Does Luna go to sleep during the day?

There are a number of instances in the show in which it is suggested that Luna looks after other ponies during the night. One such instance can be seen in S3E06 ("Sleepless in Ponyville"), when she helped Scootaloo face her fears.

In that episode, Luna explains "that it is her duty as the princess of the night to step into ponies' dreams."

So, that being the case, can it be assumed that Luna does not sleep during the night since she has duties to fulfill? If she doesn't sleep at night, then does she sleep during the day? Or does she only, perhaps, have to perform these nocturnal duties periodically?

Thoughts?

Well, if Luna has to sleep during the day, that would mean that Celestia has to sleep during the night, and therefore wouldn't be able to attend the Grand Galloping Gala. I personally think that neither of them sleep as such, but they have to rest when they exert themselves (as Luna says to Celestia in A Canterlot Wedding) Or alternatively, she does sleep, but has the power to enter other pony's dreams while she does it (kind of like a permanent lucid dream... you can have lucid dreams and still wake up refreshed, because your actual body is sleeping) Maybe later episodes will clarify things.

It's actually quite an interesting question.

Hasnt been shown that if the 2 big alicorns sleep at all, Celestia did take over Luna's job when she banished her so I guess it 's complety up to her how she spends ger free time

Ask Tom The Pimp, He knows about how every mare in Equestria "Sleeps"(if you know what I mean.)

Honestly, I do not know if they sleep at all. My guess they sleep like five hours a day or something

Once saw a pic someone drew of Celestia 'sleeping' and its kinda creepy in a way,

She sleeps sat up with her eyes open but they look empty, also her mane doesn't flow in this state, looks slightly Pinkamina-ish as it just hangs down.

I know Luna doesn't get much screen time during the show but when she was on screen it was during the day most of the time. You have to also remember she isn't mortal so she probably doesn't need to tend to mortal needs like us. For example sleeping.

Also, when she's shown awake it tends to be during a time of the day or night when most other ponies are awake. The only time she's been shown awake when other ponies are sleeping is that one episode when Scootaloo and her companions went camping and Scootaloo was awake at night by herself.

That episode showed us that Luna is awake at night to watch over ponies when they dream at night. That in no way signified that Luna sleeps during the day because she's been shown awake during the day like most other ponies.

My conclusion, she doesn't need to sleep at all unless she has no duties to tend to.

I skimmed the posts...

But has it occured she does her "dream" duties while sleeping herself? That is how other ponies enter dreams. I am sure that is a requisite for her to enterthem.

One simply does not manifests physically into an abstract environment.

So my conclusion is this. She sets the moon in motion.

We have only seen them actually needed to raise and set said moon/sun. Maybe they dont actually have to magic it across the sky. If that is the case, then she raises the moon, goes to sleep, does dream stuff, wakes up, moon set.

I think she does, it makes sense, because she has to be up all night touring other ponies' dreams. Besides, we only saw her in the show during night time events, so in my mind that means that the only time we could see her.

It is possible that she enters other ponies dreams while sleeping herself, but I prefer to think that Luna sleeps during the day, assuming the Princesses need to sleep in the first place.During The Canterlot Wedding, she takes over guard duty from Celestia at nightfall, meaning they can't stand there all day and need some form of rest.  Whether or not they need sleep can be debated, but they obviously need some form of relaxation, and it makes sense that if Luna is active at night she will rest during the day. One possibility is that instead of sleep they do a sort of meditation, giving their mind and body an opportunity to rejuvenate, without them needing to enter the vulnerable state of sleep.

I would like to point out that in The Crystal Empire, Shining Armor states that Cadence hasn't had a chance to sleep, meaning that Alicorns either need sleep in general or need it only when they have magically exerted themselves. There is a chance Luna and Celestia are exempt from the need for sleep, but raising a celestial body seems magically exerting, so they may need sleep on a regular basis anyway.

It's a great question and I'd love to have the writers give us a "day in the life" episode for Luna and Celeatia. My head cannon was that she did generally sleep during the day, but would and could be awake during the day when needed. In the video "Children of the Night" Celestia is shown sleeping (her guards too!) while Luna is out and about. Of course it's a fan thing but still a cool video.

Welll I think Luna could sleep sometimes, but she probably can go out at day. If not, would it be the same for Celestia? Why should Celestia be allowed to go out day and night, while Luna can't? :P Unfair!! Maybe in S4 They will have some day scenes with Luna.

That is probably why she didn't attend the wedding in A Canterlot Wedding and couldn't attend the Grand Galloping Gala. Since, Luna has to control the moon at night time and she is only active during the night it would make sense for her to sleep during the day. She has to keep her body refreshed for the night, hopefully the writers will talk about this in the future.

Well, she and Celestia are practically goddesses, so perhaps they can eat, drink, and sleep for pleasure, the sake of being polite to others, or needing to rest from physical injuries after suffering from powerful magical attacks.

But, it isn't required for them to continue to live...after all Luna/Nightmare Moon survived on the moon for over a thousand years with no food or water.

That, or Luna could be an insomniac suffering from a particularly severe case and is just really good at hiding it from others.

  • 3 weeks later...

Idk, frankly some episodes portray one, and others the other.

I think that it doesn't make much sense if luna sleeps in the day and watches dreams at night as much, possible, but i feel like maybe she just sleeps during the night and watches dreams in her sleep.

However the way things work when they hand off the duty of the sun and moon like in the Season 2 finale seems to almost state that one sleeps while the other is keeping up their respective celestia body. I.E luna keeps up the moon and lets celesta sleep at night and vis versa..

but again this has inconsistancy's to.

So really i guess we just need a more clearly stated episode released. the current ones almost contradict each other frankly.

Maybe. Right now, we just don't know. Yes, we can make this assumption and back it up with logical reasoning but in the end, the show still hasn't informed us yet of whether this is true or not.

I always assumed she did, but I saw somepony elses post here saying that Celestia had to perform Luna's duties as well as her own and that made me think. Maybe neither of them do sleep as the other ponies (and us) do, but recharge their metaphorical batteries another way. Meditation, perhaps?

This is my impression of it as well. In "A Canterlot Wedding", when Luna flies in through the shield, she says to Celestia, "Rest, my sister. As always, I will guard the night." The fact that she used the word "rest" rather than "sleep" was, I feel, specifically meant to imply just that... that the Sisters may have to rest if they exert themselves, but don't actually sleep.

I think it's safe to say you could very well be right. Perhaps they have a special place within the palace that aids this?

It doesn't seem to be true for every alicorn though. Remember in "The Crystal Empire", Shining Armour tells the mane six that "Cadance hasn't slept for weeks". So she needs to sleep, despite the fact that she rules over the Crystal Empire. Perhaps it's something to do with the maturity of the alicorns or their level of magical prowess.

Well, shes in ponys dreams?

Right?  Why wouldn't she be sleeping?  I mean does she mentally transmit herself all super natural like while she's awake?

She might, but she might as well be asleep.

Maybe it tires her out so she has to loaf it all day long.
