Denim&Venöm 18,738 February 14, 2018 Share February 14, 2018 Unless it was stated in the comics or the books, we've never been told how Celestia knew the elements would banish Luna for 1000 years, that the stars would aid in her escape or that it would be during the Summer sun celebration. So how did Celestia know about it?
Mirage 24,747 February 14, 2018 Share February 14, 2018 I'm not an MLP scholar, but I'm pretty sure it was Starswirl the Bearded that discovered/calculated that prophecy. “Remember that when you leave this earth, you can take with you nothing you have received--only what you have given.”

Mirage 24,747 February 14, 2018 Share February 14, 2018 Yes, that is true. But, someone had to know before it happened, otherwise Celestia wouldn't have been able to cast the spell? “Remember that when you leave this earth, you can take with you nothing you have received--only what you have given.”
ShootingStar159 2,155 February 15, 2018 Share February 15, 2018 The exact wording of the prophecy was that ‘the stars would aid in her escape,’ and we indeed see the stars moving close to the moon before we see NMM vanish and return. There are all kinds of possible answers for this. Maybe the stars have to be in a specific alignment, something that only happens every thousand years, maybe even have to the exact same moment as the time the banishing spell was cast. Maybe it was a spell that NMM, or even Celestia herself cast the moment they were banished, but it would take a thousand years to work. Or maybe Celestia knew it would take a thousand years for the Elements to regain their power, and cast the spell to free NMM as soon as she had a way to stop her again. Or she knew that as soon as the elements regained their power, the banishing spell would weaken enough for NMM to use the stars to escape. There’s lots of answers, but bottom line, it took an outside force, the stars, to free NMM, and that outside force was something that someone could influence and measure to allow the prophecy to be written. Prospekt 11,018 February 15, 2018 Share February 15, 2018 (edited) Perhaps NMM herself was able to cast a spell that would cause the stars to free her? Or... 2 hours ago, Nightmare Mirage said: I'm not an MLP scholar, but I'm pretty sure it was Starswirl the Bearded that discovered/calculated that prophecy. Starswirl knew all along through the use of some precognition spell that Luna would become corrupted and the stars, of their own free will (because these are clearly not real-world stars), would magically free her after 1000 years on the moon. Jeric 46,850 February 15, 2018 Share February 15, 2018 Celestial conjunctions are often used in story telling to herald some major event. The spell could have weakened due to the stellar phenomenon of the conjunction. I'm ignoring the physics that stars actually being in alignment is completely relative ... because two Alicorns raising the moon and sun allows for some suspension of disbelief when it comes to this topic. The curious question is why write it down?

From a world building point of view, cycles are important, and often the first things a writer outlines. What happens periodically? (holidays, astrology, etc) Prophecy is also another world building device to inspire motivation. Actions that fulfill something foretold lend to awe and fascination. It's also tends to be the crux of foreshadow in the fantasy genre. But I'm sure you already know that, and your question was more directed at the lack of information. Anyway, I thought of Starswirl because he's very often associated with the Elements of Harmony and the Two Sisters on a historical level (who else was involved?). But I believe the only reference is 'old books', that Twilight was reading, to learn of the prophecy. 1 “Remember that when you leave this earth, you can take with you nothing you have received--only what you have given.”

Jeric 46,850 February 15, 2018 Share February 15, 2018 Hm. Trying to tie in all the loose threads. Starswirl could have had a vision of the prophecy with no direct knowledge that it would be Luna and warned Celestia. Then Limbo. Then Nightmare Moon battle happens and Celestia uses a banishment spell that has a built in countdown timer. The banishment ends the Princesses connection to the Elements. Celestia writes the prophecy down and casts an anti-aging spell on herself to ensure she is around for 1000 years. When the time starts to come she looks for that Pony who could reunite the Elements and seeds the knowledge of the Prophecy so that it can happen organically ... cause reasons? Also Luna is redeemed and Celestia goes ... "So sister .... check out this anti-aging spell I have!"

And since the EoH seem to (rather conveniently) have their own awareness and intelligence, it would be possible to banish without invoking a spell. Kinda dubious on Celestia's part if that be the case though. “Remember that when you leave this earth, you can take with you nothing you have received--only what you have given.”

GiFTGewEhrSCHutzen-4 8,828 February 18, 2018 Share February 18, 2018 Just a guess. Could be the blast spell of the EOH that Celestia made to seal Nightmare Moon and trap her there (moon) has a duration, which is 1,000 years. Which explains how she got free. Tenebrae 14 May 30, 2018 Share May 30, 2018 I just wonder why the EoH didn't purify Nightmare Moon the first time around. Is it because Celestia was not a true wielder of the Elements and so their full power was diminished?

Remember that it took BOTH sisters to use the Elements on Discord, so when Luna became NNM, the Elements couldn't used to their full power and could only put NNM in the Moon so she couldn't take over. Once the Elements had new Bearers in the Mane 6, they could be used to restore her. As in she used them specifically to cast the banishing spell, not to purify her. It's possible she didn't even think she could purify her sister. But again, it could of easily been the fact that it was just her. As for Starswirl being the prediction maker. It is possible... you never know. Not to mention the prediction didn't even refer to Nightmare moon by name... But the "mare in the moon". But I'm more under the assumption it was someone else rather than Starswril… but wouldn't bother me if I was wrong. On 2/15/2018 at 7:07 AM, Jeric said: Also Luna is redeemed and Celestia goes ... I mean yeah we see them old and what not, but we don't know how long it took them to get to those ages. So 1000 years could be in the time frame of an adult pony. If not, it could also vary well be a side effect of being an Alicorn.

So I find it odd that Celestia could use all 6 together. I guess the most logical conclusion is that both Celestia and Luna were connected to all 6 elements but needed to use them together in order to use the elements at full power. But then why are the elements no longer connected to Celestia and Luna? Is it simply because they are now tied to the new element bearers?

That's assuming they were even connected to them in the first place. Honestly, I think they were just being used by them, not because they were connected to them. They didn't change shapes when they collected them, not to mention they had to as it seemed, force the elements out of the tree of harmony.
