Could another Pegasus pull off the rainbow part of a Sonic Rainboom?

According to Rainbow Dash, it's another one of those things that's supposed to have been an old mare's tale, making it SEEM like any pegasus could do it, with proper speed and powerful wings. But that just doesn't seem likely to me, given that RD is the only one seen with a rainbow mane.

Take this here. 640px-Filly_Rainbow_Dash_looking_back_S1

You can see that it seems like her MANE is what is causing the SR. Maybe it's not even an ACTUAL rainbow, but simply her speed making something like an afterimage effect from anime's like Dragonball Z. We don't know the exact mechanics of it, since it's something like a legend, so it could be a fake rainbow.

So. exhibit B

Even without a Sonic Rainboom, you can see that when she goes pretty fast, there appears to be a rainbow trailing behind her.  And Lightning Dust, who is more or less equal to Rainbow Dash in terms of speed and ability,  clearly does NOT have the same aftereffect trailing behind her, but something reminiscent of her name and mane, like lightning. So if Lightning Dust actually managed to get enough speed to pull of a sonic boom, would it still be a rainbow trailing behind her, or would it still be something similar to lightning? A Sonic Lightningboom?  It seems likely that for the few pegasi capable of extreme speed, that something similar to their manes would come out if they pulled off a sonic boom.

But that's just my opinion. What do you guys think?

I think that because this is still a cartoon, Rainbow Dash's signature move is the Sonic Rainboom. Sure maybe Lightning Dust could pull it off but Hasbro would call it something else like you said Never2muchpinkie. Remember the target age for this show is still little kids. But I think, becasue Hasbro and Lauren Faust knows about us Bronies, she might make it more appealing to us too by tweaking it a little. Yeah that would be interesting to see though...mm maybe Hasbro will do something like that

I think the reason Rainbow Dash did it was because her mane is rainbow. I think if Lightning Dust did it, the effect would be the same but it wouldn't be a rainbow. It would be her colors.

Lightning Dust would probably pull off something the "Lightning Jolt" as her signature move. The first pony to weaponize their move would RULE!

See why should they re do the same move?

I wanna see a thunder bolt do a move rainbow dash can't.

I wanna see something out of them that would make me as a fan go "ah so that's why she would still wanna join."

cause as it stands,

she's better than them.

true or false?

It's likely that it's just a dream she had as a kid that she hasn't let go of and it may have been the thoughts of one day getting to join that made her push to the level she's at.  She really admires Spitfire, so the thought of flying alongside her number one idol is probably what she's fighting for. It's also a chance for her to get lots of attention. As seen from the Grand Galloping Gala, the wonderbolts are quite popular, so it may be part of her motiivation.

At current, because of the main characters needing to save the day, the wonderbolts get put on the back burner and quickly fail in their two attempts at rescuing. However, who knows if they do have some skills Rainbow doesn't have.

When the ponies are touring the weather factory they see rainbows being made, so considering how they aren't naturally occurring in the same way that our rainbows are (at least, in places where the pegasus ponies control the weather) I think it's at least possible that the Sonic Rainboom can be done by anypony and still create the rainbow effect. Maybe it's just a coincidence that the only known pony to successfully perform one also has a rainbow-colored mane.

Well, Pinkie Pie said that a sonic rainboom occurs when a "pegasus like Rainbow Dash" flies fast enough. Some have suggested that Pinkie meant a specific and particularly rare type of pegagus i.e. one with a rainbow-coloured mane, of which Rainbow (and presumably her dad from "Games Ponies Play") is an example. Note that I personally don't ascribe to the theory, necessarily, but it has been suggested.

If you ask me the sonic rainboom is a family technique that only member of Rainbow Dash's family can do. It could be RD, great, great, great grandmother or grandfather did one a long time ago, but no other member in the family has been able to do it.

I seem to remember that when the Wonderbolts fly at high speeds, they leave trails in the air similar the Lightning Dust and Rainbow Dash's. Some members have dark, cloud-like trails (Soarin', I think, whose mane is also dark) and one has a cloudy one with lightning crackling in it. I think the trails depend soley on the ponie's colour scheme.

The trails of a pegasus are all different, much like DBZ auras. I would find it funny if Fluttershy's trail are living butterflies that come out randomly.

Other Pegsi could break the sound barrier, but not in the same manner as Dash. The rainbow effect is probably due to her mane and tail.

Also, *Slight possible season 4 spoiler*

I heard that somepony has their own twist on the signature move...

Lauren almost isn't involved in MLP anymore, she's got almost no involvement in the show anymore. She has some small position like advisor, but she isn't involved in the episodes anymore. It's the writers' jobs to make us happy now :D

I agree that the sonic rainboom could be a family technique although I think that maybe the fact that it is called a rainboom is a coincidence that rainboom sounds like rainbow and the only pegasus to pull it off had a rainboom that was rainbow coloured or, more likely it was only named the rainboom after Dashie performed it and until then it was merely known that something cool happens when you break the sound barrier.

Well remember, Pinkie Pie said in the episode, Sonic Rainboom, that the rainboom is a legendary technique that certain pegasus like RD can do. In Cutie Mark Chronicles, a young pegasus say's that the SRB is just an old mares tale. Meaning some may have seen the move done many years ago, but none have seen it done now a days.

i'm liking the idea that the rainbow part of the rainboom is just the ponies color scheme amplified to the Nth degree. That way, the sonic rainboom beign a legendary move won't have to be retconned. Perhaps in S4, we'll find out who actually pulled off the SRB. Or else I'm going to capitalize on it in my fanfiction.

Let's keep in mind that, as far as any Equestrian is concerned, RD is the only one who has ever done a Sonic Rainboom. We have no way of knowing until we see another pony break the sound barrie. Also note that the actual explosion is rainbow coloured, and not just the trail.

The 1st episode of Season 4 proved that wrong.

Twilight did a Sonic Starboom instead of a Sonic Rainboom. My conclusion is that only rainbow-related ponies are able to do the rainboom.

Actually, according to McCarthy, it was something else entirely.

Which makes sense. Her flying ability is inconsistent, but her being able to bust the sound barrier and cause something like that would have been far too much for me to buy. It'd also have left a rotten taste in my mouth. I mean, c'mon Twilight, flying tricks are best pony's job ;)

While that S4 episode wrecked loads of headcanons, it still preserves the one of mine that the rainboom isn't necessarily exclusive to ponies with rainbow manes. Not that it wouldn't make sense, but I view it more as just an impossibly hard flying trick.
