The Brony's Biggest Conflict

Well, we may say we "Love and Tolerate", but we can't deny there are conflicts going on in the Brony Community. There are possibly many conflicts, as well? Maybe it's a conflic with Hasbro, or perhaps anti-bronies or cloppers?

 

What do you think those conflicts are, and could you give your thoughts on it?

Could it possibly be stopped?

Are we the cause, if not, who is?

Is it tearing apart the community from eachother, or the community from the rest of the world?

Here's the thing about that, is that cloppers are perfectly justified. The ponies belong to them, too. It's perfectly all right, the only problem comes when they are loud and obnoxious about it. I would say that the problems that occur in the pony community are based on misunderstanding.

Love and tolerate is the idea, but no community is without its turmoil. You can't exist as a subculture and expect to not have some sort of ongoing conflict. I think our most persistent conflict is with the collective anti-brony community. It's perfectly acceptable to express your dislike for something, but there's a line between that and blatantly scorning something in an offensive way, especially when that something is a person or group of people.

 

I'm not sure there's a real solution aside from the already-in-execution temporary ones, but despite the conflict, the brony community is still able to settle into place and hold together well.

I got no problem with cloppers personally, as long as they keep it to themselves. What I have a problem with are haters who spread nasty rumors about our fair community. Haters like Howard Stern can really have a negative impact, considering thousands listen to his broadcast.

Love and tolerate is a horrible motto to go by as a community as controversal as the Bronies. Its a shit term and gets used in inappropriate times and the fact that its the perfect way for trolls to counter any argument we make is infuriating.

After the Howard Stern broadcast, I'd be ashamed to call myself a brony anywhere but on these forums. I wasn't before, but now I am. I'm a very open-minded person, too ... I believe gay marriage should be legal everywhere, for one. I also believe people should be allowed to do whatever the hell they want to as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else. I get mad, though, when I can't mention the name "My Little Pony" without people associating it with a very weird version of porn. (And it's weird in a bad way, not a good way. ... Normally I like weird things.) That's not fair to the rest of us who just like an intelligently-written, charming cartoon, who don't want to associate the cartoon with anything sexual.

 

At first I was indifferent to cloppers because they weren't bothering me personally, and it was their business. But they make it everyone else's business when they talk about "sweet pony ass" into a microphone to a member of the media, and make ME look like a fool for also calling myself a brony. *Shudder*

Well, reading this thread, I myself see a conflict of sorts already going on, on whether clopping is moral or not. Everyone obviously is going to have their different views on it, and some are more vocal than the rest, I guess. Judging by how quickly a thread's innocent question turned into a debate about clopping, I'd say it's our "biggest conflict". And seeing as how sensitive a subject that is, it's natural for at least of couple of people to get worked up over it, on either side of the issue. That's all it really takes to spark a huge argument.

 

Could it be stopped? Only by one of two ways: Banning Rule34 altogether from the internet (impossible), or practicing what we preach, which is love and tolerance. Extend that motto to everyone, even those who you can't stand because "it gives bronies a bad name", or "I don't like it." Everyone deserves to be trated fairly, and if the community as a whole can wake up and realize that, we'd have solved our largest issue.

I never had the sense cloppers caused excessive friction within the community---at least overtly. As is in keeping with the Zeitgeist of the 21st century, bronies tend to display a "live and let live" attitude toward cloppers, so long as they don't impose to their habits on others. Clopping is nevertheless a more sensational aspect of the brony phenomenon, if only due to the fact the main characters are equines. But the sexual fascination found among a segment of bronies is not idiosyncratic; most every fandom crafts out its own little niche where such activity is visible. Nobody is going to go after, say, some Sonic fans who fantasize about the characters, because that ground has been covered and it does not garner a lot of attention. Given that bronies are receiving press coverage and focus from media sources, people are going to more readily dig into the arguably unsavory facets of the fandom.

 

Again, clopping only seems to be an issue when it is made an issue. Otherwise, how often does it otherwise come up when the show is being discussed? Most of the focus of outsiders falls upon the fact a number of adult men are heavily invested in a cartoon show aimed at girls. In that respect, bronies more readily rally against attempts to pigeonhole the entire community as weird, socially backward, and disturbed. Because clopping feeds into that stereotype, it quickly raises everypony's blood. That is how I view it, at least.

 

I cannot readily think of a major conflict within the community. To me, arguments over shipping and clopping quickly become proxies for other issues, i.e., those concerning general sexual morality. Other arguments tend to be rather fleeting, e.g., disagreements over character interpretation. Our biggest conflicts tend to be external, usually involving the perception of the fandom and the occasional accusation (which may or may not be true, depending on the circumstances) that bronies force MLP onto others when they wish to be left alone. The worst problem bronies face is probably bullying by those who do not understand, refuse to understand, or simply desire to engage in tearing down others.

What I don't think people realize R34 ponies is that EVERYTHING is R34'd. Pretty much every fanbase and form of media has some sort of R34 connection. Look at Pokemon, for example. I'm sure Pokemon has much more inappropriate content then MLP, and yet people do not connect that content with the show/games. Trying to label the cloppers as the source of the problem is incorrect and attempting to snuff out it's existence is hypocritical to what Friendship is Magic has taught most of us: Love and Tolerate.

 

I personally believe that bronies have simply become mis-represented. There was a time when people just linked bronies to people on /co/ and occasionally other 4chan boards who admired the cartoon, the animation, and such. Ask yourself what the term "Brony" means now. Are they just simple fans of the show; are they die-hard enthusiasts who owns mountains of merchandise and whose life revolves around the show; or are we all on a bandwagon, just following the newest fad? Each person I have asked that question to has given me a different answer. Some people don't label themselves as bronies because they don't want to be linked to the die-hard enthusiast. We even gender-split our fanbase, and some of us don't want to even follow through with that! Announcing yourself as a brony is the near-equivalent of coming out as a homosexual now to some people.

 

In conclusion, Friendship is Magic becoming a popular "meme" is the worst thing that happened to the fanbase, we have lost our individuality.

Oglooger, I don't think people are complaining about CWC being a Brony, but rather about him being a Brony before FiM existed. He was the first Brony (as he is an adult male who likes MLP). I think the complainers are worried about people realizing this, and tarring the community with Chris' "autistic, homophobic, racist, sexist, welfare-abusing manchild" brush. In which case, I can kind of understand them; I saw a YouTube video of a news broadcast about Bronies. One of the comments said that people would get the wrong idea because the newscast used pics of the G1 ponies.

For me, the biggest source of conflict seems to the be the people that put the fandom on a pedestal and forget we're just human. The ones that act like we should all be flawless saints and throw a fit and leave when we make mistakes.

 

The thing we have to remember is none of us are perfect, we all have flaws and make mistakes.

I think our biggest conflict is our own motto.

We're meant to "Love and Tolerate" but we're not really doing much of it.

We shouldn't really have a conflict with Hasbro, and there are always going to be anti-bronies that don't like the fandom.

However, why must we have a conflict with cloppers? I'm not one myself, but if we're making a conflict with them, we're essentially making a conflict among ourselves. We're all bronies in the end, so why must we hate on our own community?

I find it amusing how much the views have changed on cloppers from when this topic was started to now.

 

I mean, everyone I've met is like, "You're a clopper, and you're not scared to admit it? Awesome!"

 

Judging from these previous replies, if I had been open about it 6 months ago, it'd have been "Oh, you're a clopper and you're open about it? Fuck you, you disgusting perv."

 

I think, judging by this, we're making progress as a community Dunno about you, but I see this is being more tolerant and respectful, at the least aka "Love and Tolerance."
