Having two computers and three of the main OS's, I like to say that I'm well rounded. Having experience in all two/three, I would like to give my opinion on what each of the three have to offer.

PC

The most heavily used of all of the Operating systems, PC is pretty much a hardy, multi-purpose computer. It has a very large amount of programs made exclusively for it, is able to play a bigger variety of games, and can physically last longer than Macs in most cases. PC's are usually cheap and offer good quality for extended periods of time. They require more knowledge of the inter-workings of a computer, however, and can be a turn-off to most people. PC's can also get viruses and other forms of malware easier than Macs.

Mac

The artsy computer, Macs lack physical stability, but make up for it in their ease of use. Macs are lighter, thinner, and easier to carry, making them better for portability. The design is also better for the average consumer; looking nicer and being more aesthetically pleasing. Just like PC's, Macs also have some exclusive programs and hardware, synchronize with other apple products easily, and very rarely, if not ever, get viruses. However, Macs cannot run some files and can't play some of the games that PC's can, nor are they easy to come by. Typically more expensive, Macs usually drive the average consumer away with the sheer steepness of their prices.

Linux

A more advanced OS, Linux is not really something that the general public would go out of their way to get. It requires software knowledge and basic coding, but is less prone to viruses and is open source, so you can format it the way that you want it to be. Some of the programs are not as good as the OS X or Windows counterparts, such as Open Office compared to Microsoft Office.

Since the main argument for PCs is "I can get a PC that can do everything a Mac can for less money" I'd like to ask you to find me a PC laptop with an i7 processor, nvidia graphics card, solid state 500gb flash drive, 5 million pixels in a 13" display, weighs 3 pounds, has the latest Bluetooth and WiFi, 720p camera, 16gb of memory, 7 hours of wireless web with two months of standby time, less than ten seconds of boot time, runs OS X with full comparability, fits in a manila envelope, made from a solid aluminium unibody, backlit keyboard, speech to text integration (and soon Siri), customizable gestures for trackpad and mouse, one convenient place to download programs, apps, and games, synchronization with your phone, tablet, and mp3 player, silent asymmetrical fans, and has access to the greatest customer service in the world all for thousands of dollars less. Clearly, the only way to have all of the features of a Mac, is to get a Mac.

I have tried both PC and Mac, and I prefer the PC over the Mac. Mainly because the PC is more for games and general messing around, and because I'm much more familiar with a PC than with a Mac.

And for those of you who say "You can get a PC that can do everything a Mac can for less money" I'd like to ask you where I can get a PC with an i7 processor, nvidia graphics card, solid state 500gb flash drive, 5 million pixel 13" display, weighs 3 pounds, has the latest Bluetooth and WiFi, 720p camera, 16gb of memory, 7 hours of wireless web with two months of standby time, less than ten seconds of boot time, runs OS X with full comparability, fits in a manila envelope, made from a solid aluminium unibody, backlit keyboard, customizable gestures for trackpad and mouse, silent asymmetrical fans, and has access to the greatest customer service in the world. Build it yourself, silly.

Also, PC just means personal computer, so it could be windows, a linux OS, or OSX. I dislike Macs, because they have pretty shitty specs for their price. Nvidia? Have fun with your melted GPU. A 500gb SSD only costs 370, so I could easily buy one and put it on a cheaper build, or whatever I have. I highly doubt that you will ever need 16gb of RAM for what you intend to do with a Mac, since many RAM intensive games aren't on a Mac. I don't even understand your "7 hours of wireless web with two months of standby time". Many other BIOS can now boot in less than ten seconds, and why would you want OSX anyway? The Macs that come with the previous specs do not fit in envelopes, ya know. Tons of cases have aluminum bodies, LED keyboards are easy to find, no fans are silent if you actually do intensive stuff, and there are much better cooling systems. You almost got me with that "greatest customer service in the world".

libre office? Linux isn't an OS, by the way. It's a kernel.

