What did you first think of each of the Mane 6 when you started to watch the show?

Recommended Posts

Before I watched ponies, when I was witnessing macros and their other memetic appearances outside of the show (keep in mind this was when I was avoiding them as much as I could [didn't know what I was thinking @-@], so I knew next to nothing about them)

Twilight Sparkle- Iconic! Her MaNe, her NaMe, her appearance, I think I took her as the focused mane character.

Pinkie Pie- I saw that that she was one of the most popular ponies with the community, and could tell that she was an obvious comic relief charcater, she had me interested a lot.

Applejack- Not much I could say, except that she definitely stood out from the fact that she has an accessory, while nopony else did.

Rainbow Dash- Before I watched the show, I knew that Dashie was best pony! I could tell it from her appearance, her assuming charcater, and her mane, I knew she was the "cool" one out of the group.

Rarity- Again, not much. I guess she *did* stick out a bit with her poise, but that didn't really reach me.

Fluttershy- I could tell that she was the shy one...and I think that's it....I mean idunno, I guess I thought she was cute...or something...

When I watched the first episode-

Twilight Sparkle- Yep. Pretty much the same....I mean that name...Twilight Sparkle....she even sours like the fully focused mane character! Voiced by Tara Strong, how could she not be awesome? Yeah, anti-social and stuff, but her personality and everything was perfect!

Pinkie Pie- Well, a two-second long gasp don't say much.... But after that, I could tell why so many bronies loved her, she was random, she has something for the ol' fourth wall, and she's flat-out hilarious.

Applejack- I knew she was especially friendly from the start, but that's uh...I don't remember much of what I first thought of her...she was...I guess friendly is it. ._. [/badmemory] Her accent is pretty cool, and I knew she was a likeable pony.

Rainbow Dash- Yes....the moment I've been waiting for...the instant I saw her...so AWESOME! I really wanted to find out what her voice sounded like, the instant I heard it..:D I mean at times, I was dissapointed that I found it not as awesome as I thought it would be, but other than that, her character was undoubtedly awesome, and like I thought, she was obviously the "cool" one. I knew she would be my favorite pony. :3

Rarity- I liked her accent...or whatever Tabitha portyrayed her as...I just liked her personality. She was very helpful to Twilight, not a fru-fru at all in my book!

Fluttershy- I knew that she was also very popular with the fans, so I knew this would be interesting. I heard her singing, thought to myself "That isn't very shy". The instant Twilight got her attention....yup. I understand why people like her so much, she's so adorable and so shy! Nothing negative here at all!

Meh...for my opinion right now, it's pretty much the same for everypony. I focus on the positive aspects of the mane 6, and that's how I lie to see them. :)

Twilight has been my favorite since the beginning, Pinkie Pie annoyed me for a while, and the rest fell in between.

Twilight - Book Nerd... BIGTIME.

Pinkie - ADHD Pony Spaz.

Rarity - Frilly Fashionista.

Fluttershy - Quiet scared thing.

Applejack - Redneck... Like Whiskey Tango kind of Redneck.

Rainbow Dash - Amusingly, I thought she was a school dropout. I was right.

Rainbow Dash - Amusingly, I thought she was a school dropout. I was right.

I'm confused though, did she really drop out of flight school or did she graduate soemthing? Cause that doesn't sound like Rainbow at all...

I know this is an old topic, so I hope it's okay that I'm replying to it! I was thinking about my original viewing of the show when I replied to the "Which episode got you hooked" thread and wanted to discuss my thoughts on each of the characters.

Twilight Sparkle: My first thought, unfortunately, was of those horrible Twilight novels where the vampires...sparkle, so I thought: wow, what a terrible name! I wonder if the writers did that on purpose. Anyway, I didn't like Twilight much at first. I thought she was snotty, boring and kind of Mary Sueish. I didn't really start to enjoy her until "Look Before You Sleep," when her social ineptitude became very funny and adorkable.

Rarity: Wow, a British pony? Cool! I really liked her accent and also enjoyed her OCD-like tendencies and drama queen behavior. I always have a soft-spot for uptight/OCD characters for some reason. I also thought her name was really cool.

Pinkie Pie: My favorite right away. Just so funny and random. She reminds me of lots of other ditzy cartoon characters that I like

Applejack: I remembered Applejack from the G1 cartoons, so I was happy to see her again. Loved the accent and country mannerisms. Overall, I really liked her character, her strength, and her no-nonsence attitude. Infinitely better than the wimpy damsel in distress she was in G1.

