I'm not really a fan of this episode and the growing up without a parent/sibling noticing was better done previously

First off I know this is going to be an unpopular opinion (stop giving me those teary eyes Scootaloo) but I honestly feel like she might have been better off an orphan rather than with these parents.

1) Her dad just lets an aggressive cragodile wander about town and attack/terrify a school house.

2) They didn't even broach the idea to their daughter about uprooting her from the town where she's lived her entire life before showing up saying "We're going to a remote island, you have the weekend to say goodbye to your friends, cancel any plans you had for the future and pack." Seriously one weekend and no idea of if she had any plans for the next month or so?

3) His just dismissing their cutie marks as meaning they'll always be friends? Seriously this is a magical brand showing a ponies special talent and purpose in life and he just dismisses it that casually?

4) Scootaloo loves her parents but she's obviously internalized the idea their job is more important than she is which is not a good thing.

5) The fact that even though they're obviously getting letters they read a lot they have no real idea of what's going on in their daughters life and yet still make decisions like this for her.

I get they love her and the crusaders ages are iffy but really they're old enough to have found their purposes in life (not just found it but being doing it well enough they have parents coming to them for help with their foals), its obviously linked with the 3 of them, they've done it well enough for word to reach Griffonstone (an entire other country), Applejack wasn't that much older when she was arguing with Big Mac about running the farm . . . I could go on but they just they don't feel like good parents. This isn't about travel or broadening their daughters horizons (she's been to the crystal empire, manehattan, Mt Eris, Canterlot, was a flower filly at a princesses wedding, represented Equestria at the games.) its about not being involved or having any real understanding about her and yet still making massive, life altering decisions without talking to her or even giving her time to try and come to terms with the idea. This after leaving her ALONE for who know's how much of her life and dismissing her special purpose as a club.

A few other points . . .

1) Accent, why an Australian accent instead of the normal pony one?

2) Wait the aunt's are leaving? The cakes will be staying with Scootaloo, then Rarity, then Dash?? Rainbow Dash sure she's practically adopted Scootaloo, maybe Rarity as he sisters a close friend but the Cakes? Why are the town bakers looking after a filly they have no relationship to even as friends and how long as this been going on? I mean the aunt's have just left with a see you next week is Scootaloo just getting passed round the town for ponies to foalsit???

3) Given the recentish episode with the washouts I do wonder how Dash is feeling at having the Crusaders burst into tears when she shows up with wonderbolt tickets?

4) In relation to the above what if Dash hadn't had those tickets, would the Crusaders have just spent the weekend crying before Scootaloo left?

4) Ok so the parents know all about timberwolves and the like but surely there are other odd creatures and plants in the forest (we know no one knew how to cure the one that reproduced by turning ponies into it) and how about the flying pig or the living apples?

5) That sold sign is surprisingly easy to read.

6) Did Ponyville just create a local holiday to appreciate the Crusaders that will be celebrated annually?

7) I liked Diamond waving to the Crusaders on the stage.

  1. @FlareGun45apartment and parents, but San Fran wasn’t actually home. Minnesota was. Riley turned into a completely different person. Ponyville is Scoot’s home, not Shire Lanka. Even though she’d be much closer with her parents, she’d be far away without her other family: her friends in Ponyville. She’d have to restart her life with new school, friends, and surroundings. There’s a huge air of uncertainty. If you want a looser comparison, Harry Potter lived with the Dursley’s, but Hogwarts was his home.

One thing I want to point out here is the assumption that there will be new friends. We don't know much about Shire Lanka except that its apparently got a "permanent" job for Scootaloo's parents who study rare plants and animals and since its in the middle of the ocean its unlikley that train goes straight there. More likely its similar to Mt Eris where the train goes to a nearby shore then a boat takes them the rest of the way. It could easily be something like Umi no Misaki with 15 children total ranging from little kids to near adults or like Nim's island with only Scootaloo and her parents living there.

It’s in reference to the late Steve Irwin. Since Holiday’s his sister, she has one, too.

The aunts didn't technically live in Ponyville, and with Scoot’s parents having to work on life-saving quests abroad, someone Scoot knows very well would be best to rotate overnight guardianship. The Cakes are also very trustworthy and reliable caretakers for their own kids.