Actually, Apple pays their employees to deny the fact that their computers get viruses. It's much more common than you think.

PC = PERSONAL COMPUTER

Viruses and malware aren't that common if you actually know how to browse safely. I've only had one virus before and all I had to do was boot in safe mode and kill it in the command prompt. You don't need to know the inner workings of a computer, they have the same things as a Mac. CPU, RAM, BIOS, Motherboard, GPU, Cooling system, Hard Drive, etc.

If I were to game all day, id easily go with a custom built PC. If I were to use it for everyday computing, id go with the iMac.

Dont get me wrong, iMacs are very nice. But I want a PC that I can trust for playing high power games.

One other thing: Im not all into the Intel core processors anymore. Im more into AMD, after they featured thier new FX Vishera 8 core processors.

libre office? Linux isn't an OS, by the way. It's a kernel.

Linux being a OS depends on your definition of an Operating System. The general definition of a OS is

"The software that supports a computer's basic functions, such as

scheduling tasks, executing applications, and controlling peripherals."

Which Linux itself can do just fine. If you consider it to be the whole package, something that comes with extra software for a end user to work with, an interface that comes with it, etc. Then sure, Linux is only the kernel in a full fledge GNU/Linux Distribution.

Usually when people refer to Linux in general they are speaking of the whole package, similar to what Windows or OSX is.  So i don't think it is wrong to say Linux is a OS as long as you are not speaking about technical matters deep down (such as Kernel Space vs Userspace) in which details like this are important.

Apart from the envelope thing: Lenovo ThinkPad T430. :D

post-9627-0-24492600-1360091235_thumb.jpg

Yes, it even runs Mac OS, there are instructions available on the internet, pretty much all ThinkPads can run Mac OS. It may require some altering of hardware though. (changing WIFI card from Intel to Atheros)

As for the other stuff, it can take up to 3 SSD's, which means 1,5TB Flash Storage, can be configured with an i7 and NVIDIA GPU.

It may have a 14.0" display, but it has a resolution of 1600x900, which without scaling is just right for 14". (131 DPI) At least you get away from those horrid 1366x768!

It weighs 2,3Kg with 9c battery, I ain't sure what that is in pounds. It has the latest Bluetooth (4.0) and the Intel 6300 WIFI card with 3 antennas. It is the best WIFI card for notebooks that money can buy. Mac's only have 1 Antenna and a cheap Atheros card.

The T430 also has a 720p Webcam, can take up to 32GB of RAM, has a battery life of 12h when surfing the web, which can be extended to 24h with the slice battery, but it "only" lasts one month in standby. Still, 24h!

Boot time under Windows 8 should be less than 5 seconds.

The body is made from magnesium-alloy and carbon fiber, the latter being lighter and more durable than aluminum. It is used in formula 1 cars.

There is also an internal rollcage which absorbs most of the force upon impact. The hinges are made from stainless steel.

The T430 also has a backlit keyboard and Thinklight, which is a small LED in the display bezel which illuminates the whole keyboard from the top.

Speech to text is a software feature, I'm sure there's something available for Windows. Windows 8 already has voice recognition, it works very well with the T430's stereo microphones.

The multitouch touchpad can be adjusted in the drivers where you can configure the different gestures. Additionally it also has the legendary trackpoint which is far more precise than any touchpad.

The Windows 8 App Store is that convenient place you were talking about, Windows 8 also has a Sync feature.

It only has one fan, but it runs so silently you can't even hear it. There is also a program called ThinkPad Fan control which allows you to switch off the fan. Thanks to the *cough* thick chassis *cough* it doesn't even run hot then. It stays cool even without a fan. I wouldn't try that when gaming though.

Customer service is good too, I once sent in one of my ThinkPads and 2 weeks later got it back with a new mainboard, no questions asked.