Rainbow Dash: I thought she was a dude at first. Am I the only one? Anyway, strange as it may seem, Rainbow Dash actually made the LEAST impression on me during my initial viewing. She was okay, but just kind of there and sort of forgetable. I liked her in "Party of One," however, when she gets Pinkie Pie to come to the surprise party. Later, after I watched more episodes, I found I really didn't care for her.

Fluttershy: Thought she was cute and funny. Actually a lot funnier than I expected her to be, because that type of character can be sort of dull at times. But to me, she was one of the funniest characters alongside Pinkie and Rarity.

And last but not least, Spike: I loved him. Probably the funniest character to me. He kind of reminds me of Michael Cera or someone. So nerdy, but also kind of cool. Still one of my favorites, but I wish he had more screentime.

Rainbow Dash-- She has been, and will continue to be, the awesome badflank of the show. My opinion of her hasn't really changed. Though her fangasm around the Wonderbolts is rather annoying.

Twilight Sparkle -- She reminded me of me a lot. Still does. I can empathize with her the most. And I like that about her. I hope she shows up more in Season 3.

Rarity -- Ugh, just like I would love TF2 a lot more if the demoman was gone. I'd love MLP a lot more if Rarity was gone. Whiny, stuck-up, fashonista who doesn't live up to her element? Blech. Ugh, can we just stop talking about her? I dislike people and ponies like Rarity. (Or some of those snooty Canterlot folk. They need a a character like Robin Hood to kick their flank a little! Hey, who wants to draw a Robin Hood pony for me? xD I kid. Unless you want to.)

Applejack -- Her accent annoyed the heck out of me. Still does. But she's tolerable I suppose. Though in my opinion she lives up to her element too much. Sometimes you need to be able to bluff. Not lie, just say a vague statement and let them arrive at the wrong conclusion. Though, I agree with the statement that sometimes "The truth is the best lie."

Fluttershy -- My opinion of Flutters hasn't changed much. She's really cute, but if I was transported across time, space, and reality to Equestria I can safely say I would take advantage of her hospitality.

Pinkie Pie -- For the first season and a half, she was an annoying immersion breaking, stupid, boring slapstick comedy character who could do nothing but laugh or be laughed at. At least she lived up to her Element I suppose. But I would always cringe and hope her scene was over quickly whenever she appeared. Then the Baby Cakes episode came and I saw that she had more to her than just one-liners and slapstick comedy. In that one episode, enough of her was shown that she became a true character and not comic relief. (In a show that doesn't need comic relief mind you.) Ever since then I've liked Pinkie much, MUCH better.

EDIT: Suppose I should mention Spike... Uh, well. He exists. There you go.

Twilight:

I thought she was okay. I figured she was the Mary Sue, the character who didn't socialize but was still liked by everyone. As the episodes progressed, I started to enjoy her more, especially Lesson Zero!

Applejack:

I didn't mind her. I thought her design was adorable though, the freckles and the color scheme was just awesome ^_^

Fluttershy:

Don't kill me, but I didn't like Fluttershy. I'm not shy. Not one bit of me is shy. So Fluttershy, who is extremely shy, didn't appeal to me. It was annoying how quiet she was. Then, as the episodes went on, I started to see more of her personality, and I liked her!

Rarity:

She reminded me of my best friend. My friend is always trying to fix my hair, or get me to wear make up, or dye my hair to a normal color (PINK HAIR FTW). However, my best friend is also really nice, and a great person, so I had an open mind for Rarity. And Rarity turned out to be one of my favorites.

Rainbow Dash:

I liked Rainbow Dash. I didn't once think she was a boy. I found her arrogance sort of...nice. And her voice >_< VOICE CRACKS!

Pinkie Pie:

I always loved Pinkie. From the moment Pinkie Pie threw that party, I found myself thinking 'Wow, that seems like something I would do!' The person who introduced me to MLP actually did it by linking me to a video titled 'Pinkie's best Moments', and said that I reminded her of Pinkie. I never stopped liking Pinkie. SHE IS BEST PONY.

I liked all the characters at the start, except Rarity. Not a lot of people liked Rarity at the start, she was the 'girly girl' of the show. And then episode 14 hits, everyone goes back though the episodes and realize Rarity isn't being girly, and then everyone loves her :D

Actually, the most hated characters at the start were the CMC. Man, so many people used to just hate the CMC, thankfully they grew on everyone.

Well I thought Rarity was just a bit uppity for my liking but as the episodes went along she became rather likeable. Hopefully Applejack will get her moment in season 3.

Before I watched the show:

I originally thought Twilight wouldn't be as serious.

Fluttershy looked like she was going to be the insane one (I was right to some extent)

Pinkie Pie I thought was going to be a rather cheesy type of hyper

Rainbow Dash looked like she was going to be the more playful, laid back of the group

Rarity looked fashionable and appeared to be the brains

And Applejack looked like she was going to be the athlete

Of course, that changed instantly when I watched it.

