Driz 1,552 January 5, 2017 Share January 5, 2017 (edited) It's really hard to tell... Technology is getting crazy! That whole virtual reality deal is really the way of the future, and I'm sure people can clearly understand that... 4D, 5D, 6D, it won't stop. I'd like to invest in the idea that video games will eventually become one of the most dominant forms of media. They are works of art, after all. Also, hopefully it'll become more broadly accepted within the customary society, and stop being crucified as something unhealthy and/or childish. Slowly but surely I'm sure we'll be able to achieve that, since e-sports events are becoming bigger and bigger by the second, for instance. In my opinion, if chess can be considered a competitive sport, I don't see why video games can't. But I digress. Ganondorf8 11,383 January 5, 2017 Share January 5, 2017 Every generation, both Sony and Microsoft push the graphical capabilities of consoles as far as they can go until the technology comes along that allows them to go even further. Some third party developers do the same thing or even exceed what Sony and Microsoft are capable of probably due to knowing some advanced techniques. Nintendo, on the other hand, will likely push the innovative side of the industry to new levels. They might even come up with a way to play games that doesn't involve using a controller. I know that sounds like I'm jumping the gun, but it is certainly a possibility.
Envy 6,200 January 5, 2017 Share January 5, 2017 In general: F2P and bad DLC practices will overtake more and more franchises. Virtual reality. Ugh. For Nintendo: The Switch will be too weak for third party titles once again. Mario series franchises will become more and more stale. Pokemon will continue with excessive Generation I pandering. Nintendo will release and ruin more series by releasing them on the mobile platform. 2 Everything needs more woodwind!
Scrubbed user 3,417 January 5, 2017 Share January 5, 2017 The way I see it, it depends on whether VR actually does become a thing. We have the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, but hardware requirements and price of the devices themselves is not exactly practical for everyone. There is also Playstation VR, and Microsoft is also working on one. We also have the Samsung Gear, which is pretty much a plastic box strapped to your head with a phone inside it. But how many people are buying these devices? Sales of both the Rift and Vive have dropped of dramatically. Not just hardware, dedicated software is also kind of scant, and most of it isn't much more than a tech demo. If VR turns out to just being a temporary fad, then I guess gaming will stay pretty much the same in terms of innovation.
Kyoshi Frost Wolf 41,789 January 5, 2017 Share January 5, 2017 In the next few years? Probably won't be too much different. VR will most likely die down a lot, more crappy Call of Duty games will be released, the Switch will receive a resounding 'meh' and show its weaknesses and season passes will continue to flood most games despite being a poison. I don't think gaming will change drastically for a good while.
Techno Universal 2,575 January 5, 2017 Share January 5, 2017 Probably were going to get to the point where you get uploaded into a computerised world when you join a game. Possibly it will be within the next 50 years. 1 Message from UNIT: UBC-001 (Original image used made by @chaosprincess signature composed by @Kyoshi) My theory of MLP OC: Techno Universal ask me!: Link
stripper 252 January 6, 2017 Share January 6, 2017 Console gaming will overall decline in popularity, PC gaming will overall rise, esports will continue to grow, more games will adopt FTP with RNG DLC, virtual reality will be a flop 1 Funny & epic Smash Bros Melee videos https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dj_54hAA3f0&list=PUtu4yuaEIBcYYMnZie43sfQ 4,300 subscribers
Steve Piranha 29,440 January 6, 2017 Share January 6, 2017 I dunno, I think in terms of technology: is growing so fast that i fear it might get stuck. Also a collapse might be possible; not as big as in the 80s, but many companies will kick the bucket, and that's because many hated practices will cover more games . Also VR will grow to be a viable gaming device 1 Sig by Discords
Kairo 49 January 12, 2017 Share January 12, 2017 Gaming is going to advance a lot in the next few years, there are already plans for a sensor to feet on VR now, and it's looking pretty good already. A bunch of highly anticipated games are also coming in few years, some of with have some very high expectations to fulfill. Games seem to have pretty good graphics already, i can't really find them improving any more than they are already, besides in VR. As for everything else, i believe that a lot of companies and indie developers are going to explore new actions and possibilities with games, possibly a non-linear story game that can end in literally any way, but that would of course take a lot of time and a very good system of A.I. As for the most exciting stuff to come, (not sure if it's already here, i'l test it tomorrow" Microsoft and maybe sony are planning on adding mouse and keyboard support to the Xbox One and PS4 along with the ability to play cross-platform, Sony and Microsoft along with the PC will all be able to play together on the same servers on some games, both Microsoft and Sony have talked about the possibility of it, and they seem to be on pretty good terms as of now. 1 "That squirrel almost killed my dog" Me- 2017