All of this fun will cost you less than 1500$. Depends on the config. There are also coupons and special offers available. The T430 starts at about 780$! (no coupons)

On top of all that it is also MIL-Spec tested and water resistant. B)

Ive been with my thinkpad for who knows how long, and windows hasn't failed me yet XD

Well, aside from the occasional freezes, most probably due to hardware limitations. Both PCs and Macs are great, its just the pricepoint of the latter scares me. Pertaining to laptops(i switched over from desktops a while ago, so i cant say much about that), the weight and looks of the machine have never been prevalent factors for me, and i could always find a deal on a windows laptop for at least half price then that of a macbook.

For example (also in response to the above post on finding a laptop), I recently upgraded to an Ideapad Y580; got a sweet deal on it for $850, coupons and warrenty included.

Comes packed with a Quad Core i7(3610qm) 3.4 ghz turbo, GTX 660m 2GB, FHD display (I dont know if its' an IPS display, but it looks beautiful, aside from it's glossiness), backlit keys, 1TB HD with SSD,  and i also upgraded it to 16gb RAM (On site it says up to 8GB- thats BS).

post-8441-0-46359100-1360095135_thumb.jpg

Everything i asked santa for and more; Id say this is the better system. One complaint though, it weighs about 6lbs. LOOL

Though I still use my old thinkpad, this thing's stronger than my nokia.

Haha, he probably mean laptop, which, although not as prevalent, still quite a lot out there. And for better prices at that, aside from alienware XD

Let me break it down.

  • i7s are common.
  • nVIDIAs have a higher than normal failure rate, I'm sticking with ATI (and even they can't get a decent hybrid setup going).  So naturally battery life and video performance are going to be on the extreme ends.  Also you run the risk of cooking the battery with that.
  • My 15 year old laptop has a month standby time.  I don't particularly see the point (it even says on its LCD dashboard 28 days) in leaving a computer in standby that long.
  • If boot time is important use hibernation.
  • Latest Bluetooth and Wifi - MiniPCI-E card.  Easily upgradable providing it is not a Lenovo.
  • Cameras are overrated.
  • 16GB of memory is very easily and cheap even if it is SODIMMs.
  • Aluminum is much, much weaker than Magnesium (or in some cases

Titanium but IBMs using that I think was restricted to the X only).

  • While backlit keyboards are nice I'm a bit neutral.  I've used keyboards

enough to know where all the keys are based on the nubs on the F and J

keys.  Aside: My Toughbook has the very rare Texas board and Emissive

keyboard assembly.  Very nice but I'm still impartial to the ThinkPad's

ThinkLight since the emissive 'can't be turned off'.

  • I have too many computers to customize. XD

Personally, I'm PC all the way. There are a few reasons why

1. I've tried using a Mac computer and I just don't like the feel of it. Sure, it's very smooth, but I can't get used to how it works.

2. Although the hardware for Mac is good, there are quite a few games out there that are only Windows compatible. One example is Skyrim.

3. Mac isn't good for business majors. Especially when probably 97% of businesses are using Windows based machines.

4. Why would I spend $3,000 on a computer that isn't very well known for having user replaceable parts? I'd rather invest $1,500 in the parts I need and build it myself. That way if there's a problem, I can order the new part and have my PC fixed in a couple of days rather than having to send it in for service.

I, personally, have a PC. But, I would rather have a Mac.

The reason for this is because I like to produce media. Such as music and videos. The Mac has a better platform when it comes to producing media.

However, I am not just choosing one company and one platform alone. As, I do many things, such as gaming.

Later in my life, I would like to buy a Mac as well as an Alienware computer. Alienware is a company that designs their computers for gaming. Alienware runs like a charm on games.

why would you want OSX anyway?

The Macs that come with the previous specs do not fit in envelopes, ya know.

Except building a laptop with those specs will still run you a pretty penny and the average user would rather just walk into a store and buy something off the shelf. Even if that means paying a premium since you pay for convenience no matter the form. Only ThinkPads are really on the same playing field because of their construction and to get one of comparable specs doesn't make them that much cheaper. An hp or Dell with a very thin piece of metal on the lid is not comparable to an Apple or Lenovo, the rest of the body is still creaky plastic.

