Why bother with practicing spells?

In "Wonderbolts Academy", AJ told Pinks that Sunbutt had Twilight working on new spells. In "To Where and Back again", we see Twilight testing Super op sayain Starlight powerful spells, when we've been beaten over the head with the fact that friendship magic is the way to go.

Why are they even bothering with op race unicorn magic and spells? (Especially for princess of friendship to be testing Super Sayain Starlight?)

They've always said friendship is the only way, but friendship in the real world doesn't create magical rainbow lasers  :-P at least that kind of magic isn't supposed to be friendship magic. I don't see what's wrong with teaching it, the fact that they use magic doesn't mean friendship is any less important, it's just an element of their world and something that happens to be both Twilight's and Starlight's talent.

Because they like magic.

Because they want to improve.

Because they want to learn new spells.

Because friendship magic does not do squat outside of vanquishing monsters that don't believe in it.

Yeah, I totally agree. Friendship isn't going to help work a farm, or fight someone like Starlight Glimmer.

Because magic has always been a big problem in ANY story in ANY genre.  The hero has to overcome problems or there is no story.  If magic can do anything, where's the problem?  It is very important to show magic has limits & can't solve everything.  Showing that spells need to be studied  is one way to do this. (that is the wizard can't do everything & hast spend time & effort to do what he can)

It's so they can have some way to defend themselves before they get the lesson of friendship over their enemy. You can't get the lesson of friendship over your enemies when you've been eaten, crushed, disemboweled, burned, frozen or blasted into little pieces.

Twilight, Starlight, and Sunset--when she was in Equestria--were dedicated towards learning magic as they were inherently interested in learning as many spells as possible. Each of them had their own goals with regards to what they planned on using their magical knowledge for, and while the latter two ended up abusing the magic they had been taught, they remained dedicated to the cause. If they want to use magic for whatever reason, they'll do so otherwise learning so much for so many years would've been a waste of time.

Yeah but then magic can also cause problems just as easily that need solving.