Pinkie: If you want my advice, you should just lie down in front of a Rocket.

Twilight: You're absolutely right.

Now:

Pinkie: WHY CAN'T I NOT LIKE YOU?!

Twilight: Who's the crazy one again?

- I instantly knew I was going to hate Rarity. I just thought she was pompous, was completely stupid, and honestly didn't deserve to be anything of a role model for kids.

- Rainbow Dash reminded me of my friend, who is a tomboy and a HELL of an athlete. She, however, did not have an ego the size of everest.

- I absolutely LOVED Pinkie Pie. She reminded me of... me. A hyperactive nut job that can go balls to the walls serious in a second. Pinkie Pie always was adorable, and was scary sometimes (Party of One anyone?).

- Fluttershy was the most adorable little thing. Enough said.

- Twilight Sparkle, or best pony, was my favorite in the start. Adorkable, and read just like me: day and night. She also seemed very humble, and true to friends (no matter how awkward she was with it).

-Applejack is tough and strong... enough said,

Twilight- Reminded me of my friends from school, laughed at the similiarities.

Rainbow- Meh at first, but I see her as an awesome character now.

Fluttershy- I liked her from the start, reminds me of myself when meeting new people.

Applejack- Meh at first, but I have come to like her.

Pinkie- I thought she was slightly overpowering with her personality, but now enjoy her antics.

Rarity- Your average fancy lady sterotype, now I see she is much more than that and is my favorite character! :3

Twilight - Main Character, seems to be grumpy and annoyed, but eventually learns friendship.

My view on her now, comedy, egghead, awesome.

Pinkie Pie- Annoying goofball.

Now, TOTALLY AMAZING GOOFBALL.

Applejack- Tied to tradition and family, westerner, pretty strong.

Now, a character who deserves more screen time for me to judge!

Rainbow Dash- jerk, showoff, yet loyal. Wannabe hotshot.

Now, the hotshot she says she is. No, even better than she says she is! Still a bit showoff, but not as much as I thought.

Rarity- Fashion pony. It was pretty unique though. I got two impressions. Rarity, the talkative fashion pony. And Rarity, the cute, generous fashion pony. Yes I think her shorter tail and how she seemed was pretty cute.

Now, well, she is more of a drama queen than I thought, but she is funny. Though she makes terrible choices, she corrects them.

Fluttershy- Shy, nobody can really talk to her properly. She's sweet and fearless if needed. Sometimes unexpected to become chatterful.

Now, most adorable character, personsl favorite. A bit lack of common sense, but learns. Took some time to pay attention, but she eventually got adorable after I noticed her more.

I think my views of them changed mostly for Pinkie and Rarity.

Hey there! I created this to discuss how everyone felt about the individual characters of the mane 6 from the first impressions they got when they saw them. Since I'm sure as you watched the episodes like me, your opinions and thoughts on them gradually changed.

Just gonna jump straight in and express how I felt about the mane 6.

To start with, when I first saw Twilight, I got the vibe that she was smart. There's no doubt about that. I also felt a sense of leadership in her, like she was THE main character of the show which I gradually changed my opinion of as the episodes went on. As the episodes went on (even into season 2), I realised that even she makes mistakes sometimes and needs others' help in order to get the job done. She can sometimes be a know-it-all but in the end, she doesn't intend to be one. She just knows a lot and wants to realise her potential to the fullest.

Pinkie Pie, I fell in love with her the instant I saw her. She was just a cute, energetic explosion of energy and randomness that I couldn't help but love from the very beginning. She still leaves that impression on me now.

Applejack, when I first saw her, I thought she was pretty cool. She was strong and hard-working, had a cool family and was pretty talented when it came to anything to do with apples. As the episodes went on though, I began to realise how tough she could be on others without trying to empathise and how she can be pretty stubborn at times and refuse others' help even when she desperately needed it.

Rainbow Dash, to start with, I just thought she was gonna be a stereotypical tomboy who was arrogant. But my opinion of her began to change pretty quickly when I realised that she could be girly, she wasn't arrogant and that she'd do anything for her friends.

Rarity however was the only one who I thought of in a fairly negative way from my first impressions. I assumed she'd be judgemental, materialistic and selfish a lot of the time until I realised just how opposite of that she actually is. Rarity was actually nice, generous and offered to sympathy to those who deserved it. She can be unfair at times without even realising it so she can kind of be represented as a false villain.

