Is killing a spider a sin?

The term is venomous, and no spider will bite a human unless provoked, so leave them be and they will leave you be.

It can be unprovoked all it wants in Spider Hevean.

Not a sin per say, but still a bad idea. Spiders do nothing but good. Even putting them out can be a bad idea, depending on area, as in some places they may well die due to cold. Just leave them alone, and they will continue eating flies and moths, preventing you from be swarmed by them.

Try making that argument when it's a spider that could kill or maim me. If that bastard looks like a Brown Recluse it's going down.

Some will. There's actually some kinds of spiders that are highly aggressive and will attack anything they see.

Do you know how many bugs and things you probably kill every day without realizing just by walking?  I hardly think it as murder.  To me, bugs are a pest.  At least some of them.  If they're in my house, especially spiders, yes, I will kill them.  Do I think it as murder?  No.

I think the "threat" posed by spiders is greatly exaggerated.  There are only two, easily identified and mostly outdoor-dwelling species where I live that FOR SURE pose any real threat whatsoever, and I think the number of actual spider bites is also exaggerated.  If you're too big to eat...  They probably aren't going to bite you.  I've given a number of spiders little rides on my hand, and I gently escort them to a place of relative safety.  That being said, I don't mess with excitable, semi-large males that are with their lady friend or anything silly like that.  Most spiders are also willing to waltz into a cup or other recepticle if I just place it in their path.  If it were up to me, I'd be surrounded by the things lol.  But I live with someone who isn't overly fond of them, and also we rent, so...  Yeah a ceiling blanket of spider webs may be frowned upon xD.

True, there are some, but very few. If you are in an area known to be home to aggressive species then obviously you need to be careful, and then I think killing one could be acceptable. But not otherwise.

Have you ever seen a Brown Recluse bite?

It rots your skin from the inside out.

Hell yeah, that son of a b*tch is getting the chancla

Funnily enough, people in areas with Brown Recluses tend to be less worried about them than people in areas without them. And too often other ailments are misdiagnosed as Brown Recluse bites.

Not everyone bitten by a Brown Recluse experiences that same reaction.  The bite leaves a little tell-tale bullseye that I *think* is actually red, white, and blue.  And there are likely several harmless spider species that are mistaken for the infamous "violin" or "fiddleback" spider.  Said effect is called "necrosis," if I'm not mistaken.  Not trying to sound like I'm informing you or anything; I just like the term / saying it lol.

P.S. I've decided Phoenix Questioner is awesome for actively defending spiders lol.  Their bad reputation is undeserved!

I have had Spiders as my avatar a number of times.

But I think the main reason that spiders are disliked is because they look so different to what people are used to.

As a pet owner, I have that to think about as well. Just because I won't provoke it doesn't mean she won't and get bit.

I do live in an area with them(centrel Iowa) and we even rarely get Black Widows(though I've never seen one)

Probably.  Or people are just jealous that spiders are so darned awesome :P.  Maybe if more folk were exposed to this they'd feel differently:

Oh certainly, protecting your pets is a must.Killing any old spiders is bad, but I can agree with killing the ones that are actually harmful and pose a threat.

I kinda wondered this, considering most of us are afraid of these eight legged creatures. We could put them outside....but coming from somebody who attempted to harm a spider not too long ago. >.< I mean, it could've been poisonous for all I know. I feel bad about killing it, I always tell a spider "I'm sorry" before squashing it. u-u

Yes, I feel remorse for a freaky spider...

Is killing a spider basically murder, since we are taking it's life? Or is it necessary to ease our discomfort and possible safety?

I saw a spider in my bathroom, and I sang a whole blues song to it before drowning it in spray on conditioner and flushing it down a toilet. Then I found out that the damn thing had babies and I murdered them all. I suppose I'm a serial killer now. Oh well, it was me or it, was not going to let it murder me. Fucken spiders, I'll see them in hell.

A lot of people kill spiders etc. as they're freaked out/annoyed by them etc. I can't help but wonder if they would do the same thing to a human who freaks them out...

If it's a poisonous spider which is posing a threat to me then I would kill it...or scream. But if it's just minding its own business I think killing it is cruel.

I read that creepy damned book when I was a kid!  There was a story about...  "Harold," I think it was?  That permanently scarred me.  The art is WOW, though.

To bad they commissioned new(and severely defanged/tamed down) art for the new printings of those books.

It saddens me that later generations of children won't have the opportunity to be as disturbed as I was. :(

Especially considering that change is driving up the price of the versions with the original art(which are now out of print)

To anyone who is worried about poisonous spiders, why don't you just do a quick web search and find out which poisonous spiders live in your area and what they look like? It's probably going to be a very short list in most parts of the world, and you won't have to freak out at every spider you see from then on.

I just looked, and here are all the poisonous spiders for my area (Tennessee), the Brown Recluse and the Black Widow

That's it, just two species and they're pretty distinctive looking.

Aww you're so kind !

I thought the rule was not to kill one of your "brothers" (or another human). I think it depends how you think. If you just have to kill everything in sight (even a bug when it's not in your house), then you have a problem. It's senseless violence.