That's just stereotyping. I've had countless nvidia cards and have never had any problems with them melting, or even overheating for that matter. I've never had issues with AMD cards either other than most games/programs I mess with tend to favor nvidia, but that is the game developers fault not the card maker.

Who needs 16gb of RAM for gaming anyways? You can max most games out running only 4 and still have plenty to multitask. You get higher amounts of RAM for programs/tasks like CS6, Maya, HD video editing which is what most people with Macs tend to focus on. Not games. I only have 16gb in my current Windows desktop because it was on sale for the same price as an 8gb kit and I don't think I've seen close to 50% of it used yet. But if you buy RAM upgrades from any PC manufacturer you are silly, it can be gotten for MUCH less from newegg.

Some people just prefer it? Bashing on someone because of the OS they prefer is like saying someone is stupid because they like the color yellow when the clear choice is blue since that is what the most popular color is. To each their own.

Actually those specs can be had on the 15" MBP line. Envelope fitting? Not quite, but very close to being half the thickness (or more) of most Windows rigs.

The main thing that gets me is the backlit keyboards. I personally have got to have one and they aren't very common in the Windows market. But a lot of the other stuff listed is just personal preference stuff as well. I see no point in the retina display since the distance you use a laptop is greater than a phone or tablet so chances are the standard resolution looks just fine. Weight doesn't actually bother me. Camera isn't something I have ever used. Standby time I don't care about. In the end it all comes down to personal preference though no matter what.

Word of advice, unless you absolutely need that gaming rig to be a laptop, stay away from Alienware. They are way overpriced. I just built me a rig myself for $1500 that a comparable AW desktop would run $2900. I'm not including mouse, keyboard, monitor, etc. in those prices. That markup is worse than Apple. I had a few of their laptops and they were very nice and could play anything, but looking back they so were not worth it (well maybe the M11x was). I purchased an M17x when they first came out, spent close to $5000. So yea... >.<

Apart from the envelope thing: Lenovo ThinkPad T430. :D

Not even close to being comparable. The nvidia in that is only a 5400m, the MBPs use a GT 650m. If you are going to provide a counter it has to be comparable specs. You need to stay within the ThinkPad line for build quality and that means you have to grab a W series for the graphics solution. The only comparable graphics solution Lenovo offers is the K2000m (basically the 650m, maybe a tad slower) and that only comes in the w530. Those start at $1300 with a $250 upgrade to the K2000m. I've lost no less than 10 8800GTs die and have some wear and tear on a GTS 250.  Not to mention, hilariously, the ThinkPad T60p line with the Quadro manufactured before I think Q3 2008 had a 100% defect rate (similar to the sound chip in the Toughbook CF-27 Mark IV but for a different reason).  The only exception that where EVGA is at fault is a AGP 7600GS in which the capacitors vented.

I've yet to have an ATI chip fail with the exception of the BGA failing on an abused ThinkPad X31.

Fun fact: The BIOS on the 8800GT Is designed to ramp up at 85C.

World of Warcraft 64.

Aside: The ASUS G73 has I think the GeForce 450, 550 and 650 depending on the generation of that laptop.

Personally, I use Windows the majority of the time, but truth be told, they're all computers, they all take you to the same internet. Unless you're doing some type of specialized work or running a server or something, there's little reason to pick one over the other, so I just tell people to use what they can afford and what they're most familiar with

Still doesn't need 16. You could play all day long and it would only use 4 max, and if you are hitting that then you either have a ton of addons or something is wrong. Check the forums, most people only see 2 maybe 3 gb usage even with the 64 client.

The ASUS G7 series rigs are usually a slightly cheaper alternative to the single card version M17x, which has always had the same cards. But those are GTX cards.

Eh, building it yourself would still be cheaper, but I guess some people just want convenience. Unfortunately, a lot of premade windows desktops are pretty bad, too. I do agree about your thinkpads, though.

Well to run crysis on high...

• Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8

• Latest DirectX 11 graphics card

• Latest quad core CPU

• 8GB Memory

• Example 1 (NVIDIA/Intel): NVIDIA GTX 680, Intel Core i7-2600k

• Example 2 (AMD): AMD Radeon HD7970, AMD Bulldozer FX4150

Looks like 2x as much. And the standard Mac user, as you said, won't need 16gb of RAM for their facebook machine anyway, but I was just disproving an argument with my 16gb RAM statement.

Some people just prefer it? Bashing on someone because of the OS they prefer is like saying someone is stupid because they like the color yellow when the clear choice is blue since that is what the most popular color is. To each their own.

Why not just use Macbuntu, or anything that actually respects your freedoms more than Mac? I sure do love people restricting my own computer use.

But all of those big name media production programs run on windows and mac. I use DAWs that many Mac musicians use, and I use Windows. Dude, don't waste your money on alienware. It's just spending money on a stupid case, and the computer has bad specs. Plus, they're ugly.

speech to text integration (and soon Siri)

I don't think a bland and lifeless "artificial intelligence" is a selling point for a computer nor is 500g of flash, i'd rather have 1TB of hard drive space.

Anyways, I prefer PC because every PC I've ever used in life has always been good to me yea, I needed to fix it up but it always did what I needed it to do. And don't give me this BS that "MACS ARE 4 CREATIVE PEPOL" because I use Sony Vegas 11 (haven't gotten my hands on 12) and After Effects CS6 and have never needed anything else (I also use an older version of Photoshop  but whatever) I also prefer PC because it's interface (speaking about Win7) makes it very easy to have everything where I want it. Where Macs have this smooth and simple whatever that I have a distaste for. And besides editing I love gaming so PC has been able to fill all my needs. Sure Macs can so these things as well, but for a lot more money you could be spending on other things. But don't get me wrong, PC's can be overpriced as well. *cough Alienware cough*

I've have a PC, and I've used a Mac back in high school. I prefer the PC, because I never really got the hang of the Mac, plust it just has too many functions for me. I like things to be simple sometimes.

I used to be a huge Mac fan, years ago. I grew up on PC's in my home, but used Macs in elementary school. Eventually, the school district went to PC's, but my interest in Macs only grew. I started out buying old ones off of eBay, and eventually received a Mac mini for Christmas when I was 14. I've bought and sold a few more Macs since that time.

But in the last three or four years, I have disliked the direction Apple has been taking, with all of their products. I've used newer Macs, and they just don't have the same feel they once did. I used to love the "Aqua" interface of OS X, the simple white and grey tones and the "bubbly" feel. Their hardware was unique and built to the highest standards, while breathtaking to look at.

Now, everything in OS X is all "shiny" and "boxy.", and reeks of influences from that garbage they call "iOS." (Forgive my gratuitous quotes and vague descriptions) The hardware is "razored" and the lines are too defined. Not to mention, anything they come out with is instantly cool and popular, no matter how little of a change it brings. Call me stuck in my ways, but I miss the Apple of 10 years ago - or so. I will defend that era in the company's history with my last dying breath. But the Apple of today? I think I'll pass.

I guess you could say I'm for PC's these days, though nothing from Microsoft nor the OEM's particularly gains my affection. I just hope they take their own direction, instead of what seems to be the trend of copying Apple's every move. (I'm looking at you, Windows 8.)

Apple is the definition of simple. For example, when you first open the box containing an iPhone 5, this is the first thing you see: tumblr_m92nk4iv4S1ra3i1eo1_500.jpg

Same thing for almost all their products. Easy to learn, easy to use. I'm guessing you just didn't have the attention span to take the time to learn. They have dozens of different ways to do different things so you can do whatever is the best way for you or at the time.

I like how you didn't actually post the processing power of the CPU or GPU or how much RAM the system has. Also, 500GB only? Excuse me while I lol.

Woah, people still believe this? In 2013? The lulz have been doubled!
