gaming 2DS Thoughts?

So I have recently found out about Nintendo's new redesign of the 3DS which is called the 2DS. It is basically a 3DS just without the 3D.

I really don't have much thoughts on this, but my only concern is the clamshell, because you can't close it and put it in your pocket, which I always do.

Like the title says, what are your thoughts on this?

I agree with the user on Reddit that said this is a good idea. It was very clever of Nintendo to release it a few days before the newest generation of iOS products were announced. Parents would compare the prices of entertainment products for their children and opt for the much friendlier 2DS. I'm certainly not going to get one, but I think it's a good concept and it should go relatively well.

On one hand, it probably has one of the ugliest designs imaginable and the fact that it doesn't fold won't help.On the other hand, dat price point

This is only being done to please those silly parents who are all like "ZOMG 3D HURTS KID'S EYEBALLS" and stuff.

...which to be honest with you I am totally fine with. I've been wanting to play kid icarus uprising with my nephews for the looooongest time.

So, it's a 3DS without the 3D?

Doesn't that just make it an S?

I dunno. I don't like the design much, what with the layout of the stick and the d-pad and whatver. But I think it could be good. and Cheap.

What idiot in charge of design thought that removing the clam shell would be a good idea for a system that large? Sorry, I just can't get over that.

Overall, I think this is pretty stupid. You can already disable the 3D in the parental control options! Read the manual if you're that concerned for your poor kid's eyes, I'm sure you can take the five minutes to set that up.

The only appeal I can see is the cheapness, but it certainly comes at a price of portability (something sort of important for a handheld.)

Curse you, autocorrect!

I have seen this, I would say it's good, but there are some problems with it.

  • Despite being 2D, you can do the same to a 3DS just by turning off the 3D.
  • I don't like how you can't fold it, seems weird for a DS to me.
  • The design looks a bit stiff to handle rather than a regular 3DS.
  • It looks like a vertical Game Gear.

The only good thing I can say about is that you can buy it cheaper, but that's about it.

Pros-                                                                                    Cons-

~It plays just about every DS game there is                         ~It doesn't flip closed, so when you travel it takes up more space

~you can connect with it                                                       ~I thought that the 3D thing was better than 2D

~New design                                                                         ~It's more of a step down from 3DS in my opinion

~Cheaper                                                                             ~Buttons are in a weird place

~Can't play any Gameboy games on it

Well, that's...interesting. It looks cool, I'll give it that; but the $50 price difference between it and the 3DS doesn't seem to be quite enough IMO to justify its existence.

It might be a good thing for younger consumers, so parents might see it as a good thing due to the price and the lack of 3D in general. And maybe that really is a good thing. They will buy it and it might be sold quite often.

But what I don't understand is that Nintendo wonders why they don't sell as many Wii Us as they thought they would and why the fanbase is not buying as many games anymore as it used to do and at the same time they're doing this, instead of adapting the same system seller tactics as Microsoft and Sony. They trail behind. This won't help Nintendo to solve their problems.

I don't get it.

I wouldn't be surprised if the 2DS will be sold well while the overall game sales don't increase. I guess the new Pokemon games in October will help to sell the 2DS, but this is just a rather short period.

Oh look, a wedge of cheese with a screen and buttons. How charmingly rustic.

I actually got my 2DS early, I have a picture as proof.

I got mine in Cheddar but I heard they will also come in Gouda.

I have mixed feelings about this. If it was released a lot earlier, maybe less than a year after the release of the 3DS, when all of us didn't already own a 3DS even though we can't take the 3D, I guess it would make sense. We all know that some people can't take the 3D, but since the 3D on the 3DS can be turned off anyway, (also with parental controls adding to the matter) this thing just seems absolutely unnecessary. I quite like the concept of the design and purpose, but honestly. Since the 3DS already came out about 2 years ago, the only good I can see in this is the possible decrease in price.

Well I must say that I like how you can play both 3DS and DS games on it. And I honestly don't care about the 3D. I kinda prefer 2D actually. Though, the design is ugly and which stupid person decided to remove the ability to fold it?

I just can't fathom why the heck they're making this, it's just soooooooo bad. I mean, the lack of a hinge might stop kids from breaking the thing too easily, but other than that it's just bad and ugly, just no.