You know on thinking about that sold sign some more it means one of three things.

1) Lofty and Holiday managed to buy the nieces home without realizing what they were purchasing or telling her.

2) The Ponyville housing market is so busy a place can be listed, moved out of and sold within 3-4 day's.

3) Scootaloo's parents were in the process of selling her home out from under her without telling her. Even if they were confident she'd move to Shire Lanka with them what happens if the buyer showed up and told their daughter "Oh hi filly I'm just inspecting the house I'm buying." How do they think she'd react to that?

Even so it feels out of place to me this isn't tied in to anything else. Its not some visting guest pony or the like its the father and aunt of a main character who has no traces of said accent. Which admitedly does make sense considering they've apparently just been leaving her in the care of strangers her entire life.

I get the need for some adult supervision its just why the cakes don't think of them as the loving, responsable adults we know them to be from the show think of them in regards to their relationship to Scootaloo. They are looking after the friend of the sister of a friend of their live in employee when they have 2 younger foals of their own.  Unless there's some offscreen relationship between them and Scootaloo's family (such as Holiday being Mrs Cake's sister) why are they taking care of her? It just feels to me like no one in Scootaloo's immediate family really cares (in the sense of bandaging her when she falls or reading her to bed at night) for her. Sure we get shown hugs and tears and praise but the simple fact is her parents have not been around for long enough she gets distracted in school at the idea of a visit and her aunts are happy leaving her in the care of the employee's of a friend of a sister of a friend of hers, the sister of a friend (not I note Sweetie's parents) and an adoptive big sister while they vanish off to another town till next week. Sure they don't have to give up their lives for a niece but how long has this rotating care giver been going on for Scootaloo? Why is she living in Ponyville when its obviously not her parents home (they're always travelling the world) or her aunts home (they live elsewhere). When did her parents buy this house to leave their filly in and has this been her entire life to this point (It would explain a lot about her attitude)?

It also ties into the Crusader age issue are they young enough to have show and tell in school or are they old enough to be effecitvely running their own job and in one case living alone for all intents and purposes.

I think the characters are what's going to keep this episode in high spirits for me. I always fall on my enjoyment of characters first before anything, even a confused or unrealistic moral will not bother me as long as the characters are great (I mean there's a reason I'm favorable to Starlight eps :yeahno:).

But speaking of characters........could we have at least had Diamond Tiara give part of the speech, I mean she's the reason they're together and that they earned they're cutie marks for crying out loud. Please, Chantal, couldn't you have recorded just a few lines?

*Sigh* Oh well beggars can't be choosers, and I ain't a show runner. The little wave was adorable though!

I found this to be a very strong conclusion to the CMC arc, and in the context of the show I didn't find the ending to be unrealistic. Afterall, Scootaloo was already living without her parents for years, it's not the same as most instances were kids are forced to move because of their parent's job. The most confusing thing there was not that they all made it work in the end, but why the Aunts didn't move earlier! That whole arrangement was kinda screwy. However, I am in the party that believes it would have been better if Scootaloo did move away in the end. I knew they would never actually do it, but they could have, it's the final season so they don't need to maintain status quo! While her parent's had rushed everything and really should have told Scootaloo about their plans earlier, they did make some really good points despite being the antagonists in the episode, and we could have gotten a good moral about the CMC enduring despite being separated geographically. Instead, we are given a completely unrelatable conclusion to an otherwise relatable conflict (I personally have been transplanted due to a job change much further than Scootaloo would have been, being able to visit once a month is almost laughably fortunate). As some other people have pointed out, the moral for this episode may actually be harmful, as it justifies tantrums, which is a shame because in the context of the episode it actually worked, it just doesn't generalize well. Then there was the part where Scootaloo said her parents were forcing her to choose between her friends and family, but they weren't: they never gave her a choice, and Scootaloo never had to make a choice because she decided instantly that she would rather stay in Ponyville. She never even considered the possibility that they could make things work with her moving, and they could have. People do. There was a lot I liked about this episode, but I'm really disappointed that they didn't take the risk.

