As the title says, who are your favorite writers of the show so far?

I didn't put the ones who only wrote 1 episode.

To know who wrote what, see here.

Mines are Meghan McCarthy (obviously), Amy Keating Rogers (only good episodes), Dave Polsky (same reason) and Cindy Morrow (she wrote my favorite episode ever: Read It and Weep)

I didn't vote M. A. Larson, because the season 3 finale disappointed me so much... -_-

Cindy Morrow is probably my favorite, Winter Wrap Up and Sisterhooves Social are two of my absolute favorite episodes, and she wrote a lot of other good ones too. I also really like M.A. Larson, Amy Keating Rogers, and a few others.

I voted for every single writer but Corey Powell, just because my hatred for her episodes outweigh my love for any of the others. Seriously, she couldn't characterize if the whole world depended on it.

Also, if a few stand out, it'd be Dave Polsky, Charlotte Fullerton, Merriwether Williams, and M.A. Larson :D

Meghan McCarthy has written most of the episodes in my top 10 so she is my favorite. MA Larson is very good too.

Third is a toss up between Polsky, Rogers, and Morrow. All of them have written great episodes but also they've had some duds. Polsky was great in season four and showed some growth as a writer, so I have to give him third in my rankings.

I almost gave Powell a vote ... mostly out of pity because she almost nailed a perfect episode ... almost.

Fullerton on the other hand (and I suppose you would appreciate this) knew how to take a trope ridden character mold and recreate it into the most dynamic and complex character on the show. Without Fullerton Rarity would not be Rarity. Depth!

Umm...Rarity is, and always has been, far from trope filled :D

From what I know, a trope is kind of like a stereotype - something that you expect to see in characters due to the numerous amount of times those traits are present.

Rarity manages to take her entire character arc as a good-looking pretty diva girl who's obsessed with fashion and turn all of the tropes of that character type, which are being mean, antagonistic, spoiled (she whines complains, yeahh, but not really enough to make her out as her stereotypical character arc) selfish, greedy, and stuck-up. If you were to pay attention to her, her flaws do get the better of her sometimes, but quite frankly, she's none of those things :D She's a very generous mare who manages to be beautiful on both the inside and the outside, and that is why her namesake is so fitting - she really is a Rarity :D

What's strange about Powell is she wrote one of my favorite episodes, Sleepless In Ponyville. But the others she's written have been pretty subpar and boring (although only Rainbow Falls I think is outright terrible. As far as duds go Williams has far more of those)

I've written NUMEROUS wall of texts explaining why I think that episode is no better than the others Powell has written - and Williams has a bad rep because of one episode that didn't set well with the fandom. She's probably my 3rd or 4th favorite writer on staff :D

I've seen people write entire thesis on why that episode is good, and how it explores areas the show had not yet done.

And my favorite writer has to be faust. She doesn't write on the show anymore, but the episodes that all got it started for me were in large part written by her, and she did set up the entire thing.

Here are my top five writers at the moment.

1. Meghan Mccarthy: Being one of two writers that has been on the entirety of the show since it's inception, she get's high marks for being more consistent and the fact her writing has remain in very good form. What I wish for Meghan to do is going back to writing one part episodes again because while I have enjoyed her two parter episodes for how ambitious in scope they are, I think she does better when she doesn't have to concern herself with so many things that she usually ties into her two parters.

2. Amy Keating Rogers: Returning to top form in season 4 after leaving in season 2 on  a rather mediocre episode, the season hiatus has definitely helped her out in sharpening her writing keen.

3. Dave Polsky: What an awesome turnaround it has been for him this season, going from one of the least liked writers to being not only season 4's best and favored.

4. MA Larson: He lost some points after taking a break for writing MLP in season 4, his last episode not being so good, and Amy and Dave's rise to the occasion has lowered his rankings. Though if he is able to get back to form, he could go back up.

5. Cindy Morrow: One of the writers I sincerely miss since her departure from season 3, though she did lost points for my favor after a rather mediocre season in season 3 after her otherwise brilliant streak of episodes in season 2.

Mare Do Well is bad (but overhated). Putting Your Hoof Down and Dragon Quest are really bad and Spike At Your Service is my least favorite episode on the show (although how much of that episode is her fault vs Polsky's, I'm not sure)

I will give her credit for The Wonderbolts Academy, that was pretty good

Also I'm curious why you don't like Sleepless In Ponyville (think you could link me to one of your posts?)

Dragon Quest, Bats! and Mare Do Well are three of my favorite episodes - Putting Your Hoof Down was ok, SAYS was pretty bad, and Wonderbolts Academy was good, but a bit overhyped :D

I agree, but without Look Before you Sleep and Suited For Success, her characterization could have VERY easily been your dime a dozen fashion obsessed diva.

Instead Fullerton (with equal help from Ingram and Tabitha St. Germaine) imbued the role with an amazing dichotomy that you rarely see in animation. Of course Faust deserved credit too, but the dialogue in the episodes I mentioned is Fullerton all the way!

If these had been the episodes I tested out back in 2011, I would have been here a hell of a lot sooner, that's for damn sure.

Interesting take on it. I disagree with some things you said, except maybe Rarity's characterization (although she was being forced to go on a camping trip, so treating Sweetie the way she did doesn't bother me too much. Powell may have gone a bit overboard, but it didn't really affect the episode for me)

Eh, I still maintain my opinion of it, but I think it's good you have opinions that go against the popular consensus. I have a very high opinion of season three and particularly the premier and finale episodes, which probably is not widely shared (or at least not by a majority). Anyway, cool stuff, cheers :D

Dave Polsky almost made it, but frankly this season he's been on less of a smooth upward trajectory and more of a total wild card. In no particular order:

Merriweather Williams - I was really happy to see her return and her one season 4 writing credit showed that she had just as much command over AJ's character as always as well as an excellent turn for Fluttershy. I feel like she gets the more pragmatic and hard-headed side of Equestria down very well, which... huh, that might be why she's such a good writer for Applejack...

Cindy Morrow - (WHY U NO IN SEASON 4) Good at the slice of life, which is best type of episode.

Amy Keating Rogers - Generally competent but I wasn't a big fan of her until her great Season 4 work. She now has the honor of writing my favorite episode in the series.

Charolette Fullerton - Sorry Dave Polsky, you're doing great this season but Charolette's still the Rarity master as far as I'm concerned. She's also just got nicely balanced slice of life, which, again, is something I enjoy. Wrote the best Season 1 episode (Suited for Success), yah.

Cindy Morrow - (WHY U NO IN SEASON 4)

Oh, I've never noticed that  she must return in the staff for the season 5, that would be awesome.

What's strange about Powell is she wrote one of my favorite episodes, Sleepless In Ponyville.

It is strange, I really wonder why her first episode was that great, and every other episode she made were far from being as good as this one. (I loved Rainbow Falls too but I know this episode isn't appreciated here)