Well as long as it still has the eShop/VC of course you can play some Game Boy games on it, thing is though who would want to... :/

When i first read the news i questioned if it was fake, and i thought the design was quite strange.

But then after doing more reading about it i realized that its not all that bad, for $130 and being released the same day as Pokemon X and Y it could sell very well to families with young children. Its even been said by Reggie Fils Aime its being marketed to children 5-6 years old. This also could sell to people who don’t want 3D at all but want to play 3DS games.

Its design looks odd at first although reports from people that had hands-on time with the system say it is comfortable to use. You always hear of people breaking the hinges on DS/3DS systems so the hinge-less design could make it more durable for these people. Now one thing i still find strange though is the mono audio, sure you get stereo from headphones but not sure why a second speaker is missing as there seems to be plenty of space for it.

One thing i worry is that people may think its a different system from the 3DS or DS. Hopefully its advertised and marketed good enough to try to avoid confusion.

I have no plans to purchase one as i already have both a 3DS and 3DS XL in my possession, i see nothing wrong with people purchasing one, it seems just as usable as a 3DS just you know, without the 3D. I kinda feel like people are overreacting to something not marketed to them.

This thing is obviously marketed towards the younger generations who are prone to not take care of their game devices. The hinges on a DS make it incredibly easy to break so taking that out will make it safer for kids to drop and stuff without breaking it.

Only thing is, as my friend on another forum pointed out, it's the 2DS and there's likely gonna be a lot of stupid people and unknowledgable parents looking for 2DS games on the shelf and not finding any because they don't realize it's just a 3DS without 3D and folding. It has every bit of functionality of the 3DS otherwise though from online shops to backwards compatibility with the DS.

Plus it's cheap.

Edit: @ Y u gotta ninja everything I just said?

If I had to say something that was like this, is that now, FLAT is now part of FUTURE. I mean they redesigned way to much, a normal style just like the DSi to be the 2DS would be better, not all flat.

... OK perfectly reasonable but take like me for instance, I play AR games on my 3DS with the hinges out which makes it conformable for me to roam around, but on the 2DS, it would be hard, so it may have good or bad causes to games.

That's agreed, but with the same 3DS layout flattened (just like a steam roller would) would make it harder to play games even on the 2DS between the 3DS.

Thats all I have about this 2DS (the 3DS deformed grandson)  >_>

I have a feeling that this will turn out like the Gameboy Micro and that mini-Wii thing; quickly forgotten, then sold on eBay for high prices.

Seriously though, I don't get it. The 3DS' 3D feature can be locked so it can't be used at all, has a smaller, more compact design, lots of colors (Purple!), and has the same sized screen as the 2DS.

I do like the design of the 2DS, and the price drop is pretty good. If I didn't already have a 3DS, I would probably get this version.

It's not particularly any different from any other electronic device. There's ones made for the pros who know what to look for and the ones made for the uninitiated who wouldn't know what to look for in a good gaming system if they tried. Plus the fact that it's child-safe is gonna be a HUGE plus for Mario Moms (note: gaming equivalent to Soccer Moms)

Are you fucking serious, Nintendo? Like, really?

This is a horrible idea. Just its name makes it sound unappealing and I have a feeling it'll sell terribly on the market.

Why not just make an upgraded, sleeker 3DS with the option of turning 3D off? I'm not sure if you could do that with the original 3DS, but it really is the best way to deliver that feature.

The 3DS' 3D is entirely optional in the first place. On top of the slider which can turn the 3D up and down there's a child lock on the system that prevents it from being turned on at all at the will of the parents.

Ugh, Nintendo and it's "unique/strange" inventions. I didn't see this coming. To me, it looks like a more advanced version of the Game Boy Advanced due to it not being able to fold. Like a user mentioned above, it feels like a downgrade from a 3DS. You can already tell you loose some of the unique features the 3DS has to offer.

Best thing it has is being backwards compatible with previous DS titles. Would have been a lot better if you can play your gameboy advanced games IMO.

Nintendo wants to make a device for little kids to protect the eyes under 7. Parents nowadays are over protected. WAY TO GO NINTENDO. YOU ARE A GENIUS.

That's what child locks are for in the first place but you know how non-techy people are. They can't find the settings menu so they gotta have it even SIMPLER.
