I find it amazing how often people shorten this quote to just what I wrote in black text.

Actually, it turns out Descartes DID make the "shortened" version of that, both in French and in Latin - "je pense, donc je suis" and "ego cogito, ergo sum".

These two quotes also happen to be a part of much longer works of his, where he basically says this statement is an inevitable, logical conclusion. His thoughts are the only thing he's certain of - can't entirely trust his senses, nor be certain his convictions and thinking are sound. But he's 100% sure he's having thoughts, and since they exist, so must he, which is reassuring.

 

May I ask where you found the "longer" version of that? Which, by the way, would be way trickier to shorten that way in French than in English. Not to mention the sentence "Je pense, 'donc'." would be grammatically clumsy - not wrong, just clumsy, not something you'd expect from a respected thinker.

It's actually a joke from "Important Things with Demetri Martin" during a segment where he would start with a famous quote and change the meaning by "lengthening" it.  Of course, the long versions were all fake.  I honestly didn't expect for so many people to think I was being serious.
