On that note, I've been there many times:

Well this might be a combination of localization and animation.

Here in the wonderful U.S.of A. "cider" is a short hand for "apple cider" which is often served around autumn as that's the apple picking time and it's basically spicier and all around better apple juice.

In the great bastion of Europe, to my understanding, "cider" means "hard cider" which very much is alcoholic.

(Not that either is exclusive to the places that gave rise to them.)

Further confusing matters is that Sweet Apple Acres cider foams up, which only happens if the beverage is fermented. Further, further calling something a non-alcoholic when it very much is isn't unheard of in animation either.

So, like so much in the show, I think it's up for interpretation.

I was going to say this. Cider can be alcoholic or non alcoholic.

But even if it is non-alcoholic cider, it is that good.

I would have to agree. Whatever the case, it's apparently good enough for ponies to camp out ahead of time and Dash to be frothing at the mouth more than the mug itself for them.

This would be ever more impressive if it isn't alcoholic.

The distinction between hard cider and non-alcoholic cider is largely artificial. If you crush fruit, get the juice, and let it sit -  it will ferment on its own. It will have alcohol in it even if it is just a little. That is why juice in the supermarket is processed (and to prevent possible spoilage).

The word "cider" is like the word "wine". There are non-alcoholic wines out there and they are wines. Sometimes cider is even referred to as apple wine. Both words strongly suggest alcohol.

And "applejack" is an alcoholic beverage as already pointed out here. So ponies drink alcohol.

Usually options are available for non-alcoholic, like Apple Cider or Berry Cider. Although if you are bored you can add your own mixture lol

Read the flavour text.

1.More proof that cider is alcoholic

2.More proof that Berry punch is an alcoholic :3

From my understanding if there is no foam it's nonalcoholic and if it has foam it is Alcoholic (cause its fermented)

Applejack's Cider is Hella Foamy, so I would assume it not only has alcohol but a lot of it :3

Also the way the ponies react to it tells me there is more to it than simple non alcoholic stuff. Have you ever seen anyone do this for apple juice?

I kind of feel like the episode was written such that adults would equate cider to alcohol and laugh at Dash's addiction while it would woosh over the younglings' heads.

I don't think all apple cider is alcoholic. I had some of this apple-flavored beer about a week ago. I thought it tasted pretty good.

I've also had Crispin in the past, but I think I like Shock Top more.

if it were here in the UK then that stuff would be alcoholic and bloody strong.

i think there was a whole re-dubbing and controversy with the episode being shown here on TinyPop because it was cider not apple juice. I think its now changed to apple juice.

we dont have your silly weak non alcoholic cider. seriously, its just fizzy apple juice. silly yanks.

Its not alcohol its love and that good apple family sweat. Just kiddin'! Yeah I am pretty sure its alcohol. BUT! Since it is a kids' show they will never admit to it

Um... aren't ponies actually better handling alcohol than humans by nature? As in , their bodies can ferment grains in them AND they denser bodies to deal with it all?

Realistically speaking, it can perfectly be magically fermented hard cider and they would drink it with the same effects of regular apple cider. However, they won't show it to kids because it's not common knowledge that ponies are harder to get drunk than humans AND it may lead to alcohol consumption.

So the answer would be: "What you think it is." If you think it's alcoholic or not, it doesn't matter. Writers know UK's usage of the word, so I'm sure they left it ambiguous for us to ramble about and keep watching the show. So... yeah, there it lies.

Apple cider isn't typically alcoholic, not here anyway, but I think in the show it's one of those inferred alcoholic substances that not all kids will understand right away. It's like when Spike was demanding another donut at the cafe because he was fed up, or when a pony had too much salt and got kicked out a bar. These aren't something you would get drunk from, but we know what the creators are hinting at.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was alcoholic, though it's never been addressed by the show (and I imagine it probably never will be).

It's a drink made from fermented apples..all alcoholic beverage contain some kind of ferment...because it's a children's show there's no way the beverage is alcoholic..probably just sweetened apple water with cinnamon or spice to make it tasty.
