ManaMinori 4,145 November 10, 2016 Share November 10, 2016 Thanksgiving. A time for reflecting on being grateful for everything you have..but it gets steamrolled by Christmas, not even making a blip on the radar (soon as Halloween is over, everyone starts putting up Christmas decor). Is it laughably contradictory that a holiday exists, and soon after y'all are trampling each other for more material possessions and celebrating consumerism and acquisition of material possessions around a dead bush? 2 Under the Jellicle Moon- a site with cuteness, cat boys, and comic strips / Star Dreams Fanclub

GeekySonic 1,150 November 10, 2016 Share November 10, 2016 Nope. Halloween is about having fun, Thanksgiving is for being grateful, and Christmas is for sharing and quality time. That's how it's always been for my family. I think it's ridiculous how fast Christmas springs into relevance, but hey, I ain't gonna stop folks from doing something harmless that pleases them. Also, my dead bush is made of plastic, and I'll happily take any material possessions (even socks). Check out my voice-acting demo reels on Casting Call Club, if you'd like. Red Cedar 1,408 November 10, 2016 Share November 10, 2016 In Canada, we celebrate Thanksgiving before Halloween so it manages to stay significant until the Christmas decor comes out. Unfortunately, this usually means that the Christmas decor comes out immediately after Halloween. At least in tge U.S. there is still an accepted three-week reprieve for November. GrimGrimoire 4,973 November 11, 2016 Share November 11, 2016 Really? Wow... They're getting earlier and earlier. The first week of October Santa Clause was up in my local Walmart and waving to the customers as they walked into the store and 2 weeks later Christmas music was on the intercom. I love Thanksgiving as a holiday... it was one of my favorite times of the year and spending time with family was the greatest for that holiday alone, even more than Christmas for me. It is why it gets frustrating to me now to see everything and everyone around me only seeming to care about the Black Friday sales that come the day after. Obviously I know a lot of people still celebrate it, but sometimes it is hard to see under all the other crap pushed in your face. ~No profound statement needed~

Here in Canada, they dedicate a bit of time to Thanksgiving although it gets completely overshadowed by Halloween. Heck, they start promoting Halloween where I live at the beginning of September. KatonRyu 1,033 November 11, 2016 Share November 11, 2016 We don't even have Thanksgiving here. Here, in September the stuff for Sinterklaas comes out (widely known as 'the Dutch Santa Clause' and indeed based on the same person, St. Nicholas). Then in October suddenly Halloween stuff appears, to be immediately replaced by more Sinterklaas stuff when that's over. This carries on until December 5th, after which the Christmas stuff appears in full force, after already surreptitiously appearing as early as September. Then after Christmas it's only about a month before the easter eggs begin to show up.
Kyoshi Frost Wolf 41,730 November 14, 2016 Share November 14, 2016 If I recall, Thanksgiving isn't necessarily about giving thanks despite the name. From what I have read, the holiday is more meant for having a day where you DON'T have thanks. A day without worry. A day to just enjoy a pleasant meal with family and friends. I like that a lot more. I do agree entirely that the holiday is pretty much forgotten about these days in terms of mainstream stuff. Christmas stuff starts popping immediately after Halloween these days and considering that is just some stupid corporate ploy, it annoys me. cmarston1 5,959 November 14, 2016 Share November 14, 2016 I think it is more ironic that a holiday supposedly about being thankful about life, immediately we get the horrible greed that comes from Black Friday.

Merrypaws 71 November 14, 2016 Share November 14, 2016 My country (Finland) doesn't have either Halloween or Thanksgiving, so for us, after the 'back 2 school' sales on school supplies, it's like this countdown to when it's acceptable to haul out all the Christmas stuff. Be glad you Americans. Be glad.

Only Canada and the US really celebrate Thanksgiving. Europe usually doesn't do it, if at all. And forget about Asia. Canada's Thanksgiving comes before Halloween, so it usually gets mashed up with Halloween merchandise...which is why you don't see it very often. It's also commemorated for the French colonials and English explorers that came in the 16th and 17th century. On the other hand, the US celebrates it on the fourth week of November, to commemorate something entirely different: the Pilgrim's first harvest in America. Interestingly, Liberia has a Thanksgiving too, though it's for the colonization from freed black slaves in 1820.