11 hours ago, Jeric said:

Several reasons. First, try and put yourself in the frame of mind of an organic thought process and chain of events. Scootaloo sees Dash's parents. Sees how crazy supportive they are and how involved they were. At this time one would likely be thinking of their own parents as there may be a longing tied specifically to parents sinces it's one-to-one. Then Scootaloo sees how Dash reacts and that longing specific to Scootaloo's parents is what would be in the front of her thoughts. When she finally says the line, it makes more sense for her to connect the issues with her parents not being around much to how Dash was behaving. From a technical standpoint, because this is fiction and mechanics should be accounted for, a line that offers crazy specificity like that would be clunky and confusing to the audience. Besides we can infer that she is talking about her parents from the fact that Scootaloo omits every character in Ponyville that showed her support.

Basically, the reason Scootaloo did mention her Aunts is because that isn't how normally people talk in a moment like that.

One thing I got to mention since no one else did is that this episode implied it's because her aunts don't actually live in Ponyville so they were limited in how supportive they could be, but yeah, your explanation is better.

More like the opposite. Scootaloo's well-liked in Ponyville, and so are her parents, Holiday, and Lofty. Yes, she's way more mature, but she's still a kid. Leaving her to sleep alone is incredibly irresponsible; someone they all trust must be her overnight guardian. The Cakes, Dash, and Rarity agreed to share turns that week.

That is one of the strongest elements to me. The nods to their past involvement with the town and beyond was the best part of the episode. Occasionally I over rate an episode due to my biases and experiences, so I am likely undervaluing this one because the parents decisions are so different than what I would do that it actually drives me a little crazy. This is probably the most divided I have felt over an episode personally. I'm obviously going to give it a rewatch after I mull it over.

This element of the episode made me smile because they all had a plan to care for Scoots. I loved how the town chipped in to make sure she was safe.

The kid finally got his cutie mark. Well done, even i dont know what your job will be...:sealed:

Aw, those aunts people are talking about. I dont see anything that people make a fuss about.

So where the parents?

*Scootaloo is so exciting about her parents*

At least she didnt scream for minutes like what she did in Parental Glideance because she is  screaming from THE INSIDE.:ph3ar:

When Snip doubt Scootaloo's story about how cool her parents are (include me), they just show off as cool as possible...

So Scootaloo has the best parents?!?!

*fanboy screammmmmm*

Aw, Scootaloo got her parents now. No need for RD and her parents, i guess.

Oh no, Scootaloo has to live somewhere far away. Will it be the last Scootaloo episode?

The crying scene is just comical and ... cute... I'm trying to take their problems seriously, promise!:sealed:

Here come RD to the rescue...

...Bye, RD. Thanks for the ticket!

The CMC try to trick the parents to make them work in Ponyville. How could it possible go wrong?

By a way, i like Scootaloo' mom design, damn i forgot her name. Back to the episode!

Well, it's nice to see (at least on this site) the biggest controversy isn't over Scootaloo's aunts, but is over how the episode ended. Coolness.

I liked the episode well enough, I suppose, but I'm not sure I'm on board with Mane and Snap being all that great as parents. I'll have to see the episode again to be sure, but my impression was they haven't seen their daughter in years and she knows about their adventures only because they write each other often? And the deciding factor for them to be together with her was only because the return of Sombra made them concerned?

They sound like derelict parents to me. <_<

Mind you, they seem nice, they do love their daughter, and the episode does a nice job of sugar-coating them by basing them on real-life positive role models. But they also seem incredibly thoughtless. As someone who's parents went well out of their way to put their kids' lives first and someone who - while not having any kids of his own - dotes on his cats (aka proxy children) to no end, it seems like they could have put a lot more effort in to be with Scootaloo than they did.

They have excuses - it's very important scientific work, no one else has the experience to do it. But somehow I get the feeling a big factor in them deciding to continue with the arrangement that had been going on for years was because they simply got a lot of pleasure out of what they did, and not that it was making Pony civilization better. If it were me, I don't think I could put any kind of work ahead of raising kids. I mean, I guess if their excuse had been they needed to do this to raise enough money to put Scootaloo through college, then they might have a point. But any such decision should involve the child, and it doesn't seem like they gave Scootaloo a choice between them doing their job or raising her.

