general What are you doing for Thanksgiving ?

I'm going to punch a turkey to death with my bare hands and then eat it in front of a hungry time-traveling pilgrim.

We're probably gonna go to my brother's for Thanksgiving dinner; I ordered a fancy dessert online that I don't have to pay for until February. : D

Well the day before Thanksgiving I'll be going to a Thanksgiving dinner my old dive school is hosting for the students who aren't travelling home for the holidays or have family to have Thanksgiving with.

On Thanksgiving, I'll be visiting my mother, stepfather, sister, father, stepmother, and grandfather and eating with them.

I'm going to be a VERY full pony after those two days....

"I could have been happy above if I'd never donned the copper carapace and dipped my head beneath the waves to hear the muddled man-made sounds. Distorted and dreamlike droning. The whir and thrashing of a distant propeller, the tumultuous thundering thud of fogbound freighters. Mud underfoot, no sights, except the grasp of a diver's trained hand, dreaming of distant lands knowing all the while this is what I love, not the blue skies and wondering faces above. Canvas, rubber, brass, copper, and glass. Leather and lead, mud and sweat, heaving around in dark, damp depths seldom seen by most yet talked about by all. As if a sunny, happy place where mermaids and seahorses play and chests of gold are lain bare, untarnished by salt and time for all to grasp who are bold enough to go below..." -"Deep Sea Diver", Steven L. I'll likely head home for the break and spend that time with family. Of course that includes Thanksgiving dinner.  :P

I usually spend it at my parents' house along with my brother and sister, who also come over. We have the classic turkey dinner with stuffing, all the trimmings, and pumpkin or pecan pie for dessert. Then, my brother watches football with my dad, and I play Monopoly with my sister (after helping mom with the dishes and clean-up) and watch a recording of the Macy's Parade from earlier that morning. In the evening, we stuff down turkey sandwiches and watch A Christmas Story before passing out from overindulgence.  :-o

If I don't go to my mom for the dinner like I usually dd, I might go to my brother's place instead. His girlfriend is a pretty good cook. :3 She usually makes a good variety of food too. So a great meal while haning out with some family and friends, that is all I need.

I live in Canada, so we've already had Thanksgiving.  Most places were closed that day, so yeah, we still celebrate Thanksgiving here.  I live in a small town so I guess that's why most things closed that day.

Moving out of my apartment actually. It's weird I know. Thing is I graduated recently so I'm moving back home but if I don't start now, nothing's going to happen over Christmas. So what we're going to do is my immediate family, parents and both brothers, are going to come down here and help me move out over Thanksgiving. It will be work, but we'll all be together.

Nothing. I don't celebrate it anymore. Hell the US doesn't celebrate it anymore, all we care about is Black Friday anymore.

That is the real holiday.

Then all of these other posts must be in my imagination. You know growing up I was accused of not being "realistic" in my worldview but as I've spent my years on this Earth it's always seemed to be the cynics and misanthropes that are blinded by their own perceptions and the optimists willing to view the world as a whole. They may think it could be better, but they do see the actual world and not just a rain cloud filter.

No, you aren't imagining things and you are not wrong... but I was also heavily exaggerating with my statement to some degree and tossing on far more sarcasm than was probably called for.

It also does not change the fact that a set of forum posts does not tell the whole story. Thanksgiving is still a very big holiday, don't misunderstand me... but it has also just become the day before Black Friday in the US to a very large portion of the country and it is still growing... over commercialism and capitalism have put a heavy taint on several of our holidays and although many people and their families can still ignore this and enjoy the holiday, the fact is many are just more interested in getting the holiday over so they can either spend, or make more money... which in turn creates a spiraling effect that grows ever larger. And obviously that is their right, no one has any right to tell anyone else how they should spend or enjoy the holiday. But there is no denying that American holidays are nothing like they were.. whether that is a good thing or bad thing is open to individual interpretation... not everyone is effect equally by these changes after all.

It is cynicism, make no mistake about it, and I make no apologies for that, but living in a place where it is all but encouraged to hurry through the holiday and get back to work, and growing up through the years and seeing the massive changes that have occurred, it is not so easy to just try to look for a silver lining IMO. I am glad so many people can truly spend time and enjoy the holiday, but at the same time sad because so many are unable to due to the continual changes in the direction it, along with others, seems to be taking. I do think and wish the world could be better, but steering it in a direction I prefer (or dream of) and getting everyone to agree with that is a whole entirely different story.

@@GrimGrimoire,

I understand and I am sorry both for sounding like I was dismissing you personally as well as your local situation. I still don't %100 agree with you but I'm more willing to let bygones be bygones now that the sarcasm is dropped. Forgive me, sarcasm and hyperbole frustrate me to no end and that's when either don't fly right over my head.

For what it's worth, Happy Thanksgiving.

It's an annual tradition that my parents or an extended relative hosts a Thanksgiving gathering, where we have dinner. It's often potluck-styled, where everyone shows up with a traditional Thanksgiving dish. Once we've eaten ourselves silly, the family will usually watch football games and talk until everyone goes home to sleep it off! :P

I'll be celebrating a tradition that started up in 2012 between me and the family of one of my friends: feasting on a traditional turkey dinner, to be followed up with a gargantuan peanut butter pie. It's the one time out of the year this 135lb loser takes in more calories in one sitting than in a typical day.  :D
