music Favorite electronic genres?

Grepper

Recommended Posts

What are your favorite genres of electronic music? It would also be nice to post your favorite examples of the genre. (I'm not using the term EDM because this isn't limited to dance music.)

I used to like progressive house a lot, but I realized that it's quite generic right now, like most of the "house" genre.

While I'm not familiar with the leading artists in most of these genres, I like complextro, future house, happy hardcore, and chilled out tracks (not sure of a genre name for this one, just music that's softer and more calming.)

As you can see, i'm a huge fan of dance music. :D

My favourite subgenere of EDM would be electro house. Examples would be deadmau5, Zedd, Knife Party, Steve Aoki and Porter Robinson's old songs before 2014.

I also kinda like progressive house, but i've outgrown it a little bit. I still enjoy some progressive house artists like Swedish House Mafia, Avicii, Calvin Harris, Hardwell etc. but i feel like it's beem a little generic lately.

I'm also into a bit of trance, like Tiesto and Armin Van Buuren.

However, there is one subgenre that I used to like but despised lately, that would be *cough* big room *cough*. :eww:

Otherwise, any EDM genre is appealing to me in my opinion. :) I always do enjoy raving to some sick beats now and then. :D

Isn't all edm, generic?

Many still define "edm" as not music and I can see why. It's generated with a lot of help of computers and really doesn't require a whole lot of music theory to make it all happen.

No. How can you say an entire genre of music is generic? Especially EDM which has many subgenres.

Many still define "edm" as not music and I can see why.

Who are these "many"? The only people I know who say EDM isn't music are old people, classic rock fans and some metalheads. Music is defined by the Oxford Dictionary as 'Vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion.' Does EDM do these things in one way, shape or form? Yes. Many electronic songs have 'beauty of form,' most if not all are harmonious and most in someway express an emotion; sadness, happiness, etc...

It's generated with a lot of help of computers and really doesn't require a whole lot of music theory to make it all happen.

Whether a song is created by electronic or traditional/acoustic means shouldn't determine whether a song is good or generic. The type of instruments used to create a song doesn't make a song bad; how those instruments are used does. You can have a personal preference of course, you can prefer acoustic instruments over electronic when it comes to the fidelity of the music's quality, but that's your own opinion. Your opinion does not represent what makes a song good or not.

While artists such as deadmau5 have no music theory education whatsoever, electronic music does not involve just pressing buttons and pop, a song is created. In electronic music, less time is focused on the writing of the song than traditional music. (Although this isn't to say there aren't any musically complex electronic songs), instead, more time is focused on creating the actual sound, using synthesisers and complementing effects. This is where electronic music is most difficult, requiring skill and experience; creating the right sound for the right moment to fit the other sounds is extremely difficult. People tend to overlook the amount of time and effort spent into the production of the leads, basses, chords, drums and other miscellaneous effects associated. You can pick any random synth preset from a synthesiser and place it into a song, but it isn't always going to be sonically pleasant, tuning that synth to accompany its setting is where EDM shines it's learning curve for musicians to educate themselves on.

Music theory is still prevalent among EDM musicians, but it's not as significant compared to the other technicalities behind their music. Most of them still need some music theory to produce songs, otherwise they'd have no clue how to string harmonious melodies and understandable compositions.

As my stance presented above has shown, I'm a fanatic fan of electronic music. Favourite genres are:

- Trance

- IDM

- UK Garage

- House

- Glitch

- Downtempo/Chill

- Abstract/Experimental/Drone/Atmospheric

- Vaporwave

- Other pretentious-sounding genres

I've honestly been into it all at some point. My current favorite would be electro house, electro swing and well dubstep although that genre is thrown around a lot so yeah. Oh really love house as well, this one is progressive house and honestly I love all genres big room, melbourne bounce, darkstep, deathstep, dnb you name it. It's very likely I've been into it or I'm still into it.

I think I see what you mean, I used to think progressive house was my favorite genre because of deadmau5, but when trying other progressive house songs, they all sound alike, with a singer and the same sounds. I can't find chill progressive house tracks like deadmau5's...

However, there is one subgenre that I used to like but despised lately, that would be *cough* big room *cough*. :eww:

Yeah that genre is awful, I don't understand how it can be so popular. Definitely my least favorite electronic genre.

Anyway my favorite genres would be liquid drum and bass, progressive house/trance, electro house, glitch/neuro hop and ambient.

Thanks, Holiday for compiling your statement. It may of seem where I can a upon a stumbling block in my musical preference and your statement reassured on why I liked listening to EDM. Back in the day, I try to find my "music" and electronic music stood out the furthest in my search. Like you said, it's a complex and harmonious mix of sounds that has to work in perfect finesse. Some melodies may put you into an dream state were others may induce you into a raving dancing maniac.