Then they make it worse by by dropping a bombshell that she's coming with them on their new assignment - whisking her away from her life and friends and everything she knows just so they can finally be together as a family - and again fail to involve her in this decision until it's too late to discuss. The time to discuss it was when they first got the job offer in Shire Lanka, not after they came back to Ponyville.

I've seen some comments on FimFiction that Spoiled Rich is actually a better parent than Mane and Snap, and there could be a scintilla of truth to that. Yes, Spoiled is an absolutely terrible person/pony, but she does seem to be involved in her daughter's life, and does want to share her own insights to help make Diamond a better pony. Or at least her vision of what a better pony is. Of course, it's also possible Spoiled is just trying to live vicariously through her daughter, in which case she really is the worse parent. But "CotLM" didn't have enough time to explore Spoiled's character to that depth and we didn't get to see her until then to know the answer to those questions.

As for how the episode ended, like others, I'm torn. It doesn't make sense for them to swoop in and tear her away from the only life she's known just because they're afraid she's going to end up as some mind-controlled minion of an undead Sombra. But for selfish reasons of my own, I always go for the most feels, and the most feels would have been to have Scootaloo go through this change. And I agree that would have been more realistic and the better lesson for kids going through the same ordeal. But because of the way the parents' needs are presented early in the episode, I'm not sure this would have been very satisfying, either.

Anyway, the resolution to the problem was heartwarming, and seeing the cameos of many of the characters the CMC had helped over the course of this series was a great way to put a cap on their exploits.

Oh yes. And wyverns apparently exist. Someone should inform the dragons. :)

*finished watching*

I have nothing funny to say about the last half of the episode but the last scene is really heartwarming. All ponies (include a griffin) that connects to CMC throughout the series are gathered here in the same screen, even Babs Seed was there. It would be better if every single one can talk about CMC has done to them, like Diamond Tiara or Babs Seed, who had no talking role even now but they dont have much time left so yeah, at least I saw Diamond Tiara waving to the CMC...

This ep could be a nice conclusion to CMC story arc but i have to say it's not the best. I just expected something more dramatically because nothing is really changed, It didnt have the impact that Crusader of the Lost Mark did. Until now, there was none CMC episode can beat Lost Mark. Last Crusade could be the only best ep to challenge Lost Mark but too bad, Lost Mark has much more epic conclusion and bigger impact to the show.

This ep is good, i like it. I give it an 8/10. Scootalove for the wins.:yay:

I need to watch this ep several times to find out what i missed. It's my first watch afterall.

Something about the parents bother me...

My point is why the cakes. What reason do they have to take care of her? I'm not concerned about Scoot needing adult supervision I'm concerned about why THESE adults who have no relation to her except by a tenuous thread. Pinkie would make more sense than them.

Ponyville strikes me as the kind of small town where pretty much everyone knows each other to an extent, and the community is much more tightly knit than in a city or even a bigger town. In that type of environment I don't find the Cakes taking care of her to be particularly odd, they're probably more familiar with each other than you're thinking.

I had no idea Scootaloo's parents were showing up in this episode, so the story was quite a surprise. There's probably evidence that proves otherwise, but I always imagined scoot to not have parents at all, due to them going missing or dying in an accident. I remember there being a fan theory which suggests this and that's likely where I got the idea. I like this episode's happier version of the story more, so no complaints there. Congrats to Scoot for having her parents, I guess? :blue_baloon:

I liked the overall plot, even the ending. Despite that fact, I can also relate to many people who were dissapointed by the ending. I too was wondering how the show will cope with some of the more serious issues such as the seperation of friends, so I was let down when the ending was different from what I expected. In retrospect, however, I'm glad the episode ended the way it did. It would have really broken my heart if the CMC broke. As much as I'd like to see much more mature issues being dealt with in FiM, I want Scoot, Applebloom, and Sweetie Belle to be happy.

Cutie Mark Crusaders forever!

At times last year, I compared S8's more successful episodes to ones with similar ideas, only the latter did them better. This episode reminds me a lot of Tanks for the Memories, only this done supremely better.

