Opinions on Classical, 80's, and Modern music

Well classical music is something I definitely don't mind hearing, but I wouldn't say it's a preference. I like a few rock/metal bands from the 80's. I hate mainstream music today. I like some modern rock/metal though.

My opinion on classical, 80s, and modern music is that I feel that each era of music had their ups and downs so it could be easy for some people to choose their favorite era of music without looking at the cons that each era has. The point is, I really do enjoy listening to a lot of classic 80s songs and when I'm bored I listen to modern music. So if someone's opinion different from mine, so be it.

Most mainstream music today is incredibly boring to me, it just sounds like the same few notes and chords over and over again. There is some good stuff but it is a lot harder to find than it should be, you have to wade through mountains of crap. 80's has crap as well but it has alot more good stuff but classical beats them both hands down, it laid the foundation for modern music. Even rap/hip hop and heavy metal have some classical influence in them.

Yeah mainstream music today really just isn't my thing. It's annoying how it's literally all over the place and I can't get rid of it

Eeyup  I agree that alot of music today has classical influence. classical music is something I enjoy listening to on days when I'm just downright bored because it kind of relaxes me.

I frankly don't care about when music is made typically, i'll be totally honest in saying that I enjoy modern music, aswell as music made back in the 80's and whatnot.

The year the music was made doesn't really matter to me frankly.

I'll be honest i do like some of even the more popular songs modern days, but i do like 80's stuff or 90's stuff or whatever, as long as it appeals to me enough.

To me music is music, its just whether it catches my ears interest.

I do think that older music can sometimes be a bit over hyped, due to nostalgia and the like, but there is lots of good stuff in it.

Of course i don't think all modern music sucks or something, because i like a good bit of it.

Overall, i think music is alot about tastes, which is what makes its so incredibly unique, in that two people don't always like the same music.

Music is awesome in general though, whether 80's 90's modern, or whatever.

Classical music is nice. I personally love instrumentals. I wouldn't mind listening to classical music every now and then, but I prefer the modern day orchestral and soundtrack music to listen to. It just seems more complex and with more depth into the 'spirit' of the music. Especially since most soundtracks and instrumental mixes today have encompass more modern day instruments, such as guitar, synthesizer, along with the timeless classic instruments; violin, piano, wind instruments, etc.

80s music is nice. Though I don't prefer to listen to it all the time, it's nice to listen to once I'm in the mood. It has a lot of beat to it, and that's also the era where I believe the synthesizer got first introduced. I like some bands/artists of that era such as Duran Duran, Madonna, and Bee Gees. :P

Modern Music, I don't personally like. Only on extremely rare occasions will I hear a modern day song I can enjoy and find catchy. Lyrics and music are not taken as seriously anymore, and their mostly produced for the money now.

Though there's some rock bands of today that I love to listen to, like Skillet, Red, Breaking Benjamin, Three Days Grace, etc. Sadly they are not considered mainstream by society for some reason.

It's totally jank. :/

The mainstream music on the radio sucks like 80-90% of the time. :P

So yeah. That's my overall opinion on the three genres you listed. :P

Classical: I'm not a fan of it, but it's nice bachground music. (Yes, I seriously just made that joke.)

80's: There was a lot awful music back then like Bon Jovi and Yes. But there was also a lot of great stuff like The Pixies and Fugazi.

Modern Music: Same as 80's but TBH, there's a lot more good music nowadays than there ever was in the past. Plus, music is A LOT more diverse today than it was in the 80's.

IMO:90's>00's>80's

Most mainstream music today is incredibly boring to me, it just sounds like the same few notes and chords over and over again.

Yeah mainstream music today really just isn't my thing. It's annoying how it's literally all over the place and I can't get rid of it

Mainstream music has always been garbage though, The Backstreet Boys are just as bad as One Direction. Oh, and the 80's were filled with garbage.

There is some good stuff but it is a lot harder to find than it should be, you have to wade through mountains of crap.

I'm always finding new stuff to listen to ._.

Exactly.

