Concords road to learning to draw ponies!

Concord

Recommended Posts

Hello! Recently i have decided that i really wanted to learn how to draw... *Mlp style more precisely speaking.*

I'm new to drawing, so i ask for your help, tips, on how to draw correctly! (That's why i'm making this thread)

I will be drawing with pencils and paper, although, somewhere in the future, i'd love to try out digital art.

I'll be trying to draw atleast 1 work per day, and as soon as i do that, i'll be posting them here :P

Again, please critique, please help me out here, because this is something i really wanted to do for a long time, but never pushed myself to do it.

So, the first drawing is here:

Also, i'd love if someone thought me about skeletons and how to use them...

Thank you! :P

Here's a smooth version of the skeleton I use for ditigal art (same as hand drawn, but I'm too lazy to get a book, draw then scan.)

My regular lines are ridicously ugly because I don't use a tablet. :P Plus I've memorized how to do all the leg styles, so I don't do the guide for them.

This skeleton is based off of the one you use if drawing a horse, basically (I'm a horse person and thats one of the reasons I'm here).

Anyways, that looks really nice for a first attempt! The mane seems to be a bit flat, and the tail a bit too out, but the body looks nice, the back legs might be a bit too curvy though. The shading on the torso looks awesome too. :3

EDIT: The skeletons muzzel is off... dammit.

Did you draw this off the top of your head or did you copy a picture of a pony?

I'm starting off DRAWING MLP and would like some advice.

Nah, i found a skeleton tutorial, then added some parts i like.

I hope to try out different posses aswell, i'm wondering on how to do those...

And your first drawing out of the chute completely destroys anything I could ever hope to draw. I like it! The neck is a tad long, however, and something about the left eye is bothering me. But I can't tell what it is.

If you ever need a model to practice drawing, I have an OC or two for you to draw.

Very good for a start, much better than my first attempts

As for reference, this pic taught me all I know about mlp anatomy.

As for tips:

-use a soft, easy to erase pencil (you'll erase a lot)

-invest in a decent set of coloured pencils (15-20  colours, should layer well, come at about 10-15 bucks at every art store)

-draw as much as possible: draw ponies from different angles, standing on their hindlegs, flying, sitting, lying on their back...

if you're not sure, how something should look, google for a reference (Pinkies is great for poses).

After a while you'll get a feel for the pony anatomy. Same goes for the face and expression.

My Art Thread, updated (almost) daily

Tomorrow will take us away, far from home

No one will ever know our names

But the bard songs will remain.
