I think it's the matchups that we have a problem with here. Can you guys tell me how they came to be this way? Just saying... 

This tournament dates back to December 2013. @Sterling Crimson started with 128 characters and separated them into 16 Pots of 8 characters each. Each character had 7 matches and received points (just like we had with the Group Stages, but they only had 3 matches in these smaller groups). The top two characters from each pot of 8 advanced to the Top 32 and into the Group Stages that we finished last week. The Groups A-H were decided by draw (semi-random so as not to have the Mane 6 eliminate each other before the knockout stages or to have a group be unbalanced [like having four of the mane 6 in one group etc]). Then we had the Knockout stages, taking the winners of Groups A, C, E, & G and the Runners-up from Groups B, D, F & H on the one side of the bracket; and the Winners of Groups B, D, F, & H and the Runners-up from Groups A, C, E, & G on the other side of the bracket.

 

This is standard FIFA tournament format. And the knockout system is the same for NCAA March Madness, and most other brackets (NBA, NHL and MLB seem different because they play SO MANY matches against each team, but the bracket is the same).

Well, as some of the mane 6 get eliminated ... things can start to change. It all depends on two factors that are hard to measure.

 

1. 2nd favorite character (character order in general)

2. The voters decision to continue to vote if their favorite is kicked out.

 

Lets just say for the sake of argument that Vinyl comes from behind in this contest. Rarity is knocked out. I would continue to vote and push for another character I like. The winner of this tournament will likely be decided on the legs on voters' 2nd best Pony/character and not necessarily the best. This also is what gives characters like Luna, Discord, and Derpy some chance if enough people who feel the same way as you (and in a positive and infectious manner) push for these characters. It can have a snowball effect.

For the record, I think you did a great job with the groups; Just like in the FIFA world cup most had two teams expected to advance, and two teams with a chance to make a surprise run... Also, much like the FIFA World Cup, the matches will be A LOT harder to predict once we hit the quarterfinals... I just think that there's not as broad of an understanding of the rules since I seem to be the exception rather than the normal when the format makes perfect sense to me... Not a lot of soccer fans I guess; lol.

Which is what makes it fun; for example I believe group G was set up to advance Discord and Lyra; but in the end Big Mac took the second spot... Now, we have the group winners vs. the group runner ups; one last chance for somepony to shock the world before we get to the nitty gritty...

Well, she can just dig the gems out of the ground. The thing is though, most of these gems go directly back into her work. Says much about Rarity that she does not hoard them, but shares them with the world through her gifts and her dresses.

 

Like the giant heap of gems she found when she got her cutie mark. She did not use these gems to make herself a beautiful outfit, or used them to buy something nice for herself. She used them to make the school play truly unique and improved everyponies costumes with shining jewels!
