movies/tv Planets from the past Star Wars Movies absent in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi

Yes and no. The Galaxy is a large place, there's still so much to see, and yet we want some familiarity and references to the past. The Clone Wars TV series did this well by having a combination of regular settings and planets in addition to new frontiers.

When taking over the reins of a vastly popular franchise as Star Wars, and producing the first sequels in years, it's advisable to throw the fans a bone my referencing some familiar locations from the originals. The galaxy may be vast, but it's just good film making and common sense to give the fans a nod once in a while. With the feature films, Disney has been meticulous in purging all remnants of the old Star Wars and reinventing it in their own image (even when that image is a watered-down ripoff of what had come before). This has not worked out well, but as we all know by now, Disney has no interest in anything but their own ego, and a lot of the fans are getting fed up.

Why? Isn't it better to explore new and interesting places rather than revisit the same old stuff because nostalgia-bait?

I don't mind it really, I want SW to explore more instead of reusing the same planet(s) over and over again.

You say that like Tatooine shouldn't show up again.

I don't think it should. Movie franchises shouldn't focus on the past, they should create new things. If I'm so desperate to see Tatooine or Hoth or whatever planet, I can just rewatch the first trilogy.

Where's the fun in it not appearing in a sequel?

As someone who adores TLJ and puts it as fourth on the list (almost tied with RotJ) I’m one of the many fans that is completely fine with LSG’s work. Rebels was breathtaking, TLJ was ballsy and gorgeously thematic, and the comics and books have done a phenomenal job in fixing many of the convoluted story that the EU created post Vong.

At least I stopped seeing arm chair physicists get it completely wrong when they critiqued the science behind several scenes that were 100% backed by science (bombs, Leia using the force, ships appearing to slow, etc).

I’m fine with a lack of old planets being directly referenced or seen. I have a feeling that the Jakku observatory is going to play a huge part in IX, and I wouldn’t be shocked to see Mustafar come back for a second time.

Because then we can focus that time on something new and exciting. Where's thr fun in movies constantly revisiting the same places just because nostalgia bait?

To try to give the idea a tiny bit of credit what do you feel about the need to at least mention it? I agree we should explore new unseen places. But if there is trouble I also sorta feel like they might at least need to mention in passing the seat of galactic government. Sorta how whenever there is a disaster both state and federal politicians get involved in the us. But eh that could feel tired or forced. What's your thoughts on that cause I am 50/50

Because we like them. Besides, when you say nostalgia bait, what do you mean?

But we might like the new planets even more.

Revisiting old planets purely because the old fans have a nostalic connection to them rather than to tell the story the writers want to tell.

Well, considering the entire Republic was destroyed by Starkiller Base, it doesn't surprise me. Also Coruscant briefly appeared in The Force Awakens, in the part where politicians were gazing at the lazar beam about to hit them from Starkiller Base.

I don't think that was Coruscant.

I find no issues with that considering how big the galaxy is and how Episode VII and episode VIII were built. There wasn't really much room for travelling and ham-fisting planets like Tatooine etc would feel forced. Starkiller destroying a world like Coruscant would be overkill thing to do (contrary to popular belief it wasn't Coruscant that got destroyed, neither was that system attacked)

My only issue with planets in sequels was how... average in design they were. They really did not stand out much, it lacked worlds like Bespin, Dagobah or Felucia for starters - worlds that really felt vastly different from what earth is like. The only exception would be Crait, which also was... rather simple in its design.

Have you found it strange that planets from the Star Wars original trilogy and prequel trilogy haven't appeared in The Force Awakens and the Last Jedi?

It makes sense to me that they wanted new planets in the sequels. You wouldn't know it from just watching the movies, but it's canon that Starkiller Base was built from the planet Illum that appeared in the old expanded universe. It was a natural source of Kyber crystals that are used not only in lightsabers, but also in superlaser weapons. So that was a cool reference to old Star Wars lore. If you watch the old Clone Wars cartoon series from 2003-2004, you get to see Barriss Offee build her lightsaber in the sacred caves of Illum, right as Separatist droids infiltrate them.

Manwhile, they decided to put Jakku in the sequel trilogy, which is literally just Tatooine with a bit of Star Destroyer wreckage. It's even out of the way just like Tatooine is... otherwise, Rey wouldn't have been left there as a child. Pretty boring if you ask me, but I guess it makes sense because otherwise it'd be hard to believe that Rey wasn't discovered.

Ahch-To is barely shown apart from the island of the first Jedi temple. It looks like it's just a water world with little islands. Not very exciting.

The Rise of Skywalker is the same way with old planets. Several of them do appear, but don't see them for very long. Bespin shows up in a brief clip of a damaged Star Destroyer that has fallen out of orbit. The old forest moon of Endor appears as another Star Destroyer is torn apart by the Holdo maneuver (and part of the movie takes place on an ocean moon of Endor that we've never seen before). Tatooine appears at the end of the movie when Rey goes to the old Lars moisture farm. Mustafar appears at the beginning of the movie, and it's a pretty random planet from the prequels (and a few moments in Rogue One) to appear again outside of animated series or comics. It only does because that's where Kylo Ren goes to find a Sith wayfinder.

So, @Jeric was right about Mustafar :P