But there's so much great stuff today :c

Depending on what you mean by classical, i can take it or leave it no opinion, but talking about 60's and 70's thats what i was mainly brought up on, bands like Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Pink Floyd was my childhood, while my father jammed mostly 80 one hit wonder crap down my throat with a few good exemptions, he does like Boston. Most 80's music I can do without theres only a few standouts like Guns N Roses and I always like Phil Collins.

90's of course lots of good music like the only rap i can stomach (NWA, Biggie) and of course my personal favorite band Korn(turn your flamdars on) and modern eh I rather just listen to Lamb Of God In Flames, Children Of Bodom then listen to most mainstream music now a days.

I'm sure someone said it before me, the best music doesnt get radio play most the music i find is either thanks to what people have posted on here or complete accident

Of course these are my personal opinions only and only reflect me, if anyone doesnt like it, yet it go just an opinion

What? I always thought those bands were super mainstream (and awful)

But anyways, here's one of my favorite modern bands.

I believe that good and bad music existed in all times.

The 60's for example were an amazing decade, they gave us bands such as The Velvet Underground and Pink Floyd

The 70's gave us Pink Floyd in their prime and Led Zeppelin

The 80's gave us such bands as Sonic Youth, U2, and.....some other bands I can't remember[insert Rush]

The 90's gave us grunge; Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains; also Radiohead, the Smashing Pumpkins, and The Foo Fighters. Also expanded U2

The 00's expanded greatly on Pearl Jam and Radiohead's work

The 10's are about to give us another Pearl Jam album, Lightning Bolt, and Radiohead will probably return from their break some time this decade.

Music is getting better, if anything. You just have to stray from the times mainstream to find music that is really good and will endure.

There are many good bands that I did not list

I have no opinion on Classical because I don't listen to it

Man do I hate music stereotypes

2000, Light Years from Binuaral by Pearl Jam

1979, Comfortably Numb from The Wall by Pink Floyd

Every decade has their up and downs, like some people have already stated. I personally dislike the idea of restricting myself to one decade. I just like good music so I just stick to whatever I like no matter when it was produced

Most mainstream music today is incredibly boring to me, it just sounds like the same few notes and chords over and over again.

The same few notes and chords over and over can be very fun at times

Just saying

Honestly, it all depends on which band/singer/composer you are talking about. Each era had some amazing singers/bands/composers while some had some-not-so-great singers/bands/composers. I do enjoy classical music for the most part. Just because something is mainstream doesn't mean it's bad or it doesn't mean it's great, it all just depends on who you're talking about.

I love classical music! My granddad (RIP) was an incredibly talented opera singer, and my grandmum a concert pianist!

My parents and I were living with them for the first years of my life while my dad was getting his degree, so I was constantly around it.

Classical is such a beautiful and underrated genre...while it's not for everyone, I find it to be one of the most emotional driving genres of any type of music. It's sort of one of the reasons I enjoy Electronic music...the melodies, the buildups, the climaxes, the drive...all that is found in classical as well! It's definitely one of my top favs...

Onto the 80's...I've never been much of a mainstream guy...but the 80's mainstream (even though hit and miss at times) was pretty awesome. it just had that special "vibe" to it...the signature electroish drums, the vocal processors, the electric piano riffs/ballads...

There were some great hits back then that still hold up today..."The Promise" by When in Rome is one of my all time favourites...

As for the modern mainstream...I'm not a fan really...it takes much to impress me with the modern scene these days. A lot of it just sounds the same...really watered down pop music. I loved the 90's pop music simply for the instrumentals, and the catchy melodies/riffs...but now, even that's been eliminated from the equation...don't get me wrong though, occasionally a gem will slip into the malestrom...but they're very few and far between IMO.

But yeah, those are my general thoughts...

They seem like random choices, but you said you had a reason, so I'll shut up.

