Okay, I’m going to go to my first FNM tomorrow I think. I believe I’ve stated before I’m a fairly new player and I don’t have play sets of everything (which is so annoying) but I’m going to post this deck and hopefully you guys can critique it and perhaps give me some tips or advice on the deck. It is a blue/back by the way

So what do you guys think? I’ve played it quite a few times and it does work, but I think it could be much better.

 

Because as you said, are new to the game, i will go on the assumption you have low budget. What i take from this is a Blue black draw go deck. The card that stands out to me to be irelevant is index. While it does let you rig your deck for the next five draws, it dosent replace itself meaning ultimately you'll loose cards. Also the facet you're running 10 counterspells before what you want to add in may be a bit too many, i find 8 can eb enough, you can get away with 10 but i usually wouldnt have more. The cheap bombs(money wise anyway), such as your overlord of grixis and stormtide a great cards, especialy for budget decks. While they're not the best for high class compedative, they're still alot of fun to play with. Another fun card for the draw go deck aswell, is Faerie invaders, while it's 5 mana, it's a cheap common that can give you some board pressecce, and if played corretly doubles as a removal spell.

 

If you decide to suddenly spead a ton of money on the game, assuming you want to stay with Blue black, i recomend Snapcaster mgae, he's just total value. , Also Talrand maybe, also wouldn't hurt to make up a sideboard with cards like knight of infamy.

I disagree with this build personaly, it feels like a bad delver deck. I see the idea you're trying to get through. But i've found budget delver an annoying thing to accomplish. But this build dosen't have enough power behind it and you're always blind flipping delver, because of rotation coming up it's gonna be a bit tricky.

 

On a side note, for me, living in the future, it's the 8/9/2012, and that means happy birthday to MTG, which also means magic celebration day, be sure to go to your local store to participate in a minimaster tornament and get free cards .

I will be able to pour money into Magic which I think I will, I love the game. I do have a Tarland which is really nice but I HATE the idea of only having one card in a deck, I’d rather not put it in. I’ve seen Snapcaster at my local card shop and he’s $25 I’m not quite that ready to spend that much on a card. Hmm I like where you are coming from with that Faerie Invaders. I also liked the idea of the Unsummon in the other deck as well. I’m not ready to give up on this deck, I see potential in it.

That or he grows claws and gets +1/+1 and haste.

So anyway, I've got a Commander Tournament in the week, and I've been tweaking my deck. I was wondering if anyone else here played Commander, and what kind of deck they use for it?

 

I have an Animar, Soul of Elements commander deck and a Sun Quan deck. However I mostly use my Vish Kal, Blood Arbiter deck since its the most fun (Its the one I'm using in the event next week).

 

I prefer to call it EDH, but it's really the only format I take seriously enough to spend lots of money on (which is funny, because it's a casual format ). I have 5 EDH decks. In order of preference:

 

1. Niv-Mizzet. Pretty standard U control + massive amounts of card draw. Red is just kinda there for a few burn and field wipe spells, as well as Bulwark, Wild Ricochet, and a few Fork effects. It's fairly strong, especially if you're not aggressive and don't take me out early, but a lot of people instantly target you first when they see Nivvy is your general, because they know you'll spiral out of control given the chance. Luckily, in multiplayer games, I can usually keep a low profile while using group hugs like howling mine or Jace Beleren's +2 to keep people off my back until I can take control of the game, or get enough mana to combo off and counter threats on the same turn. Favorite thing to do in this deck isn't the many infinite combos available, but twincasting a Windfall with Consecrated Sphinx on the field

 

2. Animar. I took what I'd want in a URG aggro deck and then replaced as many non-creature cards as I could with creatures that have similar effects. Obviously, some things like Lead the Stampede and Worldly Tutor are too good to be replaced by creatures, so I kept those. I still have some instant speed removal, as well. This is probably my strongest EDH deck, and best in 1v1.

Teferi + huge Animar + Eldrazi = maximum lulz.

 

3. Ghave. Pretty standard token/counter shenanigans. Even in this mostly aggro deck, I have elements of control, because Gravepact/Butcher of Malakir is just so damn good when I have that many creatures dying whenever I want. Nothing in the deck is ever wasted. As long as I have mana open, a creature dying is a counter on another, or turning it's counters into more tokens. Every time something ETB or dies, it's triggering something. It's kinda slow, though

Looks like I'll be getting some more tech in RTR

 

4. Mimeoplasm. Pretty standard graveyard shenanigans. I don't like this deck much, and I'm going to drop the U and use Jarrod as a general once I get the IvG duel deck (should be later today).

 

5. Ruhan. This is America color control, and I just use Ruhan because he's better than the other Legendaries in those colors, and he's a pretty efficient beater in 1v1. But I'm packing so many take-control and defensive effects that I'm generally the only one with creatures who can do anything anyway. In theory, at least. I don't play this deck often because I don't like it much :/

You could definite use Vindicate, Swords to Plowshares, more dual lands, etc.

Also, you should consider some discard, I think. Castigate is pretty nice since it hits anything and exiles. It seems like single discard isn't all that great in EDH since everybody runs whatever recursion their colors allow, so the fact that it exiles is great for ruining somebodies combo.

I'm on a smallish budget. A lot of the money cards I have in the deck now I was able to trade for.

Well, with the shock lands being reprinted, they'll probably see an initial price spike (since they'll be in standard and literally everybody will need them, because you can't really run mono-colored in Ravnica ), followed by a drop, because they'll be a lot more in circulation. That's my prediction, anyway.

 

You should check out Angel of Despair and Necrotic Sliver. More expensive Vindicate on creatures.

 

Also, you might want to get a Serra Ascendant, since you're running white and it's EDH.

I have a playset of the White/Black shockland, but I have them in my white/black eventide deck. Still I've yet to had any serious problems with my mana base (Except the few times where you never get any land, but that happens to everyone).

I'm not too worried about that type of effect for the deck. As its a Vish Kal deck I really need my creatures to be sacrificed to him so he can swing in for the 21 damage. Most of the time the other creatures in the deck just stall for time. Although if I get out both Mikaeus the Unhallowed and Vish Kal I can use their infinite combo to kill all my opponents creatures which don't have shroud or hexproof. And if I have grave pact or Martyr's Bond or the Butcher of Malakir out things get even more silly.

 

I may get the angel at some point, but I don't really want that sliver.

There are much more useful creatures than that. I suppose he makes a good sacrifice for Vish Kal, but I don't have anything I'd want to take out for it.