Dubstep... Nuff said.

If you are a really big fan of electronic music, then you should know Monstercat. That is something I'll listen to till the day I die.

Hmm...

Quite hard for me to list since I listen to a lot of different stuff and I don't even really know sometimes what's the genre of the stuff that I'm listening to.

But I think that one of my favorite electronic genres would be minimal electronic, one of my favorite artists in that genre is Popof, a lot of his work is incredibly mesmerizing to me.

I'll admit having a little bit too much love for deep house, the good old 90s deep house or even the most recent deep house tracks. Which are oftenly called future house sometimes? I don't know if that's right but yeah definitely love me some deep house.

I also looooove and adore EDM Trap, a lot of Trance, some Dubstep, I love the stuff that comes out of PC Music (I think they can be considered as an electronic genre tbh), Garage house, and uh I don't know xD

Aggro-tech is by far my favorite electronic music. To me, nothing else comes close. Groups like Hocico, Psyclon Nine, Suicide Commando, Grendel, and others. Basically that type of music. Can't get enough of it.

I don't listen to much EDM... well much MAINSTERAM EDM but there are a few genres that I'am very fond of

There are currently 2 electronic genres that I really enjoy. First off is Future Bass, Im not sure why I like this genre, I just do. I have come across several Future Bass songs I like, like Cloud Nine, and Reach by Grant Bowtie, VHS by Graves and Jupe, and Imagine by Internet Empire.

Second is Electro Swing, Jazz is my all time favorite genre of music so this should be expected. The way I see it, Electro Swing is basically a form of modern Jazz.

As for any favorite EDM musicians... I only really like Madeon, I mean Zedd, Calvin Harris, DJ Snake, Avicii, yeah they make OK stuff but I really wouldn't call myself a fan of any of them. Madeon is the closed thing to a mainstream EDM musician that I actually can call myself a fan of.

All the other EDM musicians I'am a fan of are just brony community nobodys. My favorite EDM brony musicians are Garnika, TAPS, and SilvaHound... yeah that's It really. I mean just like with the mainstream music, there are more well known people, in this case Living Tombstone and Glaze who make ok music but I don't like them enough to call myself a fan.

Brace yourselves, unexpected ultra-old-school reply is coming!

My favourite electronic genres aren't from the 21st century at all. In fact, they're from before DAWs, they're from before the Detroit and Berlin techno craze, they're from before Chicago Acid House turned the Roland TB-303 from a cheap piece of junk into a sought-after and expensive cult machine. They're partly even from before MIDI.

For starters, it's classic electronic music like it started in the 1970s. I'm a big fan of Jean Michel Jarre who became famous first for rather "organic" electronic music that stayed away from typical early electronic clichés and then in the 1980s for his gigantic concerts. I also like Vangelis who is most well-known for his movie soundtracks (e.g. Chariots Of Fire, Blade Runner) and Kraftwerk who were the first purely electronic band, who were the first in post-war Germany to make a brand-new kind of music with no influences from American and British rock & roll/rhythm & blues internationally popular, and who inspired most of the British synthpop craze.

In between, there are the late 1970s works by Giorgio Moroder such as "I Feel Love" by Donna Summer which Brian Eno predicted to define the club sound of the next two decades.

And then there are synthpop and similar electronic genres from mostly the early and mid-1980s. (In the second half of the 1980s, anything that wasn't metal was electronic.) It was a race of technological and stylistic advancement, also because much was produced by big names or in big studios that could afford the big flagship polysynths and sample-based drum machines and often had an outrageously expensive Fairlight or Synclavier. Of course, that was a time when tinkering and sound experiments were displaced by the (over)use of presets and commercial sample libraries, but that has a charm of its own.

I'm a huge fan of EDM and it all started with Monstercat like 3-4 years ago. I've fallen in love with it and still listen to this kind of music. I'm not a big fan of indie dance I must admit, but overall I like most of the genres the same. But my favourite ones are trap - some of the dirtier stuff especially music from Kannibalen and drum and bass where my favourite artists are Muzzy, Feint, Milano and many more. I really love the agressive dnb and the more chill liquid dnb. Helps me out with relaxing and dnb is just so full of emotions.

There is so much electronic music I love. I listen to house, garage, dubstep, drum & bass, trap, IDM, glitch hop, nu disco, trance, electro, techno...you name it.

My most favourite genre has to be dubstep because of how diverse it it. Don't let the awfully mastered stereotypical random noise fool you :P

You get really chilled out early dubstep like this:

and then you get crazy vigorous bangers like this:

Two completely different styles, same genre, much love :fluttershy:
