I just wasn't sure if you meant this last batch or the prior batch. To be honest, how they are rolling out Equestria Girls stuff these days, plus the leaks ... I honestly get confused on what is new in that particular part of the IP

... and the upcoming plans on the YouTube series may mean those context concerns you raised could still be valid.

The specials, the summertime shorts, and the YouTube series are all within six months of each other. It's a bit much, in my opinion, but I was operating on the idea that the writers are actively trying to pretend Equestria Girls never had anything to do with Friendship is Magic, which clearly isn't true.

The context concerns have much more to do with what people may have watched than anything else. I don't know for sure, but I strongly suspect there's a large portion of FiM's audience who doesn't know or care who Sunset is. Then again, that's never stopped the show before.

I'm not really a fan of EqG and haven't watched the shorts or anything for context on its current direction, but I think you could get away with a cameo or two without worrying too much about viewers who haven't seen both the show and the movies.

For example, if you wanted to pull together a team of Celestia's best pupils for some reason for fun, you could easily reintroduce her along with exposition for a couple of other former star pupils. With all the magic that's been done over the series, beaming in from a vaguely described other world portal would hardly cause anyone not in the know to bat an eye, especially if you juxtaposed with other equally outlandish character stories.

Just saying, there's options available to creative writers.

I agree. They could just show Sunset coming out of the portal for a visit to Equestria and not show the human universe if they don't want to.

As for Sunset being unfamiliar to people who haven't seen Equestria Girls, I don't really see the problem. They often introduce characters that are unfamiliar to everyone, and this hasn't been confusing to viewers. A good way to introduce Sunset to the rest of the audience would be to have a scene where she meets the rest of the Mane 6 (obviously excluding Twilight) for the first time. Maybe they could have Sunset commenting on how they remind her of a few of her friends... ;)

Or just letting her meet with Celestia where she asks how it's been in EQG.

If I don't understand something or Interpret it wrong, I'm dutch. Sometimes I gamble for meanings of the words. And sometimes I write the wrong words, like week and weak for example. Sorry for it already. :smug:

Discord, Twilight, Sunset, Fluttershy, Starlight, Rarity, Luna, Celestia, Big MCintosh, Cadence, Shining, Minuette, Lyra, Rara, Sweetie Belle, Cheerilee, Derpy, Spike.

Those were all one-offs, because (unless they took a major salary cut) all of those stars are expensive. I suspect Emily Blunt's paycheck would dwarf the entire main cast's combined, so even if she did take less money for a role on this show, it'd still be an expensive character to bring back. In other words: depends very much on how long the show lasts. Two or three seasons from now, maybe we could get a cameo.

As for Sunset: I think the context issue is more pronounced with her, because the Movie was a big event which will probably be seen by most of the target audience on TV reruns or on home media if not in theatres, whereas I'm not as convinced that Equestria Girls is widely known through that audience. There's even more likely to be a difference among older viewers who might be more discerning. And Hasbro seems weirdly interested in keeping the brands separate at this point, which is evidenced by how Equestria has had absolutely no references in recent Equestria Girls content.

But I can still dream, because I would be pretty happy to see Sunset in the show.

They say that voice acting is acting, but even as connected as they are, the wages you get from voiceover aren't a high as physical acting for live-action productions. Not even close. The celebs hired for the movie more than likely agreed to a major salary cut, and couldn't have made much more than the regulars who work on FIM itself. That would have inflated the budget to such an extreme that current ticket sales would have made it a box office flop, and according to Hasbro, it's far from it. Emily Blunt in particular was once the highest paid actress in the world. Offering the usual $16+ million to her alone would have been marketing suicide.

The context behind Sunset shouldn't be that problematic. Anyone who's just remotely familiar with EQG would only know her as a human. She's rarely ever seen as a pony, which is the form she would need to take if she wanted to visit Equestria. So while bringing her into FIM may be pure fan-service to fans of both series, for everyone else who only follows the show, it'd be like introducing a new character. I don't think anyone would object to her having a guest episode if it just focused on her finding the strength to meet Celestia again- the one pony she hurt the most. The fact Sunset ditched her and turned bad, and then had a change of heart after learning the value of friendship from Twilight, only needs to be told in summary.

In short, no human world references are needed. They didn't mention how the Sirens used some music competition to steal magic from a school body, so they definitely don't need to talk about Sunset trying to use a school dance to steal Twilight's crown, or how she helped save a camp from some desperate counselor abusing magical stones.

Well, I'm not saying never. Without knowing the budget, I'm still gonna suggest that she was relatively expensive to get a hold of, even if she didn't demand her usual salary, and she's also presumably very busy, so who knows if she'll make time for a cameo on a modestly successful children's cartoon in the near future. It could happen, but I get the feeling that the producers won't want to double dip with any of the movie's guest stars for a while longer. Most other celebrity guests have been one-off characters, after all.

The show certainly isn't afraid to explain characters through exposition in recent years, and this wouldn't be the first time a brand new character is said to have a past relationship with a protagonist. I still don't think it's likely to happen, but I hope it does, and "Mirror Magic" shows they haven't entirely given up on crossing the streams.
