Helmets in the show just seem off

Something struck me when looking over Princess ember in the newest episode and her armor; Is it just me or are helmets in this show often just really uncomely?

Like, armor often looks really good, but when it comes tot the helmets or headgear that they package alongside body armor for characters, they tend to fall flat. Ember's helment looked way too "Busy",  being overly large and obstructive, and past helmets, like the generic and over used Spartan helmet that all ponies seem to wear with armor, just look like a turn off.

 

 

It just seems like  the artists of the show have a hard time coming up with good headgear designs.

The artists seem to be aiming for an Oni kawari kabuto for that helm, and not quite reaching it because of the level of detail necessary to make that helm actually look right.

I don't see that being an approved design for combat. I think it's meant to be more ornamental or ceremonial.

It's traditional.  In some versions of the legend of Sigfried, the dragon Fafnir has a Helm of Dread.  This is obviously that (at least for the fashion conscious)

Point out that the helmets will look off, simply because aesthetic purposes.

I mean, have you seen some of the traditional helmets humans have made? Some are downright impractical.

Great sum up of the episode. Anyway, Embers armor was meant to distract from the fact that she was Ember, so that's why it was all complicated and obstructive. I've only seen the spartan helmets on the royal guards for the princesses, so I'd guess they were more for impressiveness then for combat.

On topic response:  I think they helmets are ornamental/traditional and awesome looking. I think it's more important, from an audience standpoint to have good aesthetics than to shout out "look how practical this design is!"

I did notice that this design was rather bulky and seemed a tad...unconventional, but I think that was the point. To eliminate any sign of Ember and just look like some super high end awesome dragon. What better way than really over the top headgear? : D

They've also been on all the armor that the Mane six has worn, like Dash's Commander hurricane armor, Twilight's costume and dash and Fluttershy's Crystal armor

Plus, there's the helmets like what Sombra's troops wear. it just looks too much like they're going for a "tribal savage" look for them IMO.

Like, the fan artists of the community have made some really nice helmets for characters to wear; I just wish the staff would follow suit a bit more is all (Heck, I think even the comic writers have done a better job with helmets since the helmet chrysalis wears looks nice on her and Celestia and Luna's Helmets look great in the comics)

That's true. But culturally, pony helmets and dragon helmets SHOULD look very different in my opinion. It doesn't look THAT bad though keeping in mind the tooth looks a little bit off in the original post!

 

Look nice? Well it probably depends on the culture, which is my point exactly! I mean, have you seen the traditional Japanese?

The whole point of Ember's helmet was to keep her from being recognized. That's why is looked so busy and complicated.
