In terms of story, anime. Always. In terms of comedy, western. Nothing can touch it.

I grew up with both so I like both for different reasons.

Personally, I don't like Anime very much. Not that it isn't good, it's just that they style of animation kind of bothers me. I don't even know why it bothers me, but it just does.

I also watched more western style cartoons growing up, so they are closer to my heart.

Not one of those people who prefers one over the other, I find it a really fanboyish mentality. To me they're both animation, they're both on the same boat. I love my Megas XLRs, My Little Ponys and King of the Hills just as much as I love my Gurren Laganns, DBZs and Fullmetal Alchemists

I actually really enjoy both of them.

But I am more inclined to enjoy western animation as I have had more experience and exposure from it.

Although I have been watching a little bit more anime lately.

I must say that I am not a fan of animes, so I choose western animation. I don't like the animation style of animes and a lot of animes are so hectic, and I don't like this. I am also grown up with the good old disney shows like TaleSpin or Gummi Bears and the style of this shows is more what I like. Ok, I know some western shows with (in my opinion) bad animation and hectic ( a lot of the newer shows), but not so many as in animes. And when I talk about western animation, I more mean older disney shows and movies (also old western non-disney movies like Balto, Anastasia or An American Tail) because this is the style I really love.

I prefer western animation, the frames are smoother and more western styles appeal to me than anime. Anime's generally a bit too wierd or surreal for my tastes so it doesn't hold my interest very well.

Who you jiving with that cosmik debris?

Western animation, hands down. I really, really want to like anime, but I just can't. A lot of it has either over-the-top humour or really cynical themes. Although I shouldn't be saying that because my favourite anime is Madoka Magica, haha.

With western animation, a lot of it is more easy to watch and to get into because both the stories and the humour isn't nearly as exaggerated or complicated as seen in anime. That's not to say I don't enjoy a good story, but I always like it when things start out slowly and naturally. Not just that, but I've also seen more western animation shows growing up, so because of that many cartoons from the west are closer to my heart.

As much as I'm not too crazy over anime, there's still a few left that I'm hoping to watch sometime soon. I'm also always asking my friends which anime I should start out with, but I never get into watching it in the end.

You ask the impossible. I couldn't possibly choose one or the other.

If you wanted to count only new stuff I might choose anime since I don't have cable to watch new western stuff often but western cartoon has so many greats among its past and a much longer history to draw from. I also find I don't like much anime that's less than twenty years old.

There are some animes that I do love, Attack On Titan being one of my favorites shows of all time, but even then, I honestly think that anime in general is extremely overrated. Many anime shows fall under cliches that get tiring very, very fast. Western animation can have its cliches for sure, but anime just thrives on it. I did a rant about Death Note a long while back that shows this.

So I am going with western animation. It has more variety in its animation itself and I think the shows are mostly better.

If I had to pick between the two, I would have to go with anime because I think anime caters to a broader spectrum of audiences. You have anime made for kids, teens, and adults where as western cartoons are tend to cater to kids mostly with the exceptions of adult comedies, like King of the Hill, The Simpsons, Family Guy, etc., I will acknowledge that cartoons can be enjoyed by adults, but they are primarily geared toward a younger audience.

[insert cory in the house joke here]

I don't really care where animated shows are animated, if I enjoy it, I enjoy it, but I personally feel there's more western animated shows I'm interested in than there are animes. And don't get me wrong, I'm sure there are great animes out there that I haven't checked out myself, but most of my favorite shows, namely Steven Universe, MLP, Gravity Falls, We Bare Bears, The Simpsons and so on are western animated, so I'm going with western animation myself.

* as much as i'd love to say anime, it has to be western cartoons. i grew up more with those than anime, even though cartoon network and such were showing things like tenchi muyo and stuff when i was around 11 years old, but i still stuck to what i knew for the most part.

I've actually grown up with both western cartoons and anime. The two that I could remember clearly that came from both sides were Tom and Jerry, and Dragon Ball Z.

Though, because I've kept more interest on one side than the other lately, I would have to say anime has my vote.
