movies/tv It's depressing being a Star Wars fan these days

So my Mom got me one of these for christmas:

Even though I've explained to her that I don't support episode 7 and Disney canon she really doesn't understand the difference. Of course I accepted it gratefully and now I have to stick it in my collection.

I don't feel like wearing a Star Wars shirt any more because somebody will say "Star Wars fan! Hey, aren't you excited for episode 7???" NO!

People say "Give it a chance! It might be a GREAT movie!!!"

No, with Abrams in charge there is NO chance it will be a great movie. And no matter the quality as far as I'm concerned it won't BE a Star Wars movie because it's outside of the existing continuity. It'll be a Star Wars parody. At BEST we get Space Balls II.

So basically this is a thread to discuss the hopelessness of Episode 7, and how Star Wars fans are ungrateful they're finally getting a new movie. K.

I can understand the dislike for Disney's genocide of the canon, as well as the potential failure of episode VII. One can enjoy and dislike any aspect of any franchise they want, as once it gets large enough there are bound to be things people don't like within it.

But c'mon, the -spoilers- is gr8, even if he does potentially break the Rule of Two.

I did warn that it was a geek rant. Mainly it's about my depression every time I think about something I used to enjoy.

The rule of two isn't written in stone but I've stayed away from the show just because it's part of the new canon. I just know him from the commercials.

So you let the fact that the new movie isn't going to be what you want ruin your enjoyment for the original trilogy? I don't care if the new one is the worst movie of all time. I'm still going to pop those tapes in my VCR from time to time and watch me some goddamn Star Wars

Also be grateful. You know what my mom gets me for Christmas every year? Stuff I need. I got a toothbrush one year. It was a nice toothbrush but still just a toothbrush. I usually get underwear too. Never any comics, collectibles, video games, or PC parts. Try to be grateful that she's trying

Again, I'm not blaming my mom and I'm not ungrateful.

And it's not even about what I like and don't like. It's about disrespecting fans who have put time and money into something by replacing it with something else because it makes it easier on hack directors.

Also..tapes??? Time to upgrade.  ;)

I think it's a great time to be a Star Wars fan provided you aren't a big whiny baby.

JJ Abrams is very talented and he doesn't exist in an insulated bubble of yes-men like George Lucas did.

And as much as I enjoy the Expanded Universe, It's much better to have a fresh story where I might actually be surprised instead of just having Heir to the Empire the movie or Dark Empire the movie.

Hahaha yes tapes. I got the original trilogy at Salvation Army for 50¢ each. And I'm a sucker for analog. I love vintage tech like vhs :D

As much as I really hate the fact that once Disney took control that the expanded universe was tossed aside I am still in wait and see mode for how the Star Wars franchise is going to go. I have been watching Star Wars Rebels which is the show that character is from and so far it is not nearly as good as Clone Wars but still has some potential and it is too soon to tell if episode 7 is going to be any good but I will give it a shot. When Disney bought out Marvel I just about shit my pants but so far they are actually doing quite well with that, lots of great movies and some good cartoons for the most part they are letting Marvel do their thing. Tossing the expanded universe aside is a profound form of meddling that cannot be ignored but with that what are they going to do from here?

I'm sorry, but all I hear is "Weh weh, I don't like my gift. People don't understand meeee."

Seriously, I think there are bigger problems out there, and we don't need another "Star Wars is going to suck now because Disney and 2015 and change is bad." thread.

So assuming Star Wars 7 turns out to be a critically acclaimed movie where the general consensus says it's amazing, it'll still be terrible by default because JJ Abrams is directing it?

Okay then. Apparently open-mindedness is overrated.

I was thinking about it,and  George Lucas didn't give a shit about the Expanded Universe and didn't follow it at all. For the prequel movies and for Clone Wars he happily contradicted EU stuff and the EU writers would have to bend over backwards to retcon things so they didn't contradict.

So I guess at least JJ Abrams and Disney are open and up front about it.

I am not expecting the movies and cartoons to follow this stuff perfectly but to just toss it out really seems to disrespect the great work that has gone on there. But I will agree that less involvement from George Lucas is one positive change, he may have created Star Wars but the guy was completely and totally unwilling to listen to listen to his fans or anyone else and really became full of himself. If there is one piece of advise I can give to Abrams and Disney is to actually listen to the fans, sure you can't please everyone all the time but make some effort at least. But it is like I said, I am still in wait and see mode. Disney has proven they can handle Marvel now I am waiting to let them prove the same for Star Wars.
