Before Twilight

This is something I have been wondering about while watching the first season. How close do you think the 5 were before, Twilight came to Ponyville? I mostly just ask because, watching the first season it almost feels like they are all starting to get to know each other.

 

Here are some examples. In the episode Griffon the Brush Off, Rainbow Dash finds out that Pinkie Pie loves to pull pranks and then they become closer friends. The next episode Look Before you sleep shows that Rarity and Apple Jack did not get along well. They were kind of like the friends who were friends with the same person, but did not like each other. Rarity and Fluttershy were starting to get closer seeing as they go to the spa every week. Also during season 2 it feels like Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash were becoming closer after the flight camp.

 

This is just something I was thinking about.

Well we know that Fluttershy and Rainbow were friends before the others. But as for the rest being friends. I doubt it. I'm sure they knew each other though, but I doubt they were all friends.

I think that Abblejack and Rarity may have known one another but weren't anything close to being friends. They both grew up in a town where everyone pretty much knows everyone else and could possibly have gone to school together.

The only thing that is sure is that Fluttershy & Rainbow Dash were friends since childhood.

I think Rainbow Dash might get to know Applejack before, because they both are very athletic, so they could meet each other on some competitions.

Also, Pinkie Pie is friend of everypony, remember?

I'm still in the first season (via netflix) and I thought the first (or maybe second episode?) was all about how the group became friends through Twilight? Or was it more about Twilight making friends with them...?

IMO they probably knew of each other, but weren't close enough to be called friends. Then Twilight came along and tied them all together.

Hmm good question, I've thought about this actually. I think that they weren't friends before Twilight came to Ponyville. But Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy were obviously already friends.

Well lets see, we know that Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy grew up together in Cloudsdale and that it was Rainbow's Sonic Rain Boom that changed everyone's life. This event caused Fluttershy and Rainbow to move to Ponyville. In that time, Pinkie Pie had to leave her family and travel into town and Applejack had to move back from Manehatten. So its really all a question of how much time elapsed between the Sonic Rain Boom and Twilight moving to Ponyville for her studies. I'd imagine it probably wasn't a lengthy history probably just enough to become settled and get to know each other. I believe Twilight pulled the group together.

As the the theme song says, "...and magic makes it all complete!" In MLP:FiM, the 5 of them couldn't be friends yet because magic was missing, a la Twilight.

They seemed to have a passing awareness of each other at most. Pinkie Pie likely befriended the other four, at least in a distant, amicable manner, since she claims to know everypony in Ponyville. Pinkie also invites the four to the surprise welcome party for Twilight. AJ later mentions in "Feeling Pinkie Keen" that Ponyville is familiar with Pinkie Sense, so Pinkie is likely the most well recognized of the group before Twilight arrives in Ponyville.

 

Other than that, they don't seem to be terribly familiar with one another. The first few episodes are dedicated to exploring their friendships as they blossom (Pinkie: "Well duh!"). "Look Before You Sleep", "Fall Weather Friends", "Griffon the Brush Off", "Green Isn't Your Color"---those episodes are the ones which demonstrate most explicitly that the Mane Six are still getting to know one another.

 

EDIT: Derp. I forgot that Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash knew each other from flight camp. How did that slip by me?

The Mane 6 are still getting to know each other a bit more - I mean, in terms of small groupings, such as the episode with Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash pulling pranks, effectively become closer because they have a few good things in common. We still have yet to explore the other groupings, though - what of the Pinkie Pie and Rarity grouping? We've seen them have genuine mutual respect for each other's interests (Pinkie's defence of Rarity's talents and business) and Rarity seems to enjoy Pinkie Pie's antics, even if they are a bit over-the-top - and this coming from the more sophisticated member of the group.

 

Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy seem to have always been good friends despite their personality contrast - Rainbow Dash is brash, proud, confident, and sometimes even arrogant, whereas Fluttershy is modest, respectful, a bit self-concious, and occasionally isn't confident at all. Both knowing each other from a young age, and Rainbow Dash's loyalty to Fluttershy being demonstrated on said age, you could very easily see the two becoming even closer after the Element of Magic herself steps in and unites the six mares.

 

Applejack and Rarity's relationship is much like Rainbow's and Fluttershy's, although they probably do not have the benefit of knowing each other a whole lot from a young age. Both have contrasting personalities which makes it awfully tricky for them to get along - Applejack would much rather go to a formal event in her bare coat, not caring about what anypony thinks of her, whereas Rarity would spend hours upon hours perfecting a new dress to go to said formal event... and even berate Applejack for having "improper manners". Both of them recognize their own faults eventually, instead of complaining about the other, and with Twilight acting as sort of a medium, the two are able to forgive each other and now appear to genuinely enjoy each other's company because they respect each others' antics.

 

I think it's safe to say Pinkie Pie knew everypony in Ponyville decently well before Twilight came around, but with that being said, I don't think Pinkie was super close to anypony else because it did take stopping Nightmare Moon and using the Elements of Harmony for the Mane 6 to become truly as one - except maybe the Cakes, who basically took Pinkie under their tutelage and consider her their daughter. With all the partying, cheering, and smiling Pinkie Pie gives to other ponies (that takes a lot out of someone's time), it always seems that she never really has any time to spend with a specific group of ponies - eventually it became friends, but prior to that, the element of laughter wasn't doing enough to make herself happy by making close friends. This could easily lead a person feeling lonely at times, because although you know pretty much everyone in town, you don't have "that group" to tell your secrets, life events, or to really have a good time with. Not surprisingly, after Twilight came along, not only did Pinkie finally have a group to hang out (Mane 6) and to really get to know them, her antics and ability to make everyone else happy became that much stronger - especially after going through her own rough times... which were presented with a rather dark atmosphere.

 

 

 

And yes, this is depressing to look at. I would imagine that Pinkie went through this occasionally prior to Twilight's arrival because a pony of her aptitude needs close friends to hang around with.

A lot of people are saying that and I do believe that, but I don't think they talked much after words.

 

I think after Fluttershy got her cutie mark she stayed at the school for a while and then left to live in Ponyville and then Rainbow Dash left after maybe a few years later and also came to Ponyville. I feel like they kept their destine from each other and then after getting the elements they started to remember their friendship. Rainbow Dash could have blamed herself for Fluttershy leaving the school because she could not help her all of the time. So she kept her destines from her.

 

This is just a thought I had about the 2.

My turn to say what everyone else has been saying!

Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy were definitely childhood friends, but that's it. I don't think anyone else knew each other, honestly. And Applejack and Rarity still seem to hate each other.

I think they were all acquaintances before Twilight came along. Pinkie certainly was everyone's friend, but the other Manes were more equal to the rest of Ponyville in those terms. The others were familiar with one another, but barring likes of RD/Flutter they didn't know one another too closely. Twilight's arrival and the ensuing adventure weaved the loose threads into a blanket of close friendship.

I would think they would atleast be acquaintances. Since Pinkie knows everyone in town and is super friendly, she was probably just as close back then as she is now.

I say that they knew each other, but knew each other as in: "Oh, hey. Your back again" kind. They certainly wern't as close as they were before Twilight came along. Heck, they didn't look to be the closest of friends since they wern't really seen together in the first episode.
