Yes they did. Buts they wouldn't want any story of them to somehow become canon. And while some like the ponies anthro'd. not everyone does. Also, considering the stuff Twilight has faced before, a high school is really the best they could come up with?

 

They could have just made a whole pony movie with sunset shimmer in it that took place somewhere new in equestria and it would have been much better instead of it being a plot that had no hope of ever working and her getting owned in 20 seconds.

Note that I'm saying all of this as someone who genuinely enjoyed the movie.

 

The plot was incredibly forced and underwhelming for something made for Friendship is Magic. The "romantic subplot" was forced and incredibly underwhelming. The songs were... decent... except for "Helping Twilight Win the Crown", which was perfect, if you ask me. Sunset Shimmer was a rather uninteresting antagonist with an incredibly flawed plan. And those are just a few of the problems.

 

As I said, I love the movie, but the hate on it is easy for me to understand.

 

Plus the fact that they had such gorgeous human designs was honestly my favorite thing in the whole movie

^What @UberAntics said. Much of the movie is atypical of what makes up the show. The plot is thin, the musical numbers are forgettable outside of Helping Twilight Win the Crown, and there is a terrible amount of cliches that bring down it's quality. Furthermore, the character development is weak, the characters outside of the Mane6 are two dimensional, and the amount of plot devices used to create twists in the plot are more like annoying knots. Overall, it's the quality that people dislike. That's merely a critique of the film on my part; I actually found the movie enjoyable and fun (I'm going into film journalism).

Well, at the time, it was just announced and hinted out of nowhere at first, that many thought it was a joke thing, until it came true, and most hated it.

 

From what I heard, it's a pointless spin off that wasn't well liked by much for plot holes, weak developments, un-catchy songs, and overall making the whole cast humans.

There was a lot more hate directed toward Equestria Girls before it was released than after. Much of it was because the plot sounded extremely cliched and a came across as another example of Hasbro meddling in the creative process. I am not saying the whole high school thing can't ever work but it has been so overdone and most cases it is not been done very well. When it was first announced while my expectations were rock bottom low I never really joined the panic party because it was after all only a spinoff that was unlikely to have a significant impact on the show. I did see it though and despite having a few flaws I did like it, but even if worse came to worse and it bombed I would have just laughed it off and moved on.

Its clunky, not well planned out, and felt rushed. But i dont hate it, quite the contrary actually. What i saw was a tangled mess, but through it i caught a glimpse of something beautiful, with golden wavy hair and eyes like the ocean.

I've expressed my dislike of the movie in other threads, but I'll try to summarize in a sentence or two:

 

It was the most pointless thing DHX has made thus far. So pointless, in fact, that the occurrences in the movie can be seen as non-canon.

 

Also, Sunset Shimmer is the worst villain ever.

Because people exaggerate when they dislike things.

 

I liked the movie but I can understand why someone wouldn't.

 

I do think that when people talk about how much they hate it, they are exaggerating. What bothers some people just doesn't bother other people in nearly the same way. I was able to look past the flaws of the movie while I was watching it.

 

Also people have different opinions about characterization. I thought it was fine for the most part. Not really sure why people thought anyone was OOC. Characters aren't static after all. I mean how would we know how Twilight would react upon running into a cute guy during a vulnerable moment of her life? We hadn't seen that until we saw the movie. I think that it would be OOC if it happened again and she totally brushed it off and didn't care. She might not necessarily react the same way but it would be OOC of her to have it happen and then never wonder about him. Know what I mean?

 

I want to do an opinion something-or-other about Twilight and Flash one of these days. Not enough room in a forum post to express that opinion.

Well I could say a lot.. but I'll just sound like everypony else here.. so why keep saying the same thing over and over? 

 

Over all the movie was not the best, but I still loved it! Great songs! some funny ass parts!

I just hate teenage movies / shows (eg: hannah montana) and while watching EQG i just feeling like watching one. When i see Sunset bulliying other people am like "ok im done with this" seeing people / animal or creature just leaves a bad feeling inside me, story wasnt good at all (i expect Twilight stand in human world more and other Ponies worry about she, then Chrysalis attack when Twilight fighting with Sunset Shimmer. After Twilight come back to Equestria found the Crystal City is under attack, release her friends free and defeat Chrysalis then found Chrysalis and Sunset was allies and planned all this maybe Discord would help them too Chrysalis vs Discord would be epic! ) but i liked the songs also it has some funny moments, i dont hate it, i even like, i gave the movie like 6.5/10.

I think many people see it as the show losing a bit of integrity. The show was always a vehicle to sell toys and such, but this movie seemed like a tad too much all at one, and seemed very much out of place for most people.

 

I think the other side of things is the movie (at least as I seem t see others say it) was an average movie, neither being very good nor very bad. Even if it ended up horrible, it would at least have gotten a The Room kind of treatment, and be viewed as comically bad, and enjoyably so. And if it ended up great, then obviously that would be good too. But it sort of ended up neither, and dissapointed a whole slew of people.

 

So I think the combination of it being kind of a sell out as well as being mediocre kind of put a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths.

Personally I wouldn't count on it. Even Pixar couldn't keep that kind of stuff up, and they can make REALLY good sequels sometimes. (Toy Story 3 was da bomb!) DHX is hardly as good as Pixar is, and more merchandise oriented too, which s kind of what made Cars 2 suck pretty bad in the first place.
