I understand that he changed his mind at the end of the episode because the plot requires it, but man honestly, starswirl was such a jackass to twilight and completely cocky to her and everyone!!! like some selfish jerk!!! This was the actually entire basis of the finale but I mean, I think twilight deserves better from her idol! I cannot believe he was so rude to her

so ungrateful to me, his character is and was crappy in my opinion because he honestly seems like a cocky arrogant jackass who only believes in his own abilities even by the end

I haven’t seen it yet, but I’m pretty sure the notion that Starswirl was kind of a butt is not new. He may have been good at magic, but friendship, not so much. And I see a lot of specialists in different fields that are SUPER full of themselves. That ego and tunnel vision can get you far in perfecting your craft, but it won’t make you a good person.

You clearly weren't paying attention. Celestia DID say in Season 3 Finale when Twilight finished his unfinished spell that he Didn't understand Friendship as well as Twilight did! Plus, his fatal flaw was his pride! Something he acknowledged in the end! Cut the guy some slack for actually learning his lesson instead of not doing so like other jerks do.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I think part of it could be that he was mad at Twilight, but he was definitely a jerk on top of that. At least he got over it by the end?

I was thinking the same thing, but now I think it was because Twilight didn't think things through and acted on selfish reasons. The fact he didn't listened to Starswirl is the fact that he had his own believes on friendship and he didn't understand that. I agree with you he could have been less off a jerk like in the comics, but it is kind of realistic to me.

Can you really blame him? Twilight undermined his efforts to save the world. She did not think about the ramifications of her actions. If you had put all this effort into perfecting a spell that would put a dangerous threat into limbo, at the cost of your own freedom, only to wake up moments later and find out this important feat was undone by some fangirl wanting to meet you, you'd be pissed off at her too.

His arrogance was something that wouldn't bother me as much if the others didn't blindly follow him like they did. Eventually him being such an asshole should have made the others second guess his plan. Being the best wizard that ever lived doesn't put you above the ability to be reasonable.

Him being such a dick towards Twilight, that I actually think was done right. His anger was justified for what it was worth, but he did end up cooperating with her eventually. Now if only he was that reasonable to consider other options.

There's no other way around it. There was a reason why no one knew what had happened to him or any of the other Pillars. Starswirl took great pains to make sure that what happened was a secret so that their spell would not be undone. As we all know Twilight is inquisitive, and will go at great lengths if her curiosity and/or interests are piqued. Considering Starswirl is her idol it is conceivable that she would do what she could to get him back without realizing that bringing him back would bring back the Pony of Shadows as well.

He is perfectly justified in his attitude towards Twilight.

It is consistent with the show canon though. The whole reason he couldn't complete the spell that Twilight finished was because he didn't really understand or put stock in the "magic of friendship."

I would not be surprised if Twilight ends up teaching Starswirl next season.

Twilight does something that is reckless and could have harmed others, she had to reprimanded by Starswirl for going through with it. It does teach a lesson about think carefully before going through with it.

I was very disappointed to find out that Starswirl's behavior was mostly pridefulness and stubbornness, as I think that he would have given a better impression for his first-time in-person appearance on the show if he acted like the rest of the pillars by behaving himself.

Some people confuse talent with morality. You can be an absolute genius and a very bad person. In fact, it is this antisocial behavior that can lead some people to become obsessed with themselves and their own craft. Obsession and perfection are two sides of the same coin.
Perhaps, Starswirl wouldn't have been half as good a wizard if he had been a better pony/person. So, let him be a jerk, I would suggest.