I've made it pretty obvious throughout many posts on this forum over the years, but I love Classical. There's just some quality about it that pop music can never quite touch. The different periods of Classical music are so diverse, and the many different feelings and atmospheres the types of classical music can bring about is unmatchable IMO. Renaissance choral music makes me feel like I'm in a heavenly realm (although I do not believe in such things, of course. lol). Baroque music makes me feel like I've taken a trip in time. French Impressionism is so atmospheric, and takes me to other places. For example, Debussy's Submerged Cathedral paints such vivid imagry of its subject matter, that it's almost as if I could have pictured it without having even ever heard the title. It's not impossible for pop music to reach such levels, but it is remarkably rare. The vast majority of pop artists aren't interested in making this kind of effect. And I don't hold it against them. It just raises up Classical genres as being something very special, and far and away from the "boring" that people try to label them as. *sigh*

Then we go to the 80's? Ehhh... Um... The 80's are by far my least favorite decade of "Classic Rock". There are plenty of gems, but overall I do not like the movements in 80's music, such as synthesized instruments. Use real brass/saxophone or go home. There IS music with mostly/entirely electronic instruments that I love, but it really hardly ever comes about in the 80's. The 80's to me are just best described by the word "cheesy".

Modern Music. Well, I've not been particularly fond of what I've heard on the radio lately when I have to listen to mainstream radio. The rock seems very bland, while the pop isn't even catchy. Autotune is a very bad thing.

But I don't want to come off as one of those everything mainstream or modern haters, because that's not at all what I am. I liked plenty of "mainstream" from the early and mid 00's. I don't listen to modern mainstream radio stations regularly, so I honestly don't even have that much exposure to it. But I will say there is a modern band called Streetlight Manifesto to remind me that music can be just as awesome today.

Well that's your opinion, and I greatly respect that. :P

I wouldn't say they're exactly mainstream. They're common bands to like, but not mainstream, at least that's how I see it. I think of contemporary radio stations whenever the word "mainstream" comes to mind.

And I don't ever really hear them on the radio at all. Maybe once in a blue moon, but nothing more. Instead I'll usually hear crap like Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, and other monstrosities playing on the contemporary radio stations that just make me want to rip my ears out.

I guess to be fair as possible, there's some modern beach radio stations that I'll occasionally listen to. Usually the music on there is quite relaxing and nice to listen too. ^_^

^But overall, this is all just my preference. To be honest, I don't really like the songs that you posted, but I can respect that it is your personal preference and taste.

I personally can't stand modern music, assuming that by modern music you mean all the God forsaken electronic and pop music. But other than that i like 80's music, The Police is one of my favorite bands. But i for one am more of a technical metal person :P so i got a wide range ^_^

Yes repetition can be good if done right, but done right is the key here. When nearly every song sounds like some cheap ripoff of each other than I think that is a huge problem. The music industry has gotten so commercialized that it has become a product first and an art form second which is really a shame because there are a lot of talented people that aren't getting the recognition they deserve. The music industry has been commercialized for a while granted, but at least back in the 50's and 60's the "mainstream" stuff was actually pretty good. And there was some good mainstream stuff in the 80's but not quite as much as back then but at least more than now.

Those bands are actually extremely mainstream. A lot of playtime on the radio doesn't equal mainstream success, sales and popularity do. Since all of those bands top the charts (Skillet has one album certified platinum and one certified gold, while TDG got two albums which has been certified platinum and one certified gold. Red has been nominated for two grammies.)

The only reason these bands doesn't get as much radio playtime as Miley Cyrus or Lady Gaga is because they're not as radio-friendly. TDG is a bit too angsty to the played on radio, but the rest gets moderate playtime from what I've heard

Also, how can a person not like mewithoutYou? Dawn just showed you their harder-to-grasp album

Like Kyouko just said, those bands have sold gold and platinum albums making them nowhere near underground. I've heard TDG being played on the radio before. And I'm pretty sure those bands have several million views on YouTube. And I guess it's a shame that you don't like Kvelertak and mewithoutYou, oh well...

Hey so I'm curious. What are your opinions on Classical, 80's and basically Modern music today. Mainstream mostly

Classical: I enjoy being sophisticated at times, so music like this is always pleasing and well orchestrated.

80's: Without a doubt one of my favorite era's of music!

Modern: Besides mainstream, there's a whole lot of underrated and underground music that get's ignored due to the success most mainstream music gets....

Well, I quite enjoy Classical music, but it's not my favorite style.

For 80's... what about 70's music? I am a huge prog rock maniac, I love this kind of music, I just can't live without it..

And I hate today's mainstream music, it's so plain, depressive... :/
