That's not usually a good sign; when films aren't screened in advanced for critics it usually means the studio fears the film won't do very well...Thanks anyway.

it is being shown early for critics

they just can't report on it yet. Aside from a few I suppose.

OK. I don't think the film will be reviewed badly or anything; I'm expecting around 68% on Rotten Tomatoes, similar to the first SpongeBob movie (it would be 96% if it was just the fans reviewing it, tho hahaha).

We can always hope for a sleeper hit. Some of them might not open strong, but sheer word of mouth could turn it around. Check this out and see which movies blew expectations away: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SleeperHit

I think the movie is going to do pretty well

  • Marketing has been really strong in the past few weeks
  • Bronies
  • Early reviews are very positive
  • There is basically no competition in the family movie department
  • There are no major blockbuster movies this weekend (even Bladerunner)
  • Bronies
  • Decent cast of well respected actors
  • Extremely popular brand that adults will recognize from their childhoold
  • Bronies
  • Brohoof 1

I know I have been soft on expectations of the film, but @Ryanmahaffe has a point that there is no competition since Blade Runner (which critics are raving about) is targeted to a different audience. Ninjago didn't have the opening or the legs anyone expected ... and the early buzz on our film is positive.

As an aside, this fandom has had some contraction in the last few years. We are no longer a curiosity. This is a great opportunity to tell not just Hasbro, but Sony (who doubted our existence) and Lionsgate (who refused to allow fan related screenings sanctioned my movie theaters) that the adult fandom still matters. If enough show up that first weekend it will be seen when the sales reporting comes out and we can stand up with pride and say we are a viable mover for the franchise still.

Get out there and see this thing. :D

Why anyone would doubt bronies are a thing is beyond me.

I guess Sony thought Emojis would be better to bank on.

Unless ponies pulls a fast one they bet right... since Emojis has been a gold mine for them if you count worldwide release, no matter how terrible the film is. Really hoping MLP trumps it, since if it does not, this sends a very clear message to filmmakers the movie going audience prefers films like TEM over MLP.

*shudders*

It's done alright, considering the budget.

I don't really see any signs of the mlp movie flopping

Advertising has been strong in the last month ish, far more TV ads, far more youtube ads, Americas got Talent trailer, little to no competition, ect, etc.

Why end the embargo Thursday? I get the feeling glowing reviews would make all the difference toward the film's success, more so than your average film. I've only really seen it happen this short notice toward "The Emoji Movie", and I figured that was only because Sony knew people were going to hate it so they went out of their way to make sure they didn't interfere with that film's potential profit.

I don't know, I just really want this film to be as successful as possible, and I fear the lack of reviews (which influence a lot of moviegoers) could significantly hurt how well it fares.

I don't mean to single you out or anything, but I just feel kind of weird seeing arguments like these to go pay to see the movie, because for me, many of the common arguments like this are a little demotivational, if anything. I guess that, in watching and commenting on this show over the years, I haven't felt any need to prove anything about the power of the adult fanbase, nor to make a statement on masculinity in modern society or anything like that. I've never been a proselytizer or active defender of the merits of the show to others. I probably wouldn't be a good candidate for those interviews I've seen where journalists ask attendees at brony conventions what makes MLP:FiM special and why there's such a dedicated adult fanbase.

A related argument to this is that we all should want the movie to do well because that will lead to a revival of the popularity of the show and a big influx of new fans. I'm doubtful that that will happen, and that's not necessarily something that I would really want. I've also seen people (probably more over on Equestria Daily) saying that we should support the movie (even regardless of how good the movie itself actually is) because if the movie does well, then the show will continue to Season 10 and beyond! But again, what if that's not necessarily something I want to see happen? Should I deliberately not support the movie then? It seems like many people saying things like that think that the show is absolutely amazing and just keeps getting better, which is not a view to which I subscribe.

I do plan on going out and paying to see the movie, but my motivation will probably be more just to keep up with the franchise personally and be able to understand and participate in any discussions involving the movie down the road. So I don't know, I just wanted to give the perspective of someone who isn't inspired to pay to see the movie by many of the common arguments being made for it.

You misunderstood my post then. It had nothing to do with proselytizing to the general audience or potential fans (I'm against that in general). Someone makes a product, consumer group that already enjoys said product uses the power of the purse to ensure narrowly developed business paradigms and strategies are reconsidered for future developed projects. I think in business and marketing, its kinda what I do.