And finally, Fluttershy. To start with, I thought she was really awkward. I thought I'd find her shyness cute but my first impression of her wasn't quite that. As the episodes went on and she had the confidence to talk to her friends now, but she still had her awkward moments (along with cute shy moments). As she began to show her true self, I started to think of her almost as if she had some sort of darkness inside of her that she keeps at bay by not wanting to talk to others. I only think this because in the few scenes where she stands up for herself or just simply doesn't agree with someone else, she kind of overreacts or goes to an extreme which may otherwise upset someone else without her even trying to do so.

So what were your initial thoughts on the mane 6? And how did they change as you progressed through the episodes and began to learn more about them such as family and hobbies behind their personality and appearance?

Is it bad that I really can't fully remember exactly what I first thought of each of the mane 6 when I first started watching the show? And that wasn't that long.

I'm so horrible at remembering anything >_>.

So yeah I can't really say anything on this.

Twilight Sparkle - Egghead, reminded of the vampire movies, my big brother, etc.

Applejack - I thought she was a boy.

Rainbow Dash - I thought she was a boy as well.

Pinkie Pie - Socially awkward.

Rarity - Uptight.

Fluttershy - Has a sore throat.

Spike - Spike channel.

This was what I was thinking at first.

Twilight: Pony Hermione Granger

Applejack: pretty cool I guess

Rainbow Dash: ROFL that's awesome!

Fluttershy: strangely cute

Rarity: I dunno if I'm going to like this character

Pinkie Pie: will she ever stop talking?

And if I could respond to these impressions now

Twilight: you were pretty spot on

Applejack: Merely pretty cool? You will be punished for this.

Rainbow Dash: You haven't seen the half of it

Fluttershy: again, you haven't seen the half of it

Rarity: no, you're not going to like this character, you're going to love her and there's nothing you can do about it

Pinkie Pie: no she won't stop talking, and you're not going to want her to

(this was when I was a hater, those many months ago.)

Twilight: nerd, needs a social life, knows too much

Pinkie Pie (when she first meets twilight): O.o all twilight said was "hi" and you run away. You make no sense.

Rainbow Dash: high ego, careless, lazy (also, for the longest time, since I would only watch it on YouTube and I could skip the intro [and I did], I thought she was a guy. It wasn't until maybe episode 8 or 9 did I watch the intro and realize: "... HE'S A SHE?!?!...awk...waaard...")

Rarity: oh, no... Really? ... They just HAD to include the drama queen.

Applejack: OH MY GOODNESS!!! REDNECK STEREOTYPES!!!! XD DAY HAS BEEN MADE!!!

Fluttershy: she is able to teach birds to sing?! Cool... Wait, did she just push twilight out of her way JUST so she could see spike? That's... Kinda obsessive.

Pinkie Pie (party): O.O is she... Drunk or something?! Seriously, even I am not THAT hyper in real life. Shees, you're annoying the main character for crying out loud! Just try to be calm, please!!

Twilight: instantly understood her, particularly before she made all those friends. ^_^ Apprehensive, but empirical and businesslike. Not a social butterfly. And extremely cute. I knew I was going to like her.

Applejack: I thought she seemed stereotypical and talked too much. She seemed really nice but not very bright, and being around her would tire me out. I came to like her a lot better as the show went on, however.

Rarity: girly-girl holdover from the 80's era. No depth and not very dependable unless you wanted a makeover. I was wrong about her, too. ;)

Rainbow Dash: instant love. She was my favorite before I saw the first episode. "So that's how she talks...and that's what she does...and that's how her flying looks! And that's why she is best pony!!!"

Pinkie Pie: some kind of local emcee or master of ceremonies for Ponyville? But I quickly learned she just throws parties for the fun of it and has a hip and bubbly personality.

Fluttershy: I just sat there hypnotized by her first scene. She was so shy she couldn't even get her name out, and the more awkward the conversation became the worse she felt. I've been there, many times. Then she suddenly went nuts over Spike and I burst out laughing. I thought I would understand Fluttershy perfectly just because of the shyness, but she's still a somewhat mysterious character for me.

Twilight - Goody two-shoes, study freak.

Pinkie Pie - I'm really sorry to all of you pinkie fans.. but this is just my opinion. Pinkie pie is a weird hyper 6 year old crazy freaky pony that I am scared of. :X I feel bad for her though that everypony that does not know her thinks she is awkward and crazy and scarily screwy in the head, plus she is oblivious to the fact that she is embarassing herself sometimes.

Applejack - "Faithful and strong" definitely, but she has no flaws, What gives? Big fan of her though :D

Rarity - DRAMA QUEEEEEEN? :P

Rainbow Dash - Self-righteous showoff. I LIEK IT :D Really good character that has a sole ambition, too.

Fluttershy - She's shy.. but shes SO CUTE :3 still prefer vinyl or applejack
