80's stuff? 80's stuff.

You like Huey Lewis and the News?

Β

Their early work was a little too new wave for my taste.Β But whenΒ SportsΒ came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically.Β The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter,Β cynical sense of humor.

Β In '87, Huey released this;Β Fore!, their most accomplished album.Β I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip To Be Square".Β A song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity and the importance of trends.Β It's also a personal statement about the band itself. Hey, Paul!

On an honest dissection: Huey Lewis also represents a conservative safeness in popular music that's typical of the Reagan brand. Huey doesn't really establish much in the way of being forward thinking or edgy. And while Patrick Bateman in American Psycho may have gone on about a cynical sense of humor, Huey is still musically tied to a sort of faux-fifties aesthetic that comes up time-to-time in eighties pop-culture establishment. Like in the Back to the Future segment of Luke Skywalker Can't Read by Ryan Britt argues that Huey represents a safe middle-America identifiable with "Anywhere, USA" that also itself represents the home-town setting of Back To The Future.

Β

If I'm to be honest, the OST for the 1984 movie The Killing Fields is probably a better choice for me towards music. In particular: Mike Oldfield's work for the track Evacuation which is full of overt panic in its hard-synth madness.

Β

It really complimented the scene it was used for well.

Β

I wish a fuller version of the scene existed on YouTube, but alas it does not.

This always reminded me of Ohio winters, particularly in the hillier eastern parts of the state.

Β

Also, Kate St. John is cute.

I really like 80s music, especially some of the rock ones. Queen, Michael Jackson, Kenny Loggins and then some. My favorite 80s album is Top Gun. You cannot tell me that Top Gun doesn’t have some of the greatest 80s sons without getting some negative response. Best 80s songs to me.

Sadly some of the videos on here need to be deleted and reposted as the contents are no longer viewable for whatever reasons. That or edits for more detailed description of the artist and song so people know what the missing video originally was.Β

Just a thought to improve this thread.
