movies/tv Disney buyout of 21st Century Fox is approved

The Department of Justice has approved the Walt Disney Company's proposed purchase of 21st Century Fox properties on the condition that the company divests Fox-owned regional sports networks (RSNs).

That's bad news for Comcast, which has been trying to outbid Disney for the Fox properties. Fox is reluctant to sell to Comcast because of concerns about obtaining regulatory approval of such a deal. The DOJ's approval of the Disney/Fox deal gives Fox another reason to reject any further bids from Comcast.

Technically, the DOJ filed a court complaint to block the Disney/Fox merger today. But the agency also filed a proposed final judgment that would let the merger proceed if Disney agrees to the DOJ's conditions. That's standard procedure for when the DOJ wants to impose conditions on a merger but doesn't intend to block it entirely.

Disney has already said it is willing to divest the RSNs in order to complete the merger. The DOJ's court filings were made in US District Court for the Southern District of New York.

"American consumers have benefitted from head-to-head competition between Disney and Fox's cable sports programming that ultimately has prevented cable television subscription prices from rising even higher," DOJ antitrust chief Makan Delrahim said in an announcement. "Today's settlement will ensure that sports programming competition is preserved in the local markets where Disney and Fox compete for cable and satellite distribution."

Within 90 days of buying Fox, Disney would be required to sell all 22 Fox RSNs "to one or more Acquirers acceptable to the United States [government]," a DOJ filing said.

You can read more about it at: https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2018/06/trump-administration-approves-potential-disneyfox-merger/

So basically, Disney now owns the rights to everything Fox related minus Sports and Fox News.   The good news: X-Men, Fantastic Four and Deadpool are now apart of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  The Bad news, the Simpsons and Family Guy now operate under the House of Mouse.

And please let's not make any Disney will bring doom to it posts. It's way too soon to tell if the direction goes in a good way or a bad way.

I've been seeing Disney extend their hands to more and more on the market. Major companies et caetera. Wondering where is this heading by now, really.

On the one hand, I will finally be able to see Dr. Doom in the MCU. On the other, Disney is beginning to feel like the person who is winning at Monopoly by such a wide margin that it just isn't fun for anyone else. Not to naively spit on success or anything, but it raises concerns in people for a good reason. We'll see what happens. I'm just happy about the prospect of seeing Doom's story arcs in the MCU.

This is a bad move. Disney keeps absorbing smaller movie studios, they'll start becoming a monopoly. They're becoming the EA of the film industry.

Like I said, it's too soon to say that. Disney hasn't even done anything with its new property yet.

They already own Marvel and Lucasfilm. If they own Fox now, they could very well absorb other studios.

And I heard Marvel been doing good. Plus Disney gave control to Lucasfilms to make changes to the Star Wars stuff. So any of the "bad moves" that Star Wars have made is because of Lucasfilms.

Like I always say, if the company makes a bad move, put the blame on the SPECIFIC people who made the decisions and not on EVERYONE who works for the company.

I'd like to see him team up with an evil Tony Stark.

As Disney is still making quality product and has stepped up their game AFTER all their acquired properties, I have no reason to suspect that this positive will somehow change. Many of their brands are run by a central person, so Disney has learned to allow creativiy to breathe. MCU basically runs on its own, Kennedy manages SW. I'm sure they will do the same for some of the larger Fox properties.

Heck even their TV unit is making some quality shows with Disney allowing some surprising creating control to the showrunners.

If I finally get a good FF film that isn't made by Pixar, I'm calling this a win.

allowing creative control is the key to a good company.

FF? What's that?

So bad. I mean, I could wear cosplay and run around having my kids shoot it on their phones and it would be better than the last one.

So bad. So very very bad.

Guess the days to kickstart a superhero career as a Human Torch in a Failtastic 4 only to land a better role in the MCU are over :dash:

First of all, the merger needs to be completed before anything can truly happen. This means that Disney must fulfill its end of the bargain otherwise they could lose out and everything will go back to the way it was before.

I feel like Disney is starting to get really big now, like they keep expanding and expanding into other areas of the entertainment industry, I mean, I'm not saying I'm against this merger or anything, but it's still good to have a least a little diversity when it comes to movie studios and production companies.

Honestly the only part I really care about is Fox News, and it sounds like that won't be changing, so that's good, I need my Fox news :D

Well this might not be the most ideal merger, especially given how large Disney is, however given that the only other company that would have bought out Fox was Comcast, I am willing to accept this as the lesser of two evils.

Also, this means we might finally be able to see a decent Fantastic 4 movie for once.
