Starlight is a fresh character and I see bits of my personality in her. She just needed more episodes in Season 6.

Also, I really like the idea of a student for Twilight, sort of allowing Twilight to pass on what she learned from Celestia and her experiences over the first few seasons.

But both Spike and Twilight are main characters. No Twilight didn't defeat Starlight. She only stopped her when Twilight convinced Starlight she could change.

But the races of dragon and alicorn are outside the main three, and thus don't upset the balance of the force.

Twilight did defeat Starlight in combat, at one point she completely froze her. The kids watching just thought it was cool and stopped the race to watch, so Twilight had to recent it again. Twilight was also able to pull her though the portal to show her the desolation, which she wouldn't have been able to do if Starlight outclassed her.

You're correct, but it's not because Twilight couldn't defeat Starlight Glimmer in magical combat (she could and did), but because Starlight Glimmer had leverage in the situation. All she had to do to defeat Twilight was destroy was destroy the map.

The whole set up is the Sonic Rainboom is ruined no matter who wins in magical battles, but i have notice something, Twilight and Starlight are Both Exhausted after the fight before the 3rd timeline... THEY ARE BOTH EXHAUSTED, alicorn vs unicorn and they are both tired at the same time? Yup, Starlight has same stamina like an alicorn and even more cunning. I think your opinion is legit afterall.

I liked her as a villain because she was scarily competent, and I like her as a reformed character because her way of thinking isn't really all that different to before, just her perspective, and I think that got shown well. The only I don't like about her is her backstory because I still think she went full Stalin with basically no reason.

Currently don't like her, and overall, it's going to require a ton of changes on her part for my opinion of her to improve.

For starters, the writers really need to stop hoisting her up on a pedestal while also simultaneously displaying just what a terrible person she is. In fact, I will be stunned if she doesn't continue to abuse others with magic in season 7. She's certainly learned pretty well by now that she can do whatever the hell she wants to anyone she wants without having to expect any greater consequence than a simple slap on the wrist, if even that.

She needs to stop being so utterly dependent on magic to solve everything, she needs to have some more positive interaction with the mane five and show that she actually wants to be friends with them and vice versa, and she needs to stop making jokes out of her past actions, because it feels like a complete slap in the face that she can consistently joke about something that she most certainly should have been locked up for.

I myself actually really like Starlight, as I can pretty much relate to her. True, her backstory seemed a bit rushed, but it sort of reminds me of my life as well; I, like Starlight, did have at least one friend before but for several reasons I became isolated for a while, and only after a few years ago or so I ended up finding company again (and to this day forward I'm still not keen on hanging out with others). I didn't take the path of making others my friends like Starlight did though lol. And gone back in time to prevent an important event from happening which unintentionally caused horrific changes to the present time...

My own explanation for her magical prowess is that she probably practiced a lot in her life and done a lot of research (which, according to an earlier post here, was also shown in the show), not to mention that her genetics (or whatever) may also allow for better magic manipulation which as a result makes her a natural. I'd like to take Sunburst (an untalented spellcaster) and Twilight (a unicorn with magic potential), two unrelated ponies, as a comparison example here; if I'm not mistaken, both of them studied magic as much as they could, yet they operate different levels of magic, and since they're not related I assume it's because of their different genetics.

Except Starlight Glimmer got restored after each encounter because of the time loop, while Twilight was drawn through hell each time between spars. Starlight is definitely extremely powerful, but not quite on alicorn level.

If "research" was all it took, then you'd expect Sunburst to be just as powerful.

I explicitly stated that she was already a very powerful unicorn. I got the episode wrong, it was the flashback in S6E1, not S5E26, but there you can see Starlight Glimmer was an extremely powerful unicorn even as a filly (if you pay close attention she's clearly much better at it than Sunburst), she just lacked confidence in her abilities.

As a antagonist Starlight's approach and world view made her one of the deeper villains, even if her final motivation was a little lackluster. In Season Six I liked her just fine. In general she is a decent character who has had some great episodes.

I have grown a little weary of the type of redemption arc where a redeemed character deals with guilt that manifests in negative consequences for others. They have used this three times so far, and even though they haven't completely repeated it, it is getting old.

I can understand the fatigue some have with the character, and why they call her a Sunset clone, but they still managed to make Starlight interesting and unique enough to the point I am anticipating her next appearance.

So I like her just fine. Need to see her interact with the other characters one-on-one more though.

I'm not a huge fan.  She is an affront to my sense of justice, she took pleasure in harming others but was never held to account for her actions.  I get that forgiveness is in the very nature of the cartoon, and although forgiveness is indeed important, so is people taking responsibility for their own actions.

