Are the writers pushing Starlight too hard?

I feel like the writers have been the way that Pinkie was, with Maude and Starlight in this new episode, with the fans, for some time now. Aggressive in trying to get us to like her, and so they just come off as overbearing, and putting Starlight in everything, hoping that we like her. I gotta say- I still don't. But whether I do or not isn't the discussion. Are the writers too pushy with Starlight? Is she oversaturating the show with her presence?

Geez, I hope not! Starlight wasn't even confirmed in Rock Solid Friendship in the first place, but despite that, made frequent appearances there. It could, but shouldn't happen again with Fluttershy Leans In.

Giving Starlight a chance to hang out with Maud(and to a lesser extent, Pinkie), this is actually something I think they should have done more in S6

We'll just have to see. She will become a big part of the show and you need to make her devolep. And this way you also get new stories since everypony has met her already except of Starlight till now.

So, I think it was a riscy, but nice descision. It fits quite well.

Nah. Not in my view. Its good to see a newer character instead of the same old 6 that have been around for 5-6 years, its time for something new.

there's hundreds of background ponies that could've shown up and replaced starlight for this episode. =_= it didn't HAVE to be Starlight.

I'm not seeing that way. I think her redemption was too fast and rushed. Not really pushing her on us, just didn't take enough time.

But I do like her. I thought her apperances so far this season dont feel forced at all.

I actaully really like the starlight maud dynamic. As well as the trixie one this season

If their hopes are to use her agressively to get us to like to like her, they succeeded with me. In a few episodes she went from a middling character that I liked a little who I loved as a villain, to my second favorite character on the show.

This last episode treated us to a rare moment that I've seen some suggest was desperately needed - more interactions with the Mane Six other than Twilight. Yet, now you are the third person that suggested they are overusing her.

No, not really. Outside of the two-parters she was barely even present in Season 6, she was in like...What, 4 episodes? The rest of it she was completely absent. We've had 4 episodes this season and so far she's been in three of them. Good, maybe they're going to incorporate her more naturally throughout the rest of the season instead of her only showing up every once and a while.

I could understand this complaint if she had consistently been shoved into Season 6 in every episode, but she really wasn't. There have been plenty of episodes without her still, episode 3 already didn't have her in it as it is, and I imagine there'll be plenty more episodes in the future without her.

Thematically it makes more sense for it to be Starlight. What common thread exists with Starlight that doesn't with most other characters? What has see been able to do rather quickly that other characters have struggled with?

Well, the mane 6 are like showing up almost every episode. Why can't Starlight. She is going to be more important in the show. No denying that.

Actually... if anything I feel they are using MUCH better in this season than in the previous one (and this comes from someone who actually liked her in s6). I feel Songco and LEWIS are better in developing the character than Haber. I wondering where this will lead now.

This.

Last year, Starlight wasn't given any opportunity to bond with others. In a season where DHX is supposed to add another wheel to the mane cast, leaving her out for nearly the entire second half was a major misstep to her growth, and it showed in the finale. So far, Starlight's actually given time to bond with others. The more she bonds with others, the more she grows, and the more real her redemption feels.

I do feel the writers have been pushing her on us since season 6 and with this most recent episode it feels more forced then ever. To be honest I think it would be far more interesting to watch a episode with a new pony in it. Instead of twilight 2.0 popping up and me guessing the plot of the episode from there. It it what has made the last few seasons boring for me.

Not yet she isn't. If she is going to be a member of the cast, then she needs to feel like it to me.. and right now, she is starting to. My biggest complaint about Starlight is that she just felt like she was just there, Twilight's shadow... no character of her own.... but she is slowing coming out of that and becoming her own character... no Twilight necessary.  If she is going to be in the show, then I want her to feel the same as the other mane 6... like a member of the cast. That means interacting with them, and popping up as they do in the episodes. This is only episode 4... still a ton of time to get the others in there with some screen time.

I don't know.... She's becoming new but different Twilight... Can't tell for sure. I want to see where this will be going, honestly. If they try to push her in the wrong direction, I'd be disappointed, really.

no, she's Twilight 2.0, what with her op magic, anxiety attacks, and hesitancy to (originally) make friends.

Well, she has the potential to become Twilight, who is also her teacher and idol (sort of) :orly:

Not really.

Outside of premieres and finales, during the course of season 6, she barely appeared at all, making it feel like she didn't exist outside of episodes specifically about her.

Having Starlight interacts with others such as Maud and even Pinkie (which is was nice to have her interact with one of the mane 6 outside of Twilight for a change) in an episode that she isn't the main focus, was something that was really needed for quite a while.

They're saying "LOVE THIS CHARACTER!" without telling or showing us WHY we should love her

That downward spiral started when they showed her "redemption" arc in a song montage, which does nothing to show she's changed into a better pony

I feel she is forced the same goes with Maud Pie I would prefer to get to know the other Pie members not Maud everybody already knows maud and starlight are op characters they are unbeatable they have showed it time and time again I feel its best they become background characters instead of main characters due to its a repeat of the same thing  and this new episode made them both look like jerks I know Pinkie is sometimes overbearing, but she only wanted to be a part of it and keep her sister in Ponyville with her,but both Maud and Starlight were quick to blame her for the cause of Maud leaving and then not want to spend any time with her neither of them told her Maud tried, but she let it go instead of talking to her and starlight completely just said she ruined their friendship when all she wanted to do was help her sister make a friend and keep her in Ponyville I mean they left her out of everything pretty much instead of asking her to join them or explain to her that they want to get to know each other and if she could kindly give them that time, but instead they blamed her and made her feel so guilty I don't think that's a good lesson at all  I feel their personalities are just boring and typical I get tired of seeing them in episodes I want to get to know Pinkie's other sisters and some new characters that could be possibly introduced not more episodes on the 2 op characters.

On a side note I don't think her character changed at all she is still op and she still has her obsession to control things to make it her way and she still has difficulty making friends.

Now I know some well a lot of people are going to disagree with me, but this is my opinion and I don't want an argument started over colorful ponies this is my opinion if you agree that's fine and if you disagree that's fine as well.

Maybe wait until after the season so we can actually better evaluate the number of appearances. They rarely actually care about the order of episodes characters appear in. Like how season 6 was pretty Rarity heavy in the first half.

As long as she never again becomes relevant to the overarching plot I'm somewhat okay since her slice episodes can be watch and forget sorta thing. I do that with Maud episodes anyway. That said, what I am not okay with is Mane 6 stagnation/retardation. Some think that Mane 6 have reached their peak. Why, they have never been there in the first place. In fact, something is deliberately preventing progression that could invigorate their stories. Oh, whatever shall we do?
