Which pony could single-handedly take on, or defeat Discord?

Only Sombra can really be argued to stand a chance, and even then, he is fighting an uphill battle.

I think that if Discord was seriously trying to win, he could defeat anyone and anything that gets in his way, save the Elements of Harmony (and if he's reformed now, would those even work against him?) The only pony that could even survive a minute against him would be either Celestia or Twilight (and possibly Sombra, we don't really get to see quite how far his magic goes. Sure, he made a kingdom disappear, but Discord changed made it rain chocolate milk from cotton candy clouds. And built a giant deck of cards. And made pigs fly. And drank a chocolate milk of glass.), but I don't think they would last very long. I don't think he'll be fighting them anytime soon though since he's reformed (hopefully).

 

He can bend time, space, reality and basically everything else. He represents chaos itself, always changing. In Return Of Harmony, he could raise the sun and moon without blinking an eye. That's awesome. I really think it would be cool if sometime during S4 we got to see the full extent of Discord's powers. I think that would be the most epic thing ever. Seriously, guys, make it happen.

Pinkie Pie might have a shot, if she pulls out something obnoxiously and unrealistically random.

 

Chrysalis, if she had a decent amount of love to feed off of, might stand a chance against Discord, maybe.

 

As an afterthought, Cadance MIGHT be able to pull it off.

None of them, since the "power of friendship" thing is kind of Equestria's main line of defense. All six need to be present for them to have any power to defeat the god of chaos, so single-handed (hoofed) combat is out of the question.

A single pony taking on Discord in a fight would absolutely lose. Not only is he immensely powerful, he's also a lot cleverer than most ponies on the show. If he was only defeated by a. Celestia and Luna working together and b. all of the Mane 6 working together then there is no chance of any one pony beating him on their own.

I would say either Pinkie Pie, any of the other villains, or Celestia.  Or maybe Luna.  Pinkie, because she rivals his reality-bending powers with ones of her own without even  trying, unlike him.  And you know why any of the others I said could  beat him- Except maybe Luna.  Not so sure, it depends on circumstances, I guess.

Fluttershy...Eh. I dunno. I never though the 'reforming' Discord episode was that good anyway.

 

Twilight would get all pissed and lose it most likely.

 

Applejack would try to lasso him and get turned into a puppy or something.

I do agree with you there, that episode is a good example of his raw power.

The Elements of Harmony as far as I can tell have no power on their own, only when combinded do they have a power.

 

And as for can a single pony defeat Discord? No, not even a group of ponies really. UNLESS they posses the Elements.

 

My headcannon for defeating Discord and why only the Elements of Harmony can defeat him is because they sort of counteract Discord.

 

Discord is an embodiment of Chaos and Disharmony. Chaos and Disharmony is the opposite of Harmony. Which is what the Elements of Harmony represent.

 

Therefore, the only way Discord ,who is basically immortal, can be defeated is by neutralizing him with the powers of Harmony. Its like adding a base to an Acid, to make it neutral, thats how I see it.

 

Otherwise, hes basically immortal to any other powers, sure you could fight him a bit, but he wouldn't actually be able to be defeated, just held up a little.

 

We really haven't even seen him get hurt by any other power besides the Elements, much less defeated.

 

So yeah I say no, only the 6 Elements of Harmony Combined and used against Discord can defeat him.

Nopony. Discord would Arrebaderch them all. He is the best villain by far, and he wouldn't be defeated by one little pony. That would just not be his style. He lost once, but that was to all of the mane six.