  1. Tanks for the Memories establishes an allegory of death with Tank having to hibernate for the winter. Unfortunately, this decision kills all of the stakes instantaneously. Here, not only immediate stakes, but also the plausibility of Scootaloo not being able to see her family for a long time, if not ever.
  2. In Tanks, FS establishes that the tortoise needs to hibernate to feel healthy for the spring. So what does Dash do? Selfishly sabotage the winter-weather process to try to keep him awake. Her quest for company endangered him. She's supposed to be sympathetic, yet doesn't earn it. Now compare that to Scootaloo, who schemed with AB and SB so she stays in the only home she ever knows. She does nothing to make the audience repel her. Her despair, anger, and tears make sense and feel real, making it easier to buy her perspective.
  3. Because Dash was so selfish, she absolutely deserved to listen to the harsh truth, but that wretched sobbing was so unearned. On the other hand, the CMCs weren't the ones to learn the lesson; Scoot's parents were. To do that, she led them to a major event to show them just how important they were in their lives. How TLC was set up and concluded was satisfying, unlike TftM.

Yep, that was the best episode of the season ever. Although I might say that in that case of Scootaloo parents being as they are, not sure if it makes sense for Scootaloo parents to leave her like that with her aunts. :dash:

Some people would argue that her parents were terrible, but then again they didn't force her to be always on the move.

Again, I am seeing the parallels between the African philosophy of Ubuntuism and the reality of Ponyville.

The phrase "It takes a village to raise a child" comes from ubuntuism; to quote from wikipedia:

Quote

Under "unhu" children are never orphans since the roles of mother and father are by definition not vested in a single individual with respect to a single child. Furthermore, a man or a woman with "unhu" will never allow any child around them to be an orphan.

I think the most likely explaination is that the whole of Ponyville was taking responsibility for Scoots; the Cakes have significant social standing within Ponyville (so it makes sense for them to volunteer) and we don't know how long even Rarity or Dashie have been on the rota (for all we know, this has been the routine since before Scoots even MET the rest of the CMC, and Dashie isn't really a go-to for foalsitting) or that the cakes were expected to do that every weekend - we only have the one weekend (the one before her parents arrive) as an example after all.

Moving forward, as her Aunts are planning to move to Ponyville (and you have to wonder how easy it is to find a place there, given Scoots' house was snapped up in days) and she is moving in with them, there shouldn't be a need for foalsitting unless they need a break from CMC antics (so, regularly then :D)

Sure; as scoot's "big sister and mentor" she is probably on every weekend now, while I would assume the cakes only have to do a night every few weeks.  Can totally see Dashie going for that :)

As I've said in other threads one of the few times we see her voluntarily walking rather than flying is when Scootaloo is scared and she's trying to make her feel safe by putting a wing over her.

Indeed. On the very, VERY few occasions she puts her ego aside, it is usually to care for Scoots.

I disagree;

Glimglam certainly took a sensible approach, and possibly the same approach Twilight or Celestia would have taken. Pretty much everything in the episode was either Discord's doing or a consequence of Discord's actions, even Twi's attitude towards Discord (no doubt a major factor in why he wasn't asked to help at the School) are a result of Discord's own actions.

However, she isn't Twi or Celly - she is Starlight Glimmer, a pony whose role as councellor almost certainly stems from Twi's understanding that she needs to work on her Empathy skills, and here, she failed, and that is WHERE she failed; the whole thing could have been headed off at the pass had she understood earlier why Discord was doing these things, and she was ignoring Spike's advice (where by now she should have learned to listen very carefully to what the dragon tells her) to do so.

Another great episode of Season 9.
I’ve been waiting so long for this: Scootaloo’s family finally on screen! I think it’s really great that Lauren Faust’s word about Scoot’s mom and dad having very demanding jobs were confirmed, and they made it as cool as it can be! Although I think it would have been better if their introduced her family members (at least her aunts) to the show earlier, seeing them now is still satisfying.
The story was pretty interesting, they almost convinced me that Scootaloo is indeed moving away. But I’m glad that it all turned out fine.
But the best element of the episode for me was the appreciation of CMC and the display of their accomplishments well-suited for The Last Crusade. They’ve come a long way, and did many great things, and it should be celebrated.

Welp, another popular headcanon debunked:

Scootaloo's not an orphan after all.

Well, that's okay since Scootaloo being an orphan confused me since her parents didn't appear in the other seasons :)