Research and natural talent, Sunburst did most of the research when they were young, but Starlight was simply a natural. Natural talent doesn't really need an explanation in my opinion, some people are just born like that.

I hate her because she was an amazing villain who was given the worst possible backstory and an absolutely cringe-inducing redemption song that slaughtered several potential episodes that showed her growing past her villainous past and learning to be a fully-functioning member of society

Then she's relegated to a mere handful of episodes in Season 6 and given no character growth, then has the audacity to be the "hero" of the Finale

It's infuriating

She was a great villain who was given a piss-poor backstory and motivations, never faces the consequences of her actions and is given everything on a silver platter.

Hell she still gets away with doing stupid shit(like mind control) and gets nothing more than a slap on the wrist.

She never develops much, nor are we given any actual development with her friendship with the mane 6 other than Twilight, and that ends with a gigantic middle finger at Twilight("I SPEND ALL MY TIME WITH YOU BUT FUCK YOU MY BEST FRIEND IS TRIXIE"). Not to mention, the show never shows us seeing her building relationships and growing, they just tell us and wants us to assume she does anyway

She gets all of this without ever earning anything, including a fucking starring role in finale

No offense to anyone who likes her, but I hate Starlight Glimmer. I mean, how could the mane 6 forgive her so easily after she tried to brainwash them, stole their cutie marks and even go back in time to prevent twilight and her friends from getting their cutie marks ALL because she lost ONE FRIEND!? I mean, she could've made a new one during that time...

...and to top it all off, she is a complete Mary Sue...
When you consider the princesses and how they are able to control the Sun and the Moon, to have the ability to go back in time and (ALMOST) change the course of history is too much...

There are many reasons why I don't like her (stealing cutie marks, trying to brainwash everyone, trying to destroy Equestria because of stupid reasons, being way too strong, ...) but I think one of the main reasoons doesn't even have anything to do with her. It's because of some hate stories I heard about (just a few details) and Starlight's time travel episode was shortly after that. Now I have to think about that hafefics when I see/htink about Starlight

and she was forgiven way too easily. Sunset at least proved that she changed and had a hard time after her evil plans

I love Starlight, and its expected of many fans to be unforgiving and wrathful towards her per say encompassing the exact nature that she herself is transcending beyond. Not just because she is talented but because she has some definitive personality traits that give her complications assimilating and creating new friendships... I mean, she just put her life on the line to save Equestria, "nbd... she hasnt changed" xD Nah Starlight is awesome, she was cool as a villain, and her philosophy has indefinitely changed, and wanting picture perfect protagonists in a show about personal character development is hogwash. I empathize with Starlight because she is genuinely trying to better her character and make meaningful friendships, all while being treated illegitimately like some type of evil abomination mutant creature, being untrusting of her is understandable, but as her character and who she is now, you have more hate for her than she could possibly have for you (if she were a real character) She reformed a civilization.... not just another misguided pony... she made mistakes, and she realized that her philosophy was misguided and you cant condense the talents or well being of others.... I think there are SEVERAL definitive differences between her and Sunset, but both of their character reformations seem genuine to me... and No Second Prances, is an incredible episode... my favorite of the entire franchise.

I un s erst and why we needed her but she is just very ..unlikable. I can't really place it.

Gimmie sunset shimmer anybday.

its the hive mind syndrome..(something that causes people to dislike a certain person in real life at that, they dont need a legitamate reason, other people dont like her so, why not join in, they are unfamilar to you, so why not) bronies that dislike her like to join in the "im a hipster, this is my show, im tired of reform characters, i wont forgive her ever ever ever!" thing.... but I agree Sunset is incredible, but she shouldnt come back to Equestria, she needs to be the absolute main character of Equestria Girls, because she is what many of us want out of Equestria Girls

I don't think I fall into that catagory. I guess thinking more deeply I'm still upset they totally screwed up Starlight as a character.

They won points back when the queen didn't reform but Starlight actually was a competent villain..and yet somehow...despite having Twilight dead center in her sights...she turns a 180.

I don't buy it.

Hate..is a powerful fuel. Sometimes you can't stop hate you just have to deal with its collateral damage. To know when to do so is the important part. That's a lesson there we need. When to realize something isn't worth the time.

But no..we had to make a friend x.x

Additionally. Sunset needs to return but not stay. She needs to settle with Celestia. Otherwise she'll just never get closure and it will fester.

Actually that could be some decent material there...conflict of one's self. Ect ect.

Maybe she shouldn't come back xD
