Notifications for Name Changes

I was just going back to the forums and was checking out how everyone was doing, however, I couldn't recognize a lot of people. Okay, these are the same people I've known, they just changed thier username Even I just changed it. It's just confusing and a bit of a hassle to figure out just who's changed thier name to what. I think we should have a feature where when one or more of the users on your friends list changes thier Display Name, that you should be notified so you won't have to take the pointless time of figuring it out. I actually completely confused a friend back from my original site today for whole nother guy. I think having a feature like this would be useful in avoiding that.

I agree with this one, as a good number of my friends make a game of changing their display names, and I'm endlessly confused as to whom I'm talking to.

But then, I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed. :)

I agree this would be very useful since my friends change their names a bit and it becomes rather difficult to remember who is who.... but then again the signature usually gives it away but regardless I'm still on board with this idea

Yes, this is a feature that I would like to see as well. In fact it was suggested several months ago as something that another member would like to see. Before that, it was brought up to the developer. It would require custom modification which at the time we didn't have the resources to invest in.

Will it find it's way on the forums in the future? As development here is always fluid, no guarantees can be made. That said, there is value in this request.

I don't know what you're talking about. :please:

I've always liked this suggestion, as I've seen it a few times.

though it'd kind of kill the game of constantly changing names lol

YES, so much yes, if it would at ALL be possible to include this in the notifications in the future than that would probably be the best small change ever made to the site, I have seen status updates countless times from people I don't even remember adding to my friends list simply because they have changed their name,in which case it would it would just be sort of nifty to get notified to the change. ^_^

Yes, of course, Civetri. What would you know about that, hm?

(I forward this suggestion, by the way. It could actually be handy for the staff as well, too.)

  • 2 weeks later...

I wonder if instead of a notification, it was built into the display of the username on threads and posts, but maybe only for your friends? Something like "DashBits (TaikoDragon)" where TaikoDragon is the former name.

Anyways, I would be all for notification of some kind cause I'm still not sure of my username and wouldn't want to confuse any friends I make.

Notifications would be easier, and we have done site wide theme days where a large portion of us change our display names, so a parenthetical display would kill that illusion. Also I'm currently wearing a display name based on a member picking it ... right after my last themed display name. I think the gentleman who won that chance to pick my name would me more appreciative if it did not say Buttons Mom <3 (Princess Luna)

Unless it was done as a 'mouse over'

Originally, my post was wondering why not just enable the display name history for everybody on the profile pages, but then I realized that it's actually already up for everyone, it's just too many people changing names too frequently! Adding a sort of "primary name" sort of field in the user pane would be a little improvement over just going to the profile and checking name history probably, depending on how far you go with it. It may complicate things too much though, having either inconsistencies in your posting name and your profile name or having some sort of custom 'identity' field.

I mean, you could just have a primary name that shows up on your profile and a posting name for all the little games, but I doubt those events are the primary concern. Showing notifications as they happen is a nice option since then you could just go through your unread (or read, when you forget) notifications and see who changed to what. It might be the only real solution even! Regardless one can just go to the profile and sift through all the previous names, I don't think there's something more convenient than notifications on friend name changes and showing the history on profiles.