Envy 6,200 January 14, 2017 Share January 14, 2017 Mario series franchises will become more and more stale. Well, it looks like I was wrong you all. I'm happy to say it. Concerned Bystander 2,903 January 20, 2017 Share January 20, 2017 (edited) Endless iterations of the same few franchises with improved graphics and bigger maps but ultimately no significant innovations in gameplay. People continue to lap them up, and as long as that remains the case then the industry has little incentive to do anything different. Safer for them to trot out yet another sequel than to take a chance on developing something new. Discordian 6,015 January 20, 2017 Share January 20, 2017 It's gonna be the same that it's always been, really. Games come out, people play them, people review them. Gaming has never really changed much aside from a few particular innovations like the online markets. The only thing that ever really changes is how popular certain genres are. These days it's the MOBAs that are popular for the online games. There's a lot of shooters still but they aren't as big as they were a few years ago seemingly.
Olsen1987 133 January 20, 2017 Share January 20, 2017 it will be awesome in 2017, especially regarding VR.Fallout 4 is being rereleased this year, rebuilt from the ground to support full VR.Doom too.But when speaking of normal games played on monitors/TV's...not sure, but there is always the chance that some major titles will be revealed, hopefully.I'm waiting for the next Elder Scrolls game and Half Life 3.But...valve is apparently currently making a new game, set in the same universe as HL/Portal, so maybe some news about that (knowing valve, getting info is highly unlikely).
Mast. Equestos/Gigas 340 January 20, 2017 Share January 20, 2017 Since VR is becoming big in the industry. I would predict more Battlefield games will come out that are remastered. Further more, Sony will probably announce another version of the ps4 console, since the X-Box Scorpio is on its way.Yet still I will not get the DLC or pre order the games if it functions properly. Instead of the graphical inputs and that is all. 1 "With No Light, There Can't Be Darkness. Without One Of Them, There Is No Balance. Hence, Reality Will Cease To Exist. EpicEnergy 23,224 May 10, 2021 Share May 10, 2021 Probably similar to what it is today, except more advanced like extremely realistic graphics. I doubt virtual reality will replace standard gaming because not everyone likes to have screens that close to their face and not everyone likes to move around excessively while gaming. I think the majority of gamers in the future will stay away from virtual reality because of those reasons, not that virtual reality will be nonexistent in the future but rather that it will not be as popular as everyone thinks. *totally not up to any shenanigans*
Phosphor 11,532 June 22, 2021 Share June 22, 2021 Gaming will be far more advanced than anything I have. Other than a few modern platforming games on my pc, I'm still stuck in the PS2 era. 50 years from now, we might get fiber internet. Concerned Bystander 2,903 July 21, 2021 Share July 21, 2021 The relentless march towards homogeneity will continue. Civilisation 10 will be an open-world first person shooter. Mario Kart Super Ultra Redux will be an open-world first person shooter. Candy Crush The Revenge will be an open-world first person shooter. The only game that won't be an open-world first person shooter will be Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 17 which will be a retro isometric turn-based strategy game. Vefka 1,499 July 24, 2021 Share July 24, 2021 I have high hopes for gaming in 40-50 years. With the current uprising of neural AI (AI Dungeon, coherent chatbots, etc) and growth of VR (with HL Alyx being the first actual game released for VR), I expect big progress in AI and immersion Just imagine the replayability of a game with characters who react to player's decisions appropriately. Or completely sandbox games where you build the story yourself As for VR, I think devs would find a way to immers you in games even more than VR does now. Maybe scientists will even find a way to trick a brain and provide senses generated by a computer, not from a body, which would mean full immersion without need of digitalizing the brain
