Question: How Much Time did EG Take in Equestria?

So, I'm not sure if this is ever answered in the movie or elsewhere, but I was wondering how much time the events of Equestria Girls take to Equestria; that is, what I'm really asking is if time in Equestria and in earth are the same.  Thanks to anyone who responds!

Nope, it's not answered. The best we have for determining the length of time passing is the 2013 Annual, and even then we have to do a lot of guessing.

 

Sunset left the pony world when Twilight had not yet received her cutie-mark (cutie-markless Twilight is seen in the background with Cadance and Shining Armor in their 'teenage' forms at one point) in the Annual. In the film, Sunset was the Princess of the Fall Formal for three years prior to Twilight showing up, according to the picture gallery.

 

Here's where we enter complete speculation, as we have to guess how much older Shining Armor is to Twilight, as the Annual implies that he and Sunset are probably close in age (as is Cadance, Lyra, and Colgate/Minuette who also appear to be contemporaries to Sunset Shimmer). If ponies age at the same rate as humans, it's likely Twilight is anywhere from five to ten years younger than Shining Armor. If that is true, then time runs at anywhere from half to a third the rate in the Humanized universe then it does in the Pony universe.

 

If you *don't* go to the Annual because it's an IDW comic and therefore not 'canon', we've got absolutely nothing to indicate the age difference between Sunset and Twilight other than Twilight had never even heard of Sunset, this supposedly other personal student of Celestia. Which likely means that Sunset left before Twilight started at Celestia's school, but it could be hundreds of years ago for all we know.

Heh. As I say in my signature, don't get your hopes up. I'm not a very good writer. My pacing is awful, as I tend to write *very* short fiction. I had to strain to not do the whole thing in ten pages. Also, according to the comments I got on the story, it appears that my idea of most of characters making automatic assumptions as to what the Sdu are, and being wrong about it, isn't particularly clear. I rewrote the first two chapters awhile back to attempt to make it clearer, but I'm not sure my edits really helped. Hopefully the version you have is the more recent, though.

 

I'm trying to get back to writing more of that, but I've got to clear through my backlog of 'stuff' I have to do first.

Fhaolan gave an interesting answer and I didn't know about the comic. We discussed time in an old thread, but we know Twilight spent about 2 1/2 days in the human world. She arrived mid-morning Wednesday and left Friday night. Now her friends and the princesses were waiting for her to reappear, but it seems unlikely they would have waited in that room for almost three days. So either time is different or they simply came back when they knew her deadline to return was approaching.

As far as Sunset Shimmer's timeline we really don't know.

Fhaolan gave a very well-explained answer. We're familiar with Twilight's time spent in the human world from the time she went in the portal and to the time she came out of the portal. As for Sunset Shimmer's timeline, maybe it's explained in the comics.

Thank you! I never had a chance to read the comics, but I do know that there was a comic connected to Sunset Shimmer's backstory and it shows everything.

As a note, I just finished re-watching Equestria Girls for my worldbuilding blog, and I made a mistake. What I thought was a picture gallery of Sunset as Princess of the Fall Formal *may* have been Sunset as various seasonal Princesses, including what they call the Spring Fling. Which means that from Sunset's point of view she may have only been in this alternate universe for a year or two, not four. Which therefore means that when the portal isn't open, the human world is running *really* slow compared to the pony world.

 

Or there's a separate gallery for her as Princess of the Spring Fling (as mentioned by Fluttershy). Hard to tell.

I've been wondering the same thing, because when Twilight goes into the mirror, her friends are right there and when she comes back, her friends are in the same place, like it's been a few hours.
