2016 I really like both, but "Disney-style" music conveys emotion much better, and significantly helps the storyline (and I'm not just saying that because I love Disney-like things, I swear. >.>').
